misleading and taken advantage by the employees and manager…read more A U-Haul manager who claims insurance is mandatory is not accurately representing the company's official policy; purchasing U-Haul's damage coverage is optional, not mandatory. However, declining the coverage means you are personally responsible for the full cost of any damage to the equipment, regardless of fault. U-Haul's official stance is that while their coverage is optional, personal auto insurance policies and most credit cards typically do not cover large cargo vans or moving trucks due to weight limits or vehicle type exclusions. This means that without purchasing U-Haul's coverage (like Safemove®), you would be fully liable for all repair costs or third-party damages out of pocket. Here is what you should know: Coverage is not mandatory to rent: U-Haul does not require proof of insurance to rent its equipment. You can rent the van without it. You are financially responsible: If you decline their coverage, you are agreeing in the rental contract to reimburse U-Haul for any and all damage immediately upon return of the equipment. Personal policies likely won't cover you: It is highly recommended to check with your personal auto insurance carrier first, as U-Haul representatives are not qualified to evaluate your personal policy's adequacy. In most cases, personal policies exclude large rental trucks and vans. Liability coverage: While U-Haul vehicles carry the state minimum liability coverage, if a claim is paid out on your behalf, the company can still come after you to collect the money paid out. The optional Safemove Plus® provides supplemental liability insurance that offers up to $1 million in protection, which is a significant reason many choose to purchase it. In summary, the manager was incorrect in stating the coverage is mandatory for the rental to occur, but strongly recommending it is common practice because of the significant financial risks involved in declining it. After feeling unease, I decided to contact the main corporate number and were told that it is an optional thing for the insurance, and it is not mandatory any type of way, and that the manager was misleading and basically bullied me into getting insurance, which I had witnesses with me so that helped out a lot. The female supervisor that spoke to me over the phone told me that I would be reimbursed for the money and that the location would be audited to see how many customers have went through the same thing and forced into any insurance being mandatory in the state of Florida. And that the employee that force or bullied me into the insurance would be held accountable for their lying. And they strongly said, please consider us in using us in the future because one location out of all the locations in Florida decided to try to force or bully their customers into insurance, knowing that it is optional, not mandatory just to make sales.
