I got an appointment for my eyes check up since I didn't check my eyes for years. Dr. Oscar Leis is very nice and patiently listened to my concerns. He also gave me a suggestion how I can remain my eyes sight. Because , my eyes has condition so he put me on a deeper test not just a regular check up to make sure everything is all right which I don't mind. Every staff member are also friendly and welcoming. The clinic is a bit hard to find and it in the basement of the building that make more like a secret place. If I have a problem in the future I will come visit Dr. Leis again. read more

This is, by far, the best experience I have ever had at an eye doctor in 20+ years of wearing glasses. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment and was immediately shown back to see the doctor. Dr. Oscar Leis was incredibly knowledgeable and spent a lot of time explaining each aspect of the process to me and answering all my questions. The staff working with the glasses and frames were incredible - kind, helpful, and with a lot of experience. I got two gorgeous pairs of frames from their small, but well-curated selection. The front desk staff is responsive and so nice! Every time I call, they answer promptly and help in whatever way they can. When I needed an itemized receipt for insurance, they emailed in 30 seconds. The receptionist were absolutely delightful and efficient, easily orchestrating the traffic between patients waiting to be seen and those waiting to pay, schedule upcoming appointments, and/or pickup glasses/contacts. I really tried to like Dr. Nevins and his office. I was referred here by my trusted retina specialist, probably bc he is in the same building. Admittedly, I have complicated vision and see several eye doctors for different issues. So I came to Dr Nevins for an eyeglass prescription only, as recommended. He ended up being arrogant, unprofessional and ineffective. Initially he told me he would help me figure this out, not to worry. He also told me this was not a science, which I had no idea what he meant. Isn't eye care science? Fast forward 6 months later, 3 visits, several phone calls, emails, 8 different (incorrect) prescriptions and 4 incorrect new frames, I still did not have the correct prescription from him. When I did not understand the changes on the last rx, which was not discussed during my visit, he refused to help me figure it out, saying that he had spent an hour looking at my record and I would have to schedule a 4th appointment to go over it with him. (of course, at my expense) I questioned him on why he thought I would trust him again and told him would go to another dr., he told me there is no better optometrist than him in NYC. I had to go to a different doctor to get the correct prescription. In the process, I made 4 frames based on Nevins' prescriptions. A lot of money wasted. During my visits, he did extensive ophthalmological testing, I only came in for a vision test. I have 3 medical eye doctors that do tons of tests. He is not an ophthalmologist. Evidently a wannabe so that he can bill for these additional tests. I only requested and needed a vision test. Logistically his office is a mess. It is crammed full of equipment with no room for social distancing. Workers and patients are falling all over each other, bc there is not enough space. Definitely not handicap accessible. Weirdly, the bathroom/storage closet opens to the center of the office, dispensary and hall leading to the tiny testing equipment area and exam rooms. I feel sorry for the staff, maybe they have their own bathroom. But maybe not. Approach this office at your own risk. If you have simple vision and do not have an ophthalmologist, it's possible it could work for you. IMO there are MANY great optometrists and dispensaries to choose from in NYC. THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAD BY FAR! Lack basic decency and honesty. I was charged TRIPLE!!! the amount they said I would for something I didn't want in the first place. Their billing department said it's not their job to tell me how much something will cost. Also, their glasses frames are either very limited or extremely expensive. Mine came uneven on one side and I feel are overall low quality. The doctor was nice but was part of the deception as well telling me how he won't do anything that will be charged extra. Not worth the overall experience at this dishonest place. It is unfortunate this is how they run their business. Dr Goldstein is fantastic. However, I was charged an arm and a leg for progressive lenses (ok, they are expensive) and even after a re-do, the glasses didn't work for me. I took them elsewhere and right away, I was told my progressive lens situation is wrong. Such a disappointment to have spent 400$ on glasses that are barely useful. I'm going to first start with saying that I'm really sad about leaving Metropolitan Vision because Dr. Leis is wonderful. He's extremely patient and thorough and most importantly, he gives you the choice as the patient to be in charge of your health. However, the front desk staff and general practices of this office is a lesson in being informed about the healthcare system and understanding your benefits. (This seems like a given, but I took this for granted for many years, and I know that there are plenty of young adults who may also be sleeping on this.) I switched jobs in the last year so I now have my vision, dental, and medical insurance all under the same payer. For some reason, this office did not understand that and kept insisting that I did not have vision insurance and would need to pay co-pays for exams that are only covered by vision. I provided my insurance card and the information packet from my company that spells out that everything should be covered 100% (i.e., eye exam, prescriptions, and contact lens fittings). However, the office staff kept insisting that that was not vision insurance. She was extremely patronizing during this entire conversation and kept using vague terminology. I got on the phone w/ my insurance company at that moment and asked the insurance rep about the coverage status of each test/procedure/exam the office staff had said was not covered. As I listed out that each item was covered, the office staff would say, "Ok, but xyz isn't." At best, this office is too lazy and overworked to actually figure out your insurance. At worst, these people are totally ripping you off. After reading the other reviews for this place, I'm thinking it's the latter, as a lot of people are getting charged double co-pays or for other services they haven't even asked for. I had previously had not the best experience with zocdoc (zocdoc itself, not providers), so I was a little worried about booking with zocdoc and called the office to verify they took my insurance, who I would be seeing etc. The front desk was super nice and answered all my questions. they also called the day before to confirm my appointment - something I always appreciate. I got to the office and checked in. They took my temperature, and were very clear about the fees up front. What would be covered, which tests would be done, etc. and how much would be owed. They immediately took me back to do my eye photos. The optical tech who did the basic photos was so nice and friendly. A short wait to see Dr. Leis. Dr. Leis, was so nice and professional. Excellent bedside manner. Did my eye exam. took the time to discuss everything - definitely did not feel like a revolving door or being rushed. Explained everything to me as he was doing it (drops, etc, so I wasn't surprised), explained everything to me, and answered any and all questions I had. I will definitely be scheduling any check ups with him again (I think it's every two? years), as well as sending my husband. read more

