While I don't live in Sherwood Park I do work here so I like to know what's going on and what is…read morenew and exciting in the county. I will say for a small local paper the Sherwood Park news does and amazing job of doing just that. The articles are just the right size for taking the paper on the bus while still providing enough detail to make it feel like the subject matter was adequately reported on. I also love that the paper is chalk full of stories that pertain to just the area with limited mention of Edmonton and Edmonton related stories. With Sherwood Park sitting so close to Edmonton's borders I know many look at it as just another part of Edmonton when in reality it is it's own community with a unique personality all it's own. Also there is a lovely balance of harder subject matter and feel good stories. With things in Alberta sadly being the way they are currently it's easy to get caught up in doom and gloom happenings but you can also flip open the paper here and read wonderful things about the holiday fundraiser for the women's shelter and the province providing funding to Strathcona Transit to buy more busses. The Sherwood Park news is a great five star local paper to get informed about Strathcona County whether your a citizen or just visiting like myself.

The St. Albert Gazette is a free paper with two editions weekly: Wednesday & Saturday…read more The Gazette is where St. Albert residents get all their local news and find out what's happening in their neighborhoods. The paper does contests and giveaways available both online and by submissions at their storefront. I really like the community information sections where they breakdown upcoming events by family, adult, etc. The Gazette has all your typical stuff from classifieds to add but they really excel on local news with a positive flare! I really like the number of articles they do about community volunteers and school children in the community. Of all the community newspapers I've had the pleasure to read, this one is at the top of my list!

I remember taking the grand tour of the facilities lead by managing editor, Sue Gawluk over a decade ago when I was a journalism student. It looks as though they may be looking to expand since I was surprised to see "for sale" signs all around the property. I went back there years later for some reason I can't recall but the front end staff were all out in the parking lot staring at the sky as a storm was approaching. When I walked in the doors they were rude. Maybe it was the weather. The newspaper is a decent read and constantly improve as years go by. I still flip through it now and then when I spot it.

All of this is available to me, all DJs are volunteers and pretty passionate about being there at all hours. They contribute in many ways, and are approachable and helpful. Want to work at a radio station? Want to learn to be a DJ and eventually get your own show? It's not that far away. Why not go on to an information session, and check out their website!

Their tag line is actually "Safe and fun for the whole family." You can have the radio on and not worry about your kids (or someone else's kids) hearing songs that glorify drinking, drugs and sex. It's positive music. I always enjoy the morning show when I'm getting ready for school. You know those people who tell lame jokes and make puns but you still love them because they are funny in their own right? That's Johnny Rocket and Malcolm Hunt. They are so much fun! They always have great trivia and they always make me laugh. I've called into to Shine and they are as nice on the phone as they are on air. If you are looking for a Christian radio station, or a station that plays family friendly music, check out 105.9 Shine Fm. It's great!

An independent news and entertainment magazine, Vue Weekly is one of Edmonton's few alternative…read morenews sources. You'll find issues ranging from politics and local events, to subjects like food and dining, education, and the local arts culture. The magazine takes more of a liberal stance, as its audience consists mainly of a 20-35 age demographic. The best part about Vue is their focus on the arts scene in Edmonton. Whatever is news in film, music, or performing arts, they have it covered. Find towards the back of the magazine their weekly lists of art galas, live music performances and concerts, movie and play listings, as well as plenty of reviews on new films and shows as well. There may be no funny comics section or half-naked Sunshine Girl/Boy to wake you up in the morning, but it's still a great alternative to the mainstream print media out there. Plus, it's free and you can usually find one of their magazine dispensers around town, especially around campus.

They aren't afraid to have opinions when they right their articles and it doesn't feel as if they are censoring themselves. Some other papers just display the facts without giving any real opinion on what is going on, but Vue has a backbone. It gets risky when it needs too. I still think See is a bit better when it comes to talking about local events but Vue is a great read and not bad to browse through.

I think this would be the closest thing to Alberta's own station if there was one, great rock with a little too much nickel back. Generally speaking, It's grotesque. The hosts are great! The contests are worth listening to but I can't drive someone around and expect it to be appropriate.... Not a bad thing to listen to on my own but sometimes it's a bit much. I usually agree with Yukon's 'big yap' segment and it's often funny... Paul brown can be funny, at least he can make fun out of himself but I don't need to gag while I'm driving. Gillian Foote's a great co-pilot to keep paul in check but I think she needs some sort of baton or cudgel for him. Still an entertaining morning show, Im an avid listener

The Bear is a radio station for people that don't like music. If you hate silence while you're…read moredriving or at work but you can't stand country, dance, or "lite" rock, then The Bear is probably just the perfect amount of adequate for you. If you're entertained by cheap, immature publicity stunts, then you'll love Paul Brown's morning show. The Bear plays all the usual radio filler fluff like Nickelback, Green Day, Linkin Park, Nickelback, Nickelback, and Nickelback. I read that back in the late '70s, radio stations used to advertise "Bee Gee Free Weekends". Radio stations today need to implement such a promotion regarding Nickelback. In 1966, dozens of radio stations held bonfire parties for burning Beatles records. So far, no station (that I know of) has done such a thing for Nickelback. The Bear could gain a lot of street cred for this. Let's go! Anyway, the station plays a few classic rock songs too, but it's always the same obligatory "You Shook Me All Night Long with a Whole Lotta Love because there was Another Brick in the Wall" stuff. The usual. The only great thing about The Bear is Yukon Jack's "My Big Yap" segment. That is gold. I hear his commentaries and think to myself, "how can this guy work at a station that he should be making fun of?" If you're seriously a fan of rock music, get satellite radio.
