I have gone to the E 40th location for 3 years now. I'm done. Office is small and cramped. Lots of congestion. At last visit, had me move around to 7 different locations. Just for an eye exam!!! Equipment broke down during lst visit. Had to return for a 2nd visit to get refraction test. The technology for this test was down. Techs are rushed and unfriendly. Office and docs are misinformed on what insurance covers what tests. I was erroneously billed for the refraction test. It has taken weeks for front desk to resolve. They don't get back to me when I reach out. When I AM able to speak to them, all I get is diatribes and requests for me to actually come into the office to get a simple refund processed. This is so unprofessional and totally unacceptable. read more

1 star. Would give zero if I could. Worth noting: Zocdoc doesn't allow reviews unless you book through their system, and Healthgrades rejected my comment for being "too negative." I now realize how misleading these glowing reviews can be. Came here only because it's close to my office--huge mistake. After finishing all new patient paperwork promptly, I waited over 25 minutes with zero communication. No one checked in. I had to step out and ask. The nurse, visibly irritated, kept repeating "no problem" as if my time didn't matter. When I asked if I could expect to be seen soon, she said, "hard to say." Dr. Blackman eventually appeared just long enough to say--curtly--that she was with another patient and would be with me "soon." No apology, no explanation, just attitude. Dr. Tan is the best! Very professional and made me feel very comfortable! The office is clean and the wait is non-existent! Front desk is friendly as well! I came here for my annual eye exam, I had been getting headaches from my previous eye subscription, my contacts were an incorrect prescription. Dr. Tan explained everything in a concise and clear manner. I felt comfortable asking questions and she explained each step of the eye exam process. I came to Dr. Shepps after having struggled with dry eye and corneal ulcers for years. i was so frustrated as I was in so much pain and nothing seemed to help. I was told to go to him and even though I live on Long Island, I did. it was the best advice and decision I could have made. he is wonderful and all his staff and colleagues that work with him are fantastic. they treat me with such care and are so pleasant and helpful. I would recommend them to anyone with eye issues. they are the best. Stay away! Went to the downtown location for a regular checkup and was disgusted with the price gauging and the "factory" atmosphere. It was very crowded and at first I was pleased that my wait wasn't too long when they called me in. Then I experienced the reason for that: I have never been to any medical appointment that felt so rushed. I was informed all sorts of things about my eyes / prescription so quickly (and without real discussion) that my head was spinning. I was even pressed to have a procedure on the spot. I was shocked because I didn't fully process any of the things they had previously said yet! When I checked out , I was informed that I had to pay triple the co- pay because they charge separately for anything the Doctor or technician does (even eye drops). I will say that the Doctor himself had a pleasant demeanor and seemed intelligent. Unfortunately, it seems this office is more concerned with making a profit than with actual patient care. read more

I went in for a simple eye exam but instead I was told that I needed several other procedures ($)... when I refused I was told that my prescription would not be given to me (which was why I went there in the first place) unless I take at least some other service. All along I was treated like I was talking loudly at a movie theater. Everyone was unfriendly (they actually seemed angry). The experience left me wanting to run out of this place holding my wallet. And I still had to pay for services which I didn't even need. I used to like this office. Maybe I should have insisted on seeing Dr Shepps... But never ever again will I go there. read more

I came to this office for an eye exam a month ago and don't plan on returning. The reception staff was friendly and helpful but the exam itself was disappointing. I had inquired about getting laser eye surgery and after a quick check from the doctor he said yes I was a candidate and if I was interested to make an appointment with the receptionist. I have since gone to another surgeon for more comprehensive testing for laser eye surgery candidacy. I started in one room and put my purse down by the exam chair and was taken to another room. Once my eyes had been dilated I went to retrieve my purse from the original room to find another patient in there. I was then told to take my purse with me while I waited for my pupils to dilate. I would give zero if I could. I had an appointment in November 2020 with Gerald Shepps MD. Upon arrival, they tried to scam me into paying for a $500 glaucoma exam. I immediately said no. I went just for a routine wellness eye exam that is meant to be covered by my insurance, I don't need your extra add-ons! During my routine eye exam, I mentioned to the doctor that I have eye floaters. I've been wearing contacts and glasses for over 20 years, I know my eyes very well. I know that the floaters are of no reason for concern and they come with age. I'm not a dummy! The doctor then proceeded to charge me for diagnosing me with eye floaters. Over a year later, I am still receiving bills for $317.74 for his "diagnosis". I would stay far away if you're looking for a place just to get an updated prescription for contacts/glasses. They will find a way to charge you for anything. Even for telling them something about your eyes that you already were very well aware of. read more

