An independent news and entertainment magazine, Vue Weekly is one of Edmonton's few alternative…read morenews sources. You'll find issues ranging from politics and local events, to subjects like food and dining, education, and the local arts culture. The magazine takes more of a liberal stance, as its audience consists mainly of a 20-35 age demographic. The best part about Vue is their focus on the arts scene in Edmonton. Whatever is news in film, music, or performing arts, they have it covered. Find towards the back of the magazine their weekly lists of art galas, live music performances and concerts, movie and play listings, as well as plenty of reviews on new films and shows as well. There may be no funny comics section or half-naked Sunshine Girl/Boy to wake you up in the morning, but it's still a great alternative to the mainstream print media out there. Plus, it's free and you can usually find one of their magazine dispensers around town, especially around campus.

Vue Weekly is another good news paper that focuses majorly on the local art scene or new movies and…read moremusic. What I really like about the paper is the authors. They aren't afraid to have opinions when they right their articles and it doesn't feel as if they are censoring themselves. Some other papers just display the facts without giving any real opinion on what is going on, but Vue has a backbone. It gets risky when it needs too. I still think See is a bit better when it comes to talking about local events but Vue is a great read and not bad to browse through.

Unfortunately, 24 Hours does not give a 24 hour picture of Edmonton. In fact, I don't think it…read morerepresents our city at all - at least not well. I don't like this paper, it's like the Metro. Both are useless and provide no real substance or value to readers (and that's saying a lot because both of them are free). The articles are sub par and the information provided by 24 is mediocre at best. Te only thing that this paper is good for is killing 5 minutes on the bus or fire kindling at a summer BBQ.

I looked over this magazine because there was a stack in Subway the other day. I don't really like…read morepicking up these so called magazines because the information is rarely interesting or relevant. Alas, I had no book, no magazine, no Edmonton Journal, so this was (not really) the next best thing. So why do I hate 24 Hours so much? It is pointless. It has very little information. I would say on average, it has maybe 50 articles through weekly the entire paper. Fifty! There are small blurbs on celebrities and this is really the only part I read. Other than that, the stories are not very up to date and show no real urgency. These papers, like other failing free magazines (Metro News) are floating around the city pointlessly. There are stacks and stacks of these papers laying around, and they will continue to lay around because they are not interesting to read. Sure. Pick one up to distract yourself while munching down on that turkey and ham sub, but don't go looking for them. Even if you did, they are easy to find because they are everywhere!
