With print going into decline thanks to the Internet, the Metro is the only newspaper in Edmonton that I feel has merged the two mediums together. I think of it as a Digital-Print Magazine. They plug in highlights from their social media outlets (like Twitter feeds) into sidebars on the newspaper, which I find useful since I use Twitter very often. If you want to take the paper along with you without physically carrying the paper, you can use your smart phone to scan the QR Code (kind of like a barcode) that let's you access a particular section of the newspaper instantly from your cellphone. I think that's pretty neat. You can also download and view the day's newspaper from their website as well, if you like. I like the articles they write, too. They all seemed very relevant and I could relate to them very easily. Lots of good tech news as well.

The articles are nothing of real interest. I don't even really see the point of this newspaper. With papers like Vue Weekly and See Magazine, I don't understand how Metro survives. I have also seen the pages of Metro littering our streets and numerous public restaurants and coffee shops. But I've never seen anyone actually reading one of them. I think that people like the idea of the free paper but once they pick it up, they are grossly disappointed.

The Examiner is a weekly newspaper that is obviously not able to compete with the journal. It is a…read moregood paper though. It mostly informs you on what is going on within your community and what local events are taking place. It also features a classifieds section which is good but since it only comes out weekly the Edmonton Journal keeps a up with a more current classifieds section. It is a good paper for keeping up with the community and letting you know what's new.

The Edmonton Examiner is a weekly community newspaper that is distributed through most parts of the…read morecity. There are different editions of the Examiner depending on the neighbourhood. Mostly focusing on community news, the Examiner features interesting events, people, and places in Edmonton. There is a large Classifieds section with people buying and selling things, looking for work or looking for workers, and offering services. It is delivered by the same people who deliver flyers, so areas without a flyer delivery person will not receive one. Fortunately, there are also copies available in grocery stores and libraries.

While I don't live in Sherwood Park I do work here so I like to know what's going on and what is…read morenew and exciting in the county. I will say for a small local paper the Sherwood Park news does and amazing job of doing just that. The articles are just the right size for taking the paper on the bus while still providing enough detail to make it feel like the subject matter was adequately reported on. I also love that the paper is chalk full of stories that pertain to just the area with limited mention of Edmonton and Edmonton related stories. With Sherwood Park sitting so close to Edmonton's borders I know many look at it as just another part of Edmonton when in reality it is it's own community with a unique personality all it's own. Also there is a lovely balance of harder subject matter and feel good stories. With things in Alberta sadly being the way they are currently it's easy to get caught up in doom and gloom happenings but you can also flip open the paper here and read wonderful things about the holiday fundraiser for the women's shelter and the province providing funding to Strathcona Transit to buy more busses. The Sherwood Park news is a great five star local paper to get informed about Strathcona County whether your a citizen or just visiting like myself.

An independent news and entertainment magazine, Vue Weekly is one of Edmonton's few alternative…read morenews sources. You'll find issues ranging from politics and local events, to subjects like food and dining, education, and the local arts culture. The magazine takes more of a liberal stance, as its audience consists mainly of a 20-35 age demographic. The best part about Vue is their focus on the arts scene in Edmonton. Whatever is news in film, music, or performing arts, they have it covered. Find towards the back of the magazine their weekly lists of art galas, live music performances and concerts, movie and play listings, as well as plenty of reviews on new films and shows as well. There may be no funny comics section or half-naked Sunshine Girl/Boy to wake you up in the morning, but it's still a great alternative to the mainstream print media out there. Plus, it's free and you can usually find one of their magazine dispensers around town, especially around campus.

Vue Weekly is another good news paper that focuses majorly on the local art scene or new movies and…read moremusic. What I really like about the paper is the authors. They aren't afraid to have opinions when they right their articles and it doesn't feel as if they are censoring themselves. Some other papers just display the facts without giving any real opinion on what is going on, but Vue has a backbone. It gets risky when it needs too. I still think See is a bit better when it comes to talking about local events but Vue is a great read and not bad to browse through.

The St. Albert Gazette is a free paper with two editions weekly: Wednesday & Saturday…read more The Gazette is where St. Albert residents get all their local news and find out what's happening in their neighborhoods. The paper does contests and giveaways available both online and by submissions at their storefront. I really like the community information sections where they breakdown upcoming events by family, adult, etc. The Gazette has all your typical stuff from classifieds to add but they really excel on local news with a positive flare! I really like the number of articles they do about community volunteers and school children in the community. Of all the community newspapers I've had the pleasure to read, this one is at the top of my list!

This newspaper has been covering the news in the St. Albert area since 1961. It's one of two St…read more Albert newspapers and is delivered to St. Albert residents (either directly or now via newspaper box) biweekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I remember taking the grand tour of the facilities lead by managing editor, Sue Gawluk over a decade ago when I was a journalism student. It looks as though they may be looking to expand since I was surprised to see "for sale" signs all around the property. I went back there years later for some reason I can't recall but the front end staff were all out in the parking lot staring at the sky as a storm was approaching. When I walked in the doors they were rude. Maybe it was the weather. The newspaper is a decent read and constantly improve as years go by. I still flip through it now and then when I spot it.

The Gateway helps pass so much time when you are at the U of A. I have seen recent copies of the paper and am glad to note the more sophisticated feel it has now, both in terms of the writing and layout. Back in my day, things were very irreverent to the point of being insulting, and in fact, that was a reason I left the paper after only my second year of university. A campus paper should push the edges of controversy, but it is possible to go too far, and student journalists sometimes don't have the maturity or experience to admit they made a mistake. However, I am glad to see the paper thriving.

MacEwan's Intercamp is a pretty decent school newspaper. It's not the best but it'll do!…read more There grammatical errors in it (which drive me crazy) but it definitely helps to pass the time on campus. I, and many of my fellow MacEwanites can testify to that. Students write and publish the paper so I really respect it for that reason. It's also nice that the topics covered in Intercamp are what students care about, for the most parts (since it's written by the students). Overall, it's a decent publication and it gets 4 stars because it helps me to kill time on campus. All students can agree that's a very important characteristic!
