The non-stop train service connects Rome's Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to the city's central train station, Roma Termini. The trip takes approx 32 minutes and there is one every 15 minutes. It's €14 per person, which we purchased online. There is a mini-groups discounted fare- 4 tickets in a single transaction for €40. There was 3 of us (€42), so it was kind of annoying we couldn't do the discounted fare. read more

On Thursday, January 1, 2026, our family of four (myself, my partner, and our two children aged 5 and 4) arrived at Termini from Napoli. We headed to the Leonardo Express platform to catch the Leonardo Express to Fiumicino Airport. The next train was leaving a couple of minutes later. We tried to tap our credit cards on the automatic machines on the platform but they were not working. We asked a Trenitalia employee and a controller, who were talking to each other at the entrance of the train, if it was ok to pay on board, and they said yes, so we decided to board the train immediately. After we found seats on the train, I pulled out my cell phone and purchased tickets online. I saw that we needed to purchase only two tickets since each adult could be accompanied by one child (please see attached copy of the tickets). Just before arriving to Fiumicino Airport, the same controller we had seen when we boarded the train asked for our tickets. I showed her the tickets on my phone and she said "I do not see tickets here". At first I did not understand what she was saying, so I asked her to repeat and explain what the problem was. That is when I realized that, in the rush, I made the mistake of purchasing tickets from Fiumicino to Termini, instead of from Termini to Fiumicino. This is my mistake, I admit it. I tried to explain to the controller that we were not going to use the tickets I had bought (we live in the USA and have no plan to travel back to Rome soon) but she was very rude and made no effort to try and understand that this was just an honest mistake. She then said I had to purchase new tickets and that the cost of each ticket, when purchased on board, is 64 euros per ticket. I was so shocked that I first refused. The controller then threatened to call the airport police if I refused to pay. Having no choice, I paid, using my American Express card to pay the exorbitant amount of 128 euros (please see attached copy of that receipt). This was a total scam. The controller never informed us that purchasing tickets on board cost the astronomical amount of 64 euros per ticket. The controller was rude and discourteous and made no effort at understanding the situation. We were just tourists trying to make our way to the airport, not delinquants trying to get a free ride, but we were treated as if we had deliberately tried to break the law. I complained at the station at the airport and was given an email address to send my complaint. Needless to say, I never received a reply. read more

What a marvelous way to cruise quickly, cheaply and safely around Rome, Italy. Many of our friends and sources told us about the trains and how easily it was from the airport to the hotel area. #truth For about $15 US dollars you can travel pretty far, much cheaper than a cab or an Uber (if you can find one). I'll admit, after a 13 hour flight a train was not what I wanted in the 109 degree heat with full on jet lag, but it was comfortable and easy. I'm glad we tried. Easy inexpensive transport to get you from FCO to Roma Termini. 14 euros per person. Taxis will cost more. It is about a 5 min or so walk from the airport terminals. The only weird part is buying the tickets and timing it right so that you take the right train. -Make sure you pay for the right train - a cheaper one may have a much longer ride. Tip- Make sure you validate your ticket before you hop onto the train and make sure you have it handy because they also check on-board! There's also restrooms onboard, which I didn't use (thankfully), but it is nice option to have for emergencies. read more

TRAVELERS WITH YOUNG TEENS BEWARE. The train service itself is fine. It gets you from FCO to Termini just fine. But unfortunately their machines are not clear at all even if you read the fine print. My son is 13, and the screen said children 13-14 are 50% off on certain trains. There was no way to identify which train was which, however, as it was not marked, so we assumed it must be the one we had already indicated we wanted tickets for. We paid our fares, validated our tickets, and got on the train. When the ticket guy came over he said my son wasn't discounted at all and then charged us the price of an adult fare AND a 50€ penalty! That's completely absurd. If you want to charge the price of the apparently correct ticket, fine, but it was THEIR MACHINE that wasn't clear. Therefore, I'll be disputing the 50€ charge on my credit card. If you have 3+ people over age 12 I highly recommend skipping this ripoff until they fix their machines to not let you buy something that's not applicable so you aren't a screwed traveler too. Rideshare, taxi, and bus all would've been cheaper, and the first two also would've gotten us right to our door too. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT UNTIL THEY DON'T SELL YOU TICKETS THAT AREN'T APPLICABLE. read more

