We used the Metro Manzoni lines many times during our stay after it was recommended by our hotel. It was certainly much, much cheaper than taking cabs everywhere.
(+) Very fast and affordable way to get around Rome. 1.50 euros for a single trip or better yet, 7 euros for a 24 hours unlimited pass. We would just get the pass and bop around different areas of town. It came in very handy.
(-) Kind of dirty. I can only compare to other bullet trains I've used in other countries and I can tell you that Bangkok and Tokyo were both much, much cleaner.
(-) Beware of pickpockets! Apparently they are very skilled here. We were warned on our first day in the city by the hotel staff. Luckily we brought jackets that had multiple zipper pockets n the inside, so we made it through the trip without a hitch. Suck on that, gypsies!
(+/-) Heavily armed military presence all over at all stations. That is good for protection purposes, I suppose. On the flip side, they always made me a bit nervous as it seemed most of them kept their fingers on their triggers. Yikes.
3 stars.
