When you visit the Edison YMCA, please don't judge the facility by the front desk staff who scan your card. I've been a regular member at the Edison YMCA for the past 15 years. The classes and instructors here are truly some of the finest in the industry. A special shoutout to Sandy, Ruth, Reena, and Payal for world-class Yoga classes; Sakshi, Aanchal, Hollia, and Srividya for Zumba; and EJ, Marilyn, and Angela for Pilates and Total Body. Full credit also goes to Christine, who is a great leader and manages a wonderful team overall. The only downside is the front desk; they lack warmth and look unhappy to see a member walk in. If you're a swimmer don't come here. Don't do it. I have been swimming with one of my friends at this YMCA for over a year. The AD knew and it seemed alright. The moment I moved and had to find a new Y I still made time to meet up with my friend to swim and work on her basics. I would swim laps, she'd work on her freestyle. Today management or someone who didn't tell me her name stormed in and told me to leave because I was "selling" lessons. ?????? This never happened. When I told her I was with my friend, she asked my friend if that was the case and she said yes, family friend. This made this manager (?) really angry and she claimed I didn't have a membership even though there's a national membership program. She tried to tell my friend she didn't have a membership and she has one too. This enraged her and she threatened to call security on me after she didn't get the answers that she wanted. Mind you, it was addressed over a year ago with the AD that I would come ON MY OWN TIME to work with my friend. She claimed I was "fighting" but I was seriously confused by this exchange and the threat of security when I didn't do anything was crazy! I don't feel comfortable going to this establishment ever again and I will not promote it either. How disheartening. Swimmers beware. read more

Terrible service, I made an attempt to go to this establishment to play basketball. I even called before i came in because i knew that it was a Saturday. When i get there im getting dirty looks before i even walk into the building by staff and people that were going for the same reason as me. When i walk in, im being yelled at by the front desk later "NO BASKETBALL"that the hoops are not open due to an "event" but when i called she told me the basketball gym was open and i could come in and pay to play. This was either miscommunication or for some reason they didn't want us there. Either way i was treated as if my money was not good like everybody elses. read more

Nicely located right on oak tree road. Good parking facilities. They run free gyms for 7th graders which is very useful . Kids can sign up and play various things like basket ball , ping pings , pool etc. I haven't heard of any other gym franchisee doing this . Kudos to the team ... gym looks good . I've been a member for about a year now, and I'm pretty happy with my experience so far. I use the Y as my regular gym and it has everything I need for a really great price. There are group classes throughout the day, where everyone is very friendly. The cardio room has a lot of machines. It does get busy during peak hours but you'll still be able to get on several machines. The weight room also has a lot of free weights, kettlebells, excercise balls, barbells. Basically everything you want. I've been pleased with the availability of equipment. There is a pool available, but it tends to get very busy unless you go very early in the morning. Overally, I get more for my money here than I do anywhere else close by. read more

Very rude service, went up to the staff to sign in with my friend. Then my friend goes into put his cards in case 1 didn't work, but both cards magically didn't work even though his mom used the car the other day. Then I put my card and she just said "uhh I will call security go now". Like my card works and she forced both of us to go out even with my active card. We came because one of our friends invited us to play badminton there, and that one friend who was already signed in for 10 minutes and was watching us sign in by the side was also told to sign in and when he went to get his card, he was told no don't go, get your card, even though it was on the table. I come here from South Brunswick 3-4 times in a week. This place is cleans and the staff is very nice and courteous. They keep the place welcoming and safe for all. I normally play badminton and visit cardio center and gym area. Total worth for the money spent, nice place dor whole family workout. They have clean swimming pool too. read more