Easiest and most predictable way to get from Termini central station to the airport and vice versa. There are different rail company and associated machines, so it's pretty confusing. This express train is direct and is efficient. Cost was €14 each way. Consider buying a round trip fare. American credit cards often don't work at the machine even though they have chips. Instead, go to the window to buy your tickets. After determining which platform your train is on, scan the bar code to enter the gate. It is important that you then validate your ticket at the machines (that look like posts) right beyond the gate. Train personnel will check your ticket mid-trip and you will get fined if you don't have a validated ticket. read more

The train is super narrow but I will say it's convenient to use. We took the train from the airport to termini. Then from termini to our hotel which is about four stops away. It's very convenient & there is an elevator so people with luggage or wheel chairs can get around. I think we will take this way to go to our hotel near the airport as well. read more

This is the easiest way to travel between the airport and Termini station. I used it a few times in the last couple of weeks, and it was always on time and simple. Just remember to validate your ticket at the green machine next to the train. After my first 8-hour plane ride, I was beyond tired and couldn't find the machine, so I walked onto the train to see if there was a machine on the train. The second I walked on, a screaming man followed me on -- very upset that I had apparently bypassed him in my quest to find the validation machine. Yikes! So basically: Validate OUTSIDE, not inside, and you're all good. As of this writing, the ticket costs 14 euro one-way. Trains come regularly daily. You can find the express train at platform 24 in Termini. Follow the signs to the train if you're at the airport. Takes 30 minutes to get from Point A to Point B. Clean trains; plenty of leg room and chargers. Good experience. read more

Scaming tourists. When you buy your ticket it says on the screen that children from 0-12 travels for free with an adult. This worked on the way to Rome but on our way to the airport suddenly the child needed to be UNDER 12. The ticket man had no service mind whatsoever and I had to pay additional extra 64 euro. This is the most convenient way to get from FCO to Termini station in Rome. It's easy to use one of the ticket self-service machines (there's an English option) to purchase tickets without going through a ticket counter. While on the train to Rome, someone comes around and punches the ticket. Staff told us since we were headed towards Termini no validation was needed. The train provides luggage space but get there early or it fills up. Tickets were 14 euros each and the ride takes 32 minutes. It's air-conditioned but no WiFi. Clean, airconditioned train that goes directly from FCO to rome terminal. There are other alternatives that are cheaper but after a 9 hr flight, this seemed easiest and most comfortable. Each tix is 14 Euro. But biggest thing is make sure you validate your tix at the green box before you board. And make sure you hear the stamp noise. A good service to have, but there are better options. Read on and you may be able to save some time, money and stress... The Leonardo Express is a nice service from the airport to the city, in that it runs every 30 minutes, and takes you to Rome's main train station quickly. At the airport, the station is in an easy-to-find location. The problem isn't at the airport, however, it is once you get to Rome. Buying Your Ticket: There are fantastic automated ticket machines at the station, and they are multi-lingual. The problem with these machines is that they will not accept most credit cards that don't have a microchip in them. All European credit cards have this, but as of this writing, most American cards do not. If this happens to you, you will need to go to the "live person" ticket booth, where they WILL be able to take credit cards without a microchip. Roma Termini Station: The Leonardo Express arrives at one of the least convenient tracks at the station. It is quite a long walk from virtually everything, as its rail head is not where the other trains are. This may cause some confusion if you are not familiar with the station, so beware. Furthermore, if you are connecting to a train to go elsewhere, you will have quite a walk to get to your other train. Chaos: When you arrive at the airport in Rome, you will most likely feel that it is one of the more chaotic airports you have experienced. That is NOTHING compared to the Termini train station. Again, if you have never been, it can be quite overwhelming. A Better Option: OK, I promised a better way to get to the city. Rome has many train stations. There is one in particular called "Roma Tiburtina". It is also downtown, very close to Termini. Recently, they have been doing a major upgrade on this station, and it is significantly easier to navigate. What makes this station good is that it is much smaller, but has very frequent trains. If you are going into Rome, get a normal train to this station. It is cheaper and only adds a few minutes to the ride. Once you are at the station, it is a short walk to get a taxi that will take you anywhere in Rome, without all of the walking and chaos at Termini. If you are connecting to a train to go elsewhere, Tiburtina is the OTHER station with high speed rail in Rome. Just about every high speed destination ALSO has trains to and from Tiburtina. But you will walk less, not fight crowds, and not get lost finding your track here. read more