The office staff are really friendly and helpful and the wait is never too long -- they are usually pretty busy but I've never waited longer than 15 minutes to be seen. Dr. Shepps is a great doctor -- he's very funny and cool and definitely puts you at ease. I'm normally super anxious at the doctor (doesn't matter what kind of doctor, medical settings in general make me nervous!) but he put me at ease and really knows his stuff. I really recommend this place -- I've only gone to the east side location so I can't speak to the downtown office, but the staff and Dr. Shepps are truly wonderful. read more

My positive experience with Dr. Shepps and the folks at Associate Opthalmologists moved me to write this review, my first on yelp. After having what turned out to be a conjunctival cyst on my eye for 2+ years I decided to have something done about the unsightly red bump on my eye. After several consultations with various docs in his practice I met with Dr. Shepps and scheduled a date for the surgery. Though I had to wait several months for an opening at Mass Eye & Ear to open up, I fault my insurance, who backs surgeries there and nowhere else. When the day finally came--and in the few months leading up to it--I can't deny that I was a little anxious. Nobody likes hospitals, me included, but Dr. Shepps ended up doing an excellent job and proved that I had no reason to worry. The operation was far less torturous than I expected and was done in less than 1/2 an hour. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Shepps and his staff to anyone whose eyes need a little--or a lot--of love. read more

