If you have a lot of luggage I would pay more for Business class as there is more room for luggage. Quick service, they offer a snack, water, coffee etc. free WiFi is included with power outlets. Beware if you choose to ride this train! For my American travelers who think this is like any other train (like I did), this is the bottom of the barrel train service. Horrible! My wife and I bought 1st class tickets and were assigned rail car #7, almost in the back. The air conditioning went out numerous times in all cabins to the point that people were complaining and getting up to go stand in the middle vestibule area between trains because it was slightly cooler. When I asked about the air, workers would just say "air sometimes yes, sometimes no". I will NEVER travel this company again. Just horrible all the way around. read more

So there appears to be dueling reviews for the Italian Rail system so in the interest of full disclosure I will re-post a previous review I just did here. So this was our first train experience in Italy and it could not have been better. We took the high speed train from Venice to Florence and found it so easy and cost effective it will alter how we travel in Europe moving forward. We booked ahead and reserved seats in the Executive car. It ended up being a bit over 220 Euros for me and my son and was well worth the upgrade. We did not use the lounge, but once on board the seats are massive, there are a total of 8 in the car itself and we could easily park our luggage in the conference room. There was a meal service included with our ticket on our route along with the espresso! The train ran on time and was glass smooth. We hit 197 kph at one point and made 3 stops during our 2.5 hour trip. Even with our upgrade it was cheaper than flying and way less time dealing with airport security, dealing with your luggage etc. read more

We had the pleasure of taking Frecciarossa trains 5 times on this trip to Italy. My husband booked the same seats in the same quiet car each time. We were so impressed by the service of staff on each and every train we took, but especially the two trips where we encountered Valeria, our conductor. She was especially helpful to me in securing Sale Blu assistance to help me on and off the trains and having wheelchairs waiting for me when we arrived at our destinations. Sala Blu is a free service to assist travelers with reduced mobility. She told us how to call and set up this service for each leg of our trip. The service is available in over 360 train stations. It was so perfect for me, as I was having difficulty walking. The trains were on time, fast, clean, and quiet - creating a perfect journey for us. They also served us drinks and snacks in Business Class. We highly recommend booking your tickets in advance to get the best fares and travel by train in Italy. It is well worth it. read more

This is pretty much one of a few options to get around in Italy other than buses or taxi. If you are at the port, this is the primary and most popular way to get to Rome. Ticket sales can be purchased at the station window, kiosk or even on the phone app. The trains can get super busy and overwhelmed when large cruise ships arrive into the port stations. Seating and operating temperature in the cars and usually comfortable and for the most part, they run on schedule. Note that they apparently also have worker strikes from time to time. We were in port and waiting for a train that never showed up. We later found out that they were on a one day strike but oddly, they still had a few routes running on that day. There is no formal announcement of the strike and they still post the train time on their Apps and station status board. Italy, worst trip of my life.. My entire luggage was stolen on a Trenitalia Frecciarossa train during my journey from Venice to Milan on December 10, 2024. The theft occurred on Train No. 9732, traveling from Venezia S. Lucia to Milano Centrale around 14:00. I immediately filed a report with the station police at Milano Centrale and submitted a claim with Trenitalia Frecciarossa's customer service in Milan. However, more than five months have passed, and I have yet to receive any response or follow-up from Trenitalia. This incident caused significant disruption and financial hardship. Due to my stolen passport, I was unable to return home the following day and was forced to remain in Milan for several extra days. I had to pay out-of-pocket for a new flight, hotel accommodations, and passport replacement. I was left stranded in the middle of Milan with nothing but the clothes on my back--no clothes, no laptop, no toiletries, no make-up, nothing. The lack of communication or accountability from Trenitalia has only made this situation worse. I'm extremely disappointed with the way this has been handled. My train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale was clean, quiet and smooth. A little expensive at €30 for a one-hour journey and that's with the ticket purchased two days in advance. Ouch. If you don't pick a seat, they pick one for you. For some reason, they put people together instead of spreading them out. And you can be absolutely sure that your ticket will be checked so have it ready. There is a dining car but for this short trip, I did not leave my seat. We purchased 1st class tickets. The coaches were marked with small 5-inch printed paper labels taped to the window of the car, not visible from the platform. We could not find coach 1. We had to run to the rear of the train for coach 1. We were positioned at the front of the platform where we thought coach 1 would be. I asked a train employee where coach one was, and she ignored me. We found coach 1 after several minutes. All the while the clock is ticking on the doors too close. We finally found coach 1. In hindsight 2 pick pockets cut in front of me and my friend. I turned to help my 72-year-old friend with his luggage. One of the pick pockets pretended to help him with his luggage while brushing up against me. The other Pick pocket continued to hinder the boarding process. No employees offered to help with the boarding, nor did they supervise the boarding. Later, the same employee that ignored my plea for help boarding said she "found my wallet" She asked how much money was in my wallet. She spoke English now. She appeared to be dishonest and said my wallet was empty. At his time I suspected the employee was part of the pick pocket gig. The whole boarding process is like Zombie apocalypse. The employees don't bother to help. What is their job anyways? Later that day at another stop, some scary people boarded the train with 3 pit bulls. They looked like gangsters. Soon after the train stopped and police boarded. The gangsters were kicked off the train. Again, if the train employees did their job and helped with boarding this 2nd potential crime could have been stopped. The police intervention also made the train late. There was no snack. Nice train service but buying ticket is not easy. I was going to Fumicino Airport from Roma Termini but in Online buying I could not find a clear name for the airport to pick from a long list. Tried to find app to download but could not find any. Found one ticket buying machine where at least 50 people were in the line, everybody was having some difficulty but no staff was around to help. When we stated entering from the gate scan machine was not working. Spent more than one hour on Roma Termini before boarding the train - I was about to miss the flight. read more