We traveled June 2015. Using this train was very easy. We did some research and we used the website www.roninrome.com for help. This guy is very detailed on how to use this train. So here was our experience with this train. Every thing we experienced was exactly as written and explained in the website roninrome.com. Everyone is worried about validating their ticket to avoid penalties. There was a train attendant/worker who stood at the validation machine and took each and every persons ticket, validated it in the machine, and returned the tickets to the passengers. I assume this was done to make sure everyone was validated and to make sure the lines did not get backed up. This ensures that you will not get fined. The train can get packed. You might have to stand the entire duration of the trip. Some people were sitting on the steps and ground of the train. You have 90 minutes from validation to use the train. If you just miss the train, you can get on the next one in 30 minutes. There are monitors on the train telling you what stop you are at. So you will know where you are at every point. You can keep your luggage with you or you can stow it in the overhead compartments. They are very small so many people kept their luggage next to them and their seats. The tickets still cost $14 Euros per person. There are restrooms in the train station and they are free. Just follow the signs. No restrooms on this train. read more

Convenient, inexpensive ($14€ each way), direct and comfortable...it is an excellent option to get from Rome's main airport to the heart of downtown (Termini Station). I was a bit hesitant to use this mode of transportation as we were unfamiliar with it's location (at the airport) and neither of us speak Italian, but finding it was a breeze (it was well marked) and it was fairly straight forward to use. We purchased our ticket at the automated attendant and boarded the train almost immediately. Trip to Termini station is approx. 30 minutes. On our return trip from Rome, we had to go to an actual attendant as the automated teller rejected my PIN. There was no line up and the transaction went quite smoothly, but be forewarned that the attendants are cash only.We got our ticket and boarded a train and were on our way shortly thereafter. Once en route, a "conductor" came by to verify our ticket (much like they do on the GO trains here)...and we had not validated it (once you purchase your ticket you are required to validate it by inserting it into a machine that date/time stamps it). The fine for not validating your ticket is $100€ per person or $50€ if you pay the conductor cash. Our conductor did not make an issue of it and just punched our tickets....but signs were clearly visible on the train advising of this fact...strange that none were on the platforms prior to boarding it as we had not validated them on the way into Rome either. Once purchased, the ticket expires in 90 minutes, so I don't know what the issue would be...as everyone on it was going to the airport. At Termini, the station is massive and getting to the train is quite the walk from the Metro (subway).....so if you're dragging luggage behind you, it is quite the hike. Also, the train we were on had no place to store your luggage...so people left them at the doors or in aisles....which caused many to roll randomly throughout the train while we were in transit For ease of use and convenience, I would use this again when if flying into Rome. read more

Simply the best and easiest way to get from Charles de Gaule/FCO to Rome! This is a 30 minute express train from the airport to Termini station in Rome from which you can easily catch a train, taxi or walk to hotels, etc. The train is clean and comfortable and you just take the first seats you like and place your baggage on racks above for the short ride. Any bus or car transport will take up to 3 times as long. Do note that the tickets are time stamped for your train time. Rather than miss your departure time due to a late plane or waiting on luggage, do not buy your ticket in advance. Once you have all of your stuff at FCO follow the signs to the Leonardo Express. Once you reach the train departure area you can buy your ticket from the clearly marked ticket booth or from the gift shop right beside it. The pricing seemed to be the same. After buying your ticket, you can board the train by scanning your ticket at the kiosk/scanner at the entrance to the platform. TIP: If you know when you are leaving to return to FCO for the trip home, you may want to go ahead and buy your ticket for the return in the main Termini station lobby. If you decide to wait then at a minimum check the ticket booth operating hours as they are not open for the first morning trains running to the airport. We bought our tickets the night before and were ready to use them on the first train the next morning which was good because everything was closed at Termini except the early trains that were running. You do not want to get stuck without a ticket and miss your train - if this does happen anyway, just catch a taxi from the station but be sure to ask for one that takes credit cards and the fee unless you have enough cash to cover the fee. read more