The only reason why I'm a member at the Y is because of it's location since I moved to NJ, otherwise, I don't think I would be a member here. I have few problems with this place and I actually hope the manager of this place would take my comments as feedback to improve their services (especially since I heard they are going to increase our fees!). And for all those users/members, please read this and help improve the experience for others! Check In - Like every gym, you need to swipe your card to go in. But what I don't understand is why you need to swipe your card again when you go to the weight room? Weight room - this is a lot smaller than what I am used to. They recently upgraded their treadmills and elliptical machines (YES!!!). However, their weights are very old... they need to be replaced ASAP. They have a small stretch area but since this place is very small, sometimes it's odd to do certain stretch (you know when you need to bend down and your ass if exposed and everyone takes a glance at your booty?) I know this is not YMCA's fault, but people who go to this gym need to use deodorant... there's always BO lingering here and there. Pool - Wow, I've never seen so many people use the pool all at once! I guess there's a urge to learn how to swim (props to everyone who is doing it.. it's very important to learn how to swim). However, my problem is that there are lots of kids and I'm always seeing mucus floating on the water... which is why I never wanted to swim anymore ...EW! Gym Class - there are only two rooms at this Y location hence the large crowd for specific classes like Yoga, Zumba, Cycling, fitness. I have taken different classes and I have to say that I like the instructors! They are my only motivation why I keep going to take classes and stay away from the weight room. I really find it annoying since they don't have a limit of how many people can take a class, there's a large crowd.. for example there's like 40 people in 1 class.. HOW DO YOU FOLLOW? I think the Y needs to monitor at the door or have a registration sheet. Here's another tip for the users, if you can't follow the instructor, please stay in the back and don't block the others.. especially when the instructor tells you to go left and you go right! Staff - Often I see them advertising special classes like DANCE. I've asked twice and in both occasions when I asked how much it cost, the staff can't answer this! They don't even bother to find out.. they tell me that "they always post stuff and don't tell us.. sorry we don't know" is quite unacceptable. But they still ask me to register for the class because they have the registration sheet. Daycare - This is probably the best thing at the Y. This is great for busy parents who don't have anyone to help them watch their kids, bring them here. They have a small play area.. it could be a bit more sanitary but it's something. Court - My husband goes there early on the weekends to shoot hoops. There are few evenings that the Y arranges friendly games for volleyball, basketball, badminton, racquet ball, etc.. read more

1)If you are a Swim lover or if you want to learn swimming .DO NOT JOIN HERE. It is not clean and they won't maintain properly and if you joining kids you will be putting them in health issues ...water not all clean. 2)for swimming,we need to go their timings not member timings. For example,you won't get free swimming in weekdays.yaaaa you get it in hard timings..8.30PM to 9.30PM. And in weekends forget about it. So think twice before join here. The Smelliest Gym I have ever been to. I have never thought humans can smell so bad, they should make some shower before going there. The Dirtiest Pool I have ever stepped foot into. I was afraid to catch something. This place needs new management, I drive to the Metuchen or Fanwood, even though Edison is right down the street. read more

I became a member here after becoming a refugee from the city. It's not bad, but it's certainly not the kind of gym I'm used to. As you'd expect for a suburban Y, it's very family oriented. That has several implications: The pool is pretty shallow, no deep end. It's closed for a lot of the day, because it isn't staffed, and because it's the locale for swim practice in the afternoons. And it has limited hours on weekends. (7a-6p on Saturdays, 830a-6p on Sundays). It has a fair number of machines -- about a dozen -- but I'm not a big user of them. There are only two upright stationary bikes, but I've never had to wait. There's a little more than a dozen treadmills, but I haven't had to wait for them either. But they're slow -- many of them don't go above 9 mph! The free weight area isn't huge, but seems sufficient. (I'm not a big user of them either.) The users are mostly high school kids and a handful of middle-aged suburban guys. It's pretty under control. There's a cafeteria, but it seems to be open only in the morning. I haven't participated in the group exercise classes, but they seem a little limited. As befits the clientele, most are oriented towards the middle-aged or the school-aged -- not the young adult demographic I'm used to in the city. There's a small rock wall, but it doesn't look like it's used often -- or that we have access to it. My big issue is that there's hardly any stretching area. All in all, not bad -- pretty much what you'd expect for Edison. But given a choice, I'd much rather have my gym in the city! read more