The family at AtlasAdventured would travel with Trenitalia again! We traveled from Geneva, Switzerland to Venice, Italy via a Trenitalia Eurocity high speed train while using our EuRail Pass. It was a long journey, taking about 7 hours, but it is one of the most beautiful train rides. Riding along the most beautiful background of the Swiss Alps, lush green pastures, and picturesque villages, it's almost like a dream. As for the journey itself, it was a little bit of a tough one. Since our train departed so early, little to no restaurants were open in the train station, but we assumed we would be able to get food on the train. When we boarded, we asked when the dining cart would open and they stated it would open in 30 min. After an hour it still wasn't open. We asked again and they told us it would be another hour. A little over 3 hours into our train ride did they finally open, and when they did the gentleman at the counter was rude. When he brought our food some items were missing, and he said they had run out, but did not offer us a refund or another item. He said we would have to get back in line to order something else. Keep in mind, this food item was for a very hungry toddler. We ended up just sharing food with our child so it was ok. All of that being said, the food was actually pretty good. The train itself was a little dated. The seats were comfortable, but dingy. There were outlets for charging, but they barely worked, and there was WIFI available, but that was not working either. I wasn't too upset by this because the view was really the only thing I wanted to watch. We have taken a lot of Trenitalia trains, and this was the first time we experienced the late opening of the dining car, but the lack of WIFI connectivity has happened to us a lot. There's no better way to see the cities of Italy than by train. There are a lot of reasons to travel by train in Italy: the romance, the convenience, the cost, and the scenic settings are the first that come to mind. We took Italia Rail # 23353 from Florence to Pisa. It was on platform # 2 which you cannot find at first go. It's kind of hidden. Check-in was easy. Train boarded on time and reached Pisa on time too. It was a double-decker train. We had a 2nd class ticket, it means we can sit anywhere in the designated class. Ample leg space, assigned places for keeping big luggage. The ride was smooth and did not face anything south. read more

I got charged €110 for a €56 euro trip because I accidentally booked for the following day. Rude staff show to remorse or will to help, just 'give me the money'. Seems like that's the common mindset in Italy, to take money from tourists at any chance they get (parking fines, speeding fines, pick pockets, taxes and so on). Utterly hopeless. Avoid wherever possible. We took several trains in Italy, while we rarely had an easy time of it, the TrenItalia ones were the worst. We were on the train from Florence to Rome and it was cancelled at a tiny station in Orte. Found this easy to use going from Rome to Spoleto and back. Was surprised by how much time we spent in tunnels vs outside, and also by the air pressure change (lots of ear popping). It was not crowded at all in the way to Spoleto (a Saturday), but going back to Rome on a Saturday almost every seat was taken. Recommend buying train tickets in advance. read more