Hey, we got to the airport on time -- that was the purpose! Riding the Leonardo Express train to the FCO airport was very easy and convenient. We did not purchase tickets in advance. We just went to our nearest train station (Roma Tuscolana) and grabbed tickets to Termini. Once at Termini, we simply found a Trenitalia ticket machine and purchased the Leonardo Express tickets. The tickets for the airport express train are more expensive than other train tickets, but the train is direct to the airport with no stops. The departure/arrival times listed for the Leonardo Express were EXACT. I checked my watch. The train was clean and was not crowded at all. (We rode on a Thursday around 9:30am.) Once we arrived at FCO, the walk from the train platform at FCO to the ticketing gates was a little long, but I think the airport is huge anyway. A quick and convenient method of transportation to get to/from FCO and the rest of Rome. If and when I return to Rome again and use the FCO airport, I will definitely use the Leonardo Express train. Tickets are easily obtained from one of the trenitalia machines where you can pay by visa/mastercard or cash. The train seats are comfy and they have storage for your bags and luggages. Depending where you are staying in Rome, there is another train from the airport that stops at the Trastevere Station, on the other side of the city from Termini. Since we were staying at the Hotel Ponte Sisto just across the Tiber from Trastevere, we opted for this one since it was closer and much less expensive, less crowded than the Leonardo. Either way, we would have had to take a taxi from the station to the hotel. It was a bit of a trick finding a taxi, the only glitch. read more

First: It is good that such a thing as the airport express exists. BUT 1. mind the fact that it is advisable to buy a ticket at one of the machines - other it cost you 1 Euro in agency fee. 2. Be there early: the trains leave at platform 25 which is as far away from the station entrance (Termini) as possible. 3. Being early is also a good idea, as the train is very crowed (leaves every 30 mins ... and collects passengers in the meantime). Trains to Termini Station start at 6:35 in the morning, with trains running at 5 and 35 minutes after the hour. The last train of the day departs at 23.35 (11:37pm) The train covers the 37 km in around 31 minutes. read more

hands down the best way to get into the heart of Rome. you can take a bus for 6 or 7 euros but be warned, you'll sit in traffic for at least an hour and a half. Pay 14e and get into Termini station in 30 minutes! it's fast, clean, efficient & easy to purchase tickets at the station. Just make sure you get your ticket validated in one of the boxes at the entrance of the station. I am quite happy with this service. We couldn't buy at the mashines, they were out of service. Instead of queing at the agencies, we opted for buying an instant ticket at the check-in counter on the platform. That costs you an extra Euro, but in our case granted us 30min+ in beautiful Rome. Btw: You CAN go with a local train, that much we managed to assess, at approx half the fare and double the time. But we did not manage to gather the details quick enough and any minute longer outside in the sunshine seemed more worth it. read more

We did not validate our train tickets when traveling to the airport because we didn't know we had to -- it isn't indicated anywhere. Not at the kiosks where we bought our tickets, not on the platform, not on the web page, not by the person who looked at our tickets before letting us on to the platform. Nowhere. We were almost to the airport when the conductor looked at our tickets and informed us that we were being fined for $50 each for not having a stamp. We watched him collect $50 from 6 other tourists in our car who also had no about the validation. So -- the train should call it what it is -- a tourist tax. It seems the train intentionally ensures tourists won't know the system so they can be a source for profit. How does Rome allow this corruption and scam? We spent 11 lovely days in Rome and felt very safe. The only criminals we encountered were this train company. Shameful. read more

Very much agree with the other review suggesting you take the 8 euro train to Tiburtina rather than this service unless you are staying within walking distance of Termini or your hotel is on the A line. If your hotel is on the B line or you will have to take a cab anyway take the other train (F1?) to Tiburtina and save six euros. read more

It s difficult to figure out where to buy the tickets as everyone seem to sell them. Use the machines if you can, as there is less chance of being charged a fee. Make sure you are there on time as it is not always clear which platform the train is leaving from. Also, the first part of the train was nt leaving when we were at termini station. This past summer, I got to the train early, said hello to the man checking tickets and confirmed this was my train, sat patiently in the car trying to decipher the announcements while replying to work emails, the train starts, a woman comes up and ask for my ticket, and 7 months later I'm still mad. How could a city as great as Rome is allow this to be the last memory people have before their departure. Thanks for the visit and oh, by the way, give us fifty more Euros.