While, I typically visit the downtown office, I recently had LASIK performed by Dr. Rudick. The experience was incredible. From the initial consultation, to the pre-op and then the actual surgery and multiple post-ops visits, he took time to answer all of my questions and make me feel comfortable. The surgery was painless, recovery minimal and one day later I had 20/20 vision!! Additionally, the LASIK coordinator, Carmen, is a absolute delight. Dr. Wallis is a great doctor! He's very careful in his examination, taking the time to get it right. He listens to my concerns and answers my questions thoroughly. I have high eye pressure and a family history of glaucoma, so he is building a history on me and I trust he is monitoring it closely and will prescribe at the appropriate time. His office has updated technology - if you're into that. He's fun to talk to and really easy to have casual talk with during the appointment. Honestly - Dr. Wallis is just cool. He's efficient and always gives me enough time for a complete examination, but also leaving me enough time to get off to work. The staff there is also great. Couldn't recommend him enough! I came to this office back in Sept 2016 and had a great experience with Dr. Talbi as I was having issues with my current contacts. Since it was an emergency they were able to get me in pretty quickly. She was very patient with me and answered all my questions and setup time for me to meet with Dr. Rudick for a Lasik consultation since I had been thinking about it for quite some time. I did my fair share of shopping around for lasik and I am so happy that I came back and went with Dr. Rudick! He attends both downtown and midtown offices which made it easier with my schedule. And he answered all my questions no matter how silly some of them were. Carmen the coordinator for the lasik was extremely helpful with all my financial questions and scheduling my appointments. I was really nervous for the surgery but Dr. Rudick and his staff were extremely comforting throughout it all! I second that! I used to hate going for annual checkups like people hate going to the dentist...but worse! One of my coworkers recommended the Midtown office to me 5 years ago, and I will always be thankful for it (I prefer the Downtown location). With the exception of two (older) renowned specialist that saw me when I was 12 y/o, Dr. Wallis was the only one who really tried to understand my vision problems and help--he not only recommended me to a specialist who did help but also followed up! I was in luck to be in an eyeglass store and was speaking to a salesperson, who in fact was completing his degree in ophthalmology. He told me that I did not need a new pair of glasses. I, in fact I had cataracts. He recommended Associate Ophthalmologists. I made an appointment for the following week. Dr. Shepps is one the finest doctors I have ever met. He did one eye at a time, and has a wonderful set up for his operating room. Dr. Shepps and his associates are serious and low key. I was flattered when he sometimes asked me to speak to people who were going to have Cataract operations. I probably went for checkups over a period of two or three years. The people in the office are as low key as Dr. Shepps is. I never came without being recognized and welcomed by his receptionists, nurses and associate surgeons.. In fact, when I came upon a Yelp revue recently. I was reminded that I must go for an eye checkup. As usual, I look forward to seeing them all. Don't let the fact that the waiting room is packed. I love Dr. Wolfe. After being diagnosed with dry eyes, within two seconds of looking at my eyes, she knew I had cornea infections. She saw me for several weeks, and explained each week why she was making the decisions that she was making - we had to change solutions, type of contact, etc to identify what could be wrong with my eyes. These guys were the only ones who could see me as an emergency that morning. As someone who has worked in the vision-care industry -- and seen way too many optometrists and ophthalmologists who are basically just highly educated retailers -- I appreciate that the folks at Associate Ophthalmologists never try to sell you anything. They're real medical professionals. Dr. Wallis is caring, upbeat, and dedicated. He adjusted my prescription in such a way that I don't have to wear reading glasses. I haven't had an eye exam in ages! Once I got my insurance, it was hard to find an actual opthalmologist that accepted my just plain vision insurance. I found Dr. Rudick on Zoc Doc. I visited the E.40th location which is right near the UN. Accessible by the 6 train some blocks away. The office itself is very sleek, pretty, modern and clean. The receptionists are friendly and helpful. I waited about 5 minutes to be seen so that was amazing! All of the equipment is new and sparkly clean so you don't feel at all hesitant to rest your chin and eyes on the machines that do the testing. The office is run like a well oiled machine. I never seen anyone having to wait. Once you come in, within a few minutes, you are given your tests and put in the room for the doctor. Dr. Rudick came in and was very quick, pleasant and efficient. Did the rest of the vision exam and then diagnosed me with blepharitis, which I pretty much knew I had. Just didn't know I had such an extreme case. Asked me if I had time to get my eyes dilated and after a ten minute wait, I was done. I wish he talked to me a bit more about my visit and condition. I know he had other patients waiting and I know how doctors offices run since I work for one, but I so miss the days when you get individual attention and care. Since I only have vision insurance and my blepharitis is considered a "medical problem" my vision didn't cover it and I don't have medical so they charged me $100. They waived my vision co-pay because of that which was nice. $100 for a new patient really isn't bad, but just to look at my eyes for a minute and tell me what I already knew I had, it was a bit steep. I would recommend Associate Opthalmologists though because it is a very calming environment. Just make sure you have medical insurance! read more