Sabrina is exactly who you want when you're in a tough spot. I've been a client for a few years and have always enjoyed good service from the doctors and staff. But in late December and early January Sabrina really saved me. My glasses broke shortly before I was to leave for an extended stay out of the country. Despite the holiday delays she was able to get my replacement glasses in record time and I got on the plane much relieved. Really sad to post a negative review for this place because I had a very positive experience with Dr. Jung and the checkup went well. However, please don't be fooled by all of the glowing reviews on here and take a look at the negative ones, which mostly have two complaints in common: shady business practices and overly inflated prices. Also take a look at the reviews for the downtown office which are consistently mediocre for the same reasons as well. I'm really disappointed because I have vision insurance...but I was charged $130 for what I thought was supposed to be a routine eye exam. Apparently, since I specifically mentioned that I was interested in orthoK contacts, it was okay to tack on services that I didn't know about or consent to paying for? I also got quoted for $2400 for orthoK contacts, which at my previous doctor were only $1500 for the first year and $600 afterwards. If you don't believe me, just search for estimates for orthoK and you'll see most websites saying $600-2000. Maybe other yelp reviewers are okay with overpaying for good service and I usually am as well, but I think the lack of transparency surrounding the cost of this initial consultation was so disappointing that I wouldn't feel comfortable giving any more money to this business. Always ask before you receive any medical procedure how much it will cost --and pray that they're not being deceptive :( Hope you learn from my mistakes! read more

TLDR: great doctor, not so capable staff. Had to wait more than 40 MINUTES for my SCHEDULED appointment. Told the staff I'd been waiting for more than 20 minutes and she didn't seem too concerned. There was literally a woman crying (in actual tears) about how she had been a patient for years and was having an emergency and it took hours for them to see her. I was shown into the exam room and I guess the doctor went to see her first because I was left sitting there.... maybe I just have the worst luck because the other doctor had seen three patients during the time I was waiting ..? Doctor was really nice when I actually got to see him. Took his time to answer all my questions, suggest different options, etc. Now this is the part where it gets even weirder. I had two eye drops sent to my pharmacy. My appointment was 9am in the morning, when I go to pick it up at the pharmacy ~3pm nothing had been sent over. Call the office, they say they'll send it, go back to pharmacy, nothing there, call the office again - this happened THREE TIMES. Had contacts to pick up and my birthday was wrong. Needed prescription and it took another two days. JoAnn and another girl were helpful and genuinely seemed to care/want to help. Bruce always had an attitude for no reason? Overall, just seems practice is too busy to accommodate same day requests. read more

The doctor was pleasant and helpful, thought he gave a decent exam but the practice itself from the front desk staff to the overly cramped space was beyond impersonal and seemed all about volume and money. Just dismissive staff who told me different amounts that i was supposed to pay (shady) and couldn't raise a smile. The place is so small and overly packed that many of the eye tests are done in a back area waiting room in front of everyone waiting. I called for an annual eye exam appointment at this practice which I see has a lot of five star reviews on Google and here, but that doesn't always tell the full story. I said I have eye insurance which fully covers an annual eye exam, and the person then asked me for my medical insurance info. I said why do you need that? I've never had to give that to any previous eye doctor I've been to. She said well we're a medically based practice and bill your medical insurance. I said any other optometrist I've been to in the past has never asked for that and an eye exam has always been covered. She said well we bill health insurance for any medical tests and there "shouldn't" be a deductible. I told her the whole thing made me uncomfortable and I decided not to go through with this. After reading the numerous one star reviews saying they've been billed through their health insurance, I feel like I dodged a bullet. Extremely shady practices!! I'll continue searching for an optometrist that doesn't ask for health insurance. read more

There isn't much I can add that others haven't already. I've seen both Dr. Nevins and Dr. Leis and I adore both of them. You won't feel rushed, super attentive and open minded to seeing what works for your vision and what you're comfortable. Doctors such as these are hard to find in this massive city. I'm glad/thankful they exist and that I found them! Those who assist the doctors in the back are super pleasant and personable. Does the space leave something to be desired? Yes. Does the front desk not seem all that happy to be there or care whether or not you're there? Yes. I personally dread giving them a phone call to get any info/follow up I may need. 4 out of 5 times, it's dismissive, they seem to be rushing, maybe they're overworked but it's typically a not-so-delightful experience. read more

My seven year old daughter had an infection in her eyes. This experience was nerve-wrecking for me as a parent and I wanted to be sure she not only had a great doctor but also one that was good with kids and put her at ease. Dr. Jung is among the few doctors that I have come across that really cares about the well being of his patients and eye care. He takes his time to discuss what the annual check up is about why it is important and goes through the total health of your eyes. Most eye doctors in my past typically give you a script for either glasses or contacts and sell you on product. I personally welcome the thorough check that Dr. Jung gives. Well worth the time, I highly recommend him. For all the reviewers that complain about co-pay, learn about you insurance coverage before yapping. Dr. Nevins has been my doctor for an annual eye exam since the mid-90s when I moved to NYC, and continues to be my doctor after I moved to Florida in 2002. The exams are thorough and not rushed, and the various imaging capabilities are remarkable. Dr. Nevins reviews with me the results of all the tests and the trends in my eye health over time. COVID protocols are treated seriously by the office staff, but are not burdensome. The cost of an office visit is more than reasonable, especially given all the imaging and time spent with the doctor. Dr. Nevins is a skilled and personable doctor who has always shown care for my health, and that is why I make the trip from Florida each year for my exam. read more