I didn't have long to wait in Reception and Olga was very friendly. Next, Simon took me through many tests and was very patient and helpful. I then saw Dr Ruddick, who introduced something amazing to me - eye plugs for dry eyes! It took 2 seconds, was completely painless and my eyes haven't been dry since! Unfortunately, we found out that I had cataracts and should have surgery. Needless to say, I was very nervous about this, but after another appointment, this time with Dr Shepps, I felt less anxious after speaking with him. Again, Simon took me for some tests and was very nice and helpful. Then Dr Fung saw me and she was amazing - so knowledgeable and put me right at ease. When Dr Shepps came in, I was less nervous and we chatted about the surgery. I will be going in May for these 2 ops, and am not as terrified as I was as I feel I am in really good hands with these people. Tanika followed up and was very helpful with all the pre-op and post-op appointments I have to have so, all in all, I highly recommend this crew with your eye needs - they know what they are doing, they understand the anxiety associated with eyes and are extremely pleasant to deal with. Dr. Shepps is an excellent eye surgeon and one that I can recommend without reservation. He has been my eye doctor for over 20 years. When it was clear that I would need cataract surgery, Dr. Shepps performed both surgeries, six weeks apart, with exceptional results. My worries about the eye surgery itself were unfounded in that it was painless and all I saw was flashes of light. Dr. Shepps monitors the progress of the eye's recovery for weeks and answers all questions that you might have. I was back to work two days after each surgery. And I am delighted with the results! I no longer need glasses for reading or distance. In addition to recommending Dr. Shepps, I also want to commend the Associate Ophthalmologists' staff. I went to get my eyes checked out and it was a good experience. I had never had a full checkup before, other than what places do for getting contacts. I found that the staff were very thorough and it seemed like they performed half a dozen tests. It took awhile but it was great to finally get that done. They explained each one to me which I liked. The could use an update on the decor...but I guess what doctor's office couldn't. But I found the place to be clean so that's all that mattered to me. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly. Dr. Rudick is very efficient and it is quite easy to get an appointment (on days when that office is open). I made the appointment same day when I started having a serious eye pain. I was seen within 5-10 minutes of entering the office. Dr. Rudick's diagnosed my problem quickly and even wrote down the name of the problem for me. He also did a normal eye exam, which I needed, but advised me to wait on picking up a new set of glasses (my eyes are very bad, so my glasses are very expensive) or contacts because he said my eye problem could be affecting the prescription so it wasn't worth it. He then told me what to do with the prescription and his office set me up with an appointment for the following week. The next week I was seen within a few minutes of entering the waiting room and was out within 15 or 20 minutes. He answered all of my questions thoughtfully and did not at all mind writing things down for me so I could read about them later. He was incredibly friendly and quick (a good thing in this city where we all have busy jobs and lives!). Also, his staff was very helpful in figuring out my insurance questions - I don't have vision care, but it turns out that the even normal eye exams are considered medical care if you get your eyes dilated. AO has two locations; my experience was at the 150 Broadway office. I had cataract surgery for both eyes. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Dr. Shepps and Associated Opthalmologists. The deep experience and professionalism of Dr. Shepps, Dr. Talbi, and every member of the staff allowed me to feel relaxed and confident about the surgery. Instructions to me were always easy to understand and follow. The surgery was performed at Mackool Eye Institute, another very positive experience. Dr. Shepps replicated the monovision correction that I had enjoyed for 25 years with contact lenses, and I am delighted with the results -- no need for glasses at all. read more

This places is a total ripoff. My wife went there for an annual eye exam via EyeMed that was supposed to be $10. Prior to the exam she mentioned that her eyes have been dry lately. Instead of giving her the $10 annual exam (which is what we wanted), she had two plugs inserted in her eye. Total due $420. No discussions. No less invasive options given (like OTC eye drops for instance). The old bate and switch. Plugs are not the first line of defense against dry eyes. Drops are. My wife mentioned the condition to see if they could write a prescription for effective drops. They did not. She was told to use the OTC drops. Then the plugs were inserted. I spoke with the Billing Dept the following day (after both plugs fell out mind you) and they refused to resolve the situation. I'm taking it up with my insurance provider as a fraudulent claim. I highly recommend you don't use this doctor. read more

I work downtown and went to their downtown location, I strongly suggest avoiding this place at all costs. I went for eye irritation and to get a new eye glass and contact RX. For my dry eyes he told me i need tear duct plugs, but did not tell me that my insurance would not cover them, so now i have been charged extra for that and it has not helped me dry eyes at all. Without giving me a proper exam he gave me an RX for my glasses, but told me i had to come back for another exam for my contacts. So of course this is multiple co pay charges. I go back for the contact exam and i get a new glasses rx as well, which is different than the first one they give me. I get new glasses and the RX is completely off. I had to go back and get ANOTHER exam to correct this. After going back a third time to get the RX corrected, she tells me that she gave me a RX for astigmatism, something i have never had, and she would remove it. i send my glasses back to get corrected and the astigmatism still wasn't removed!!! I called the office, which by the way, Carmen is the rudest women i have ever had the displeasure speaking too, and the doctor still hasn't called me back. Its been over a week....