It pains me, but I have to drop down my rating for this office. It's unfortunate because the doctor is great. But the office's money gauging ways really take away from the experience. Positives: - Great doctors who will make sure you have the right prescription, even if you have to retest - Convenient office hours with late appointments available several times a week (until 7pm or even a bit later) - Decent eyeglass selection Negatives: - They bill both your VSP (or other vision insurance) and your medical insurance for each appointment, even if you're just getting a regular annual check-up and haven't had any issues or changes in vision. And they don't tell you anything up front, so you have no option to decline. Then you end up being surprised when you're leaving the appointment and then again when they mail you an additional bill. This means you will be paying the VSP co-pay, the medical specialist co-pay and whatever else they deem not included (refraction or contact lens fitting). In many cases, this can add up to $75-100, which is not a pleasant experience considering you're already paying for your insurance premiums on both accounts and aren't coming in because you have any medical eye problems. I recently paid $75 in the office and then received another bill for $145. After calling and complaining, they waived the fees for one of the tests I didn't ask for ($105!), but I still ended up paying an additional $35. And this is all after they've gotten paid by both VSP and my medical insurance for the amounts that were covered. They billed my medical insurance alone $850 when I haven't had any changes in my vision or prescription in 5 years. - The woman who orders your glasses is not super knowledgeable. I've had much better experiences elsewhere. I had to get my glasses redone here once. p.s. Buy your contacts online. Even the 1-800-Contacts price they match is higher than what you can get elsewhere. In fact, 1-800-Contacts will match any other website's price + 2%. Total crooks. I went here for a second opinion several years ago. I asked them if my insurance would cover the standard eye exam. They replied in the affirmative. After the exam they charged me an additional $100 and threatened me on the spot with legal action if I did not pay immediately. The lenses that Dr. Jung prescribed for me gave me migraine headaches. I went back to my original doctor. The last straw was that the harridan in the billing office tried to charge my insurance company over $100 for a trial pair of disposable lenses--lenses that are free to optometrists and always free to patients. I cannot believe they are still in business. I am writing this review now because SEVEN years later they are still sending my tacky postcards asking for my business back. My doc was ok but they billed both my medical and vision insurance for simple eye exam. I was there to just check my vision. My co-pay for vision was $20 and co-pay for medical specialist was $40. The doc was not even MD. He was just OD but they charged me for specialist co-pay. so i had to pay $60 just in co-pay and they scammed my medical insurance a bill of more than $300+. I don't give out one star's lightly. But this place deserves it. The optometrist I dealt with was fine for the most part, seemed knowledgeable could answer questions etc. Only fault I could call out would be an absence of personality, and making you wait long after your scheduled appt time. I don't understand why you set a time and then don't see someone until 30-45 minutes after. But I guess I've experience that at other optometrists so maybe that's just their MO. The front office staff on the other hand are categorically awful. They always seem to be harried and extremely short with me. I'm not a sensitive person and, in fact, I rather respect directness in people. But christ you need a Kitchen Nightmares style intervention here. As other people have pointed out, they seem to be extracting the most money possible out of you. I have vision insurance and medical through my employer. I checked VSOP's website and they are a preferred provider, which should cover an annual check up and contacts/frames etc. In spite of that, they still billed my medical (BCBS) for each visit. Even more frustrating is that I go for my check ups in the beginning of the year, so I'm paying out of pocket each time to cover my deductible. On top of that when I went to order contacts through them the price they initially quoted was crazy expensive. After I balked they reversed and said they could match 1-800 contact's price. That's nice you do that, but why not just offer that upfront? I'd expect that behavior from a used car salesman, not from a healthcare provider. Final note, I've been trying to get them to email me a receipt for my last bill and after calling twice they still haven't done so. I know they have my email address on file because I gave it to them and they've sent me emails in the past. So I have no idea what the hold up is. The best part is if you try to call them when they're busy, they'll play this awesome game where they put you on hold, a new person picks up only to put you on hold again, and they repeat this process until you've lost all grip on reality. Please, do not be like me and choose an optometrist based on geographic convenience, go some place that gives a sh*t. There are plenty of other great options in the city. The staff has been lovely as well, and I look forward to my visits. I've only had one unpleasant experience: The door gets a bit stuck when it snows, so I called to say I couldn't get it to open. The woman at the desk that day proceeded to snipe at me while I stood in the cold rather than simply open the door. Went to Metropolitan after reading the reviews on Yelp and triangulating an ophthalmologist between my favorite bar, office, and apartment that accepted my insurance. Dr. Arthur Jung was great: attentive, polite, and, above all else, apologetic. After waiting 45 minutes in the front reception room, I was taken to a hidden corral where I waited an additional 20 minutes before I was seen. Dr. Jung, when I finally saw him, was great. A little slower than I've had in the past. How slow? Between the waiting and my exam, I was in the office for three hours. Three hours! I'm debating if I would ever return for a second exam. On a side note, I've decided that I am no longer going to appear for a doctor's appointment for my scheduled time. I'll probably roll in 45-60 minutes later. Are any doctors on time?! To finalize my rant, I feel that I should explain the strangest part. Most of your tests, except for your eye exam, will be performed in the corral in front of 5 - 6 people. Made for a slightly awkward experience as my knee grazed the man sitting next to me as I had my cornea examined. read more