Trenitalia was our main use of transportation to get from city to city during our trip to Italy. We took at least one train almost everyday, so we gained our share of experiences with this company. We always booked our tickets on their website and it was super easy to do. The trains were very big so most of the time we were all able to grab a seat with no problem. When it came to the service, most of the time the attendants were nice, however there were a few nasty ones, after a situation where a couple of my friends accidentally bought their tickets for the wrong day. Trenitalia seems to be the one of the main companies that the trains run through, so I'll use it again whenever I come back to Italy. I just wonder how many peoples understand all the rules and regulations for taking the trains in Italy. Also if the travelers know which types of train tickets needed time validation (e.g. one way ticket with set time vs round trip tickets with return trip without set time vs internet ticket...)? I had been in Italy twice and ridden the trains around 20 times. However in Oct 27 2023 while at La Spezia port from our Norwegian cruise, we visited Monterosso and Vernazza (on the way back from Monterosso) of Cinque Terre. In Monterosso station we bought our return tickets to La Spezia station by using the kiosk ticket machine and we tried to get on the next 11:35 am train (with a few minutes to spare) and stopping at Vernazza. After activated the kiosk machine (and we did not scroll down the train schedules) and without knowing, the kiosk ticket machine sold us the 1:30 PM tickets instead of the next 11:35 am train (so do not assume the ticket machine would show you immediate next train) and we got on the 11:35 am train. When we got off the train at Vernazza, we were stopped by a train station inspector and fined for 50 euros for each of us (total 100 euros or equivalent USD 110), for taking an earlier train. There were thousands of marathon runners in the station trying to go home after the race and many just carried the water bottles with no tickets, and we were only ones got ticketed (may be because I looked like tourist by carrying the backpack in the front. (We were almost got pickpocketed in Rome subway station a week before)). We bought the real tickets and we were not ticketless but they treated us like ticketless with such hefty fines. (Apparently you can exchange tickets for another train with the permission of the station staff and with penalty of 5 euros.) I really do not want to call Trenitalia a tourist trap, but in Italy beware of the pickpocket, the immediate information on the kiosk ticket machine and the train station inspector. read more

We were fortunate enough to run into English speaking staff members who could help along the way (sometimes the translations you find online don't work). Trains were for the most part clean. This train rail goes all over Rome, Italy. It's easy to buy your tickets online, you can download the app on your phone, search your destination and time of departure and arrival. My family and I were trying to get to Rome from Capannelle. It's a very short ride and cheap: 5 euro for 5 people that occupy a sit and free for children 4 and below. The challenging part was going back to Capannelle from Rome. The terminal is huge, it's probably the main hub, it operates like an airport. We purchased our tickets from a machine, big mistake on my part everything was in Italian. I have to asked someone which one was our platform or which way to board our train. I observed there's policemen everywhere, and there's costumer service, but I was not able to use that since we figured things out with our google translate. Beware of your companions, belongings and valuables since it's easy to get lost. I will definitely utilize this train system again when and if I come back to Rome. Not going to lie, Europe and Asia rocks when it comes to public transportation, especially railway. Visited Italy last year and decided to do a little digging to see if I could pre book my entire trip with the local railway provider. Sure enough I came across Trenitalia which offered to fully book all of my connections, long distance, and short trips while in Italy well in advance. Was offered several discount for booking for two, advance booking, and non rush hour booking, not huge saving, but hey who can say no to discounts. Fast forward to Italy, I printed and also digitally took a picture of all of my tickets that I had printed out months prior. Not once did I run into a problem, most of the train employees had no issue taking a peek at my phone to verify my ticket. Most of the long distance trains were immaculate and offered food and drink. Not to mention most were bullet trains and go you from point A to point B in a blink of an eye. For the shorter trips, I was assigned to local non updated trains, but they were clean, yet showed their age. Having booked everything in advance, it really reduced the stress as I knew when I needed to board a train, only thinking that was involved was finding the platform. I cannot wait to get back to Italy and take full advantage of this wonderful service once more! read more

Trenitalia is the official train operator in Italy. They are responsible for operating the regional trains (slower) as well as the faster InterCity and Freccia trains that connect major cities together. On my two-week Italy trip I used Trenitalia to get me from Venice to Florence then from Florence to Rome. Buying tickets seems to be relatively straightforward, though I did take advice from seat61 and bought my tickets through an intermediary site Italiarail rather than directly through Trenitalia. Since I knew of my departure and arrival dates in each city I took full advantage of their "super economy" tier. If you know your dates you can book your ticket up to 60% off the base fare if you are willing to purchase a NO REFUND/NO EXCHANGE ticket. These tickets are available beginning 120 days prior to travel. Keep in mind, "super economy" refers to the price and not the class of seats/service on the train. There are four tiers of seats: Standard, Premium, Business and Executive. Taking advantage of super economy I was able to purchase business class at a cheaper rate than standard at base pricing. As a solo traveler this was more of a safety issue than anything else and this was true when I rode the trains as mostly everyone consisted of families and businessmen, very few travelers. Here are the rates presented to me when I purchased my tickets 120 days prior. Venice to Florence: ~2 hours (€35.90) Florence to Rome: ~1.5 hours (€29.90) As you are buying a non-refundable ticket for a specific date/time your ticket is already pre-validated. No need to validate your ticket at the train station. On my travel days the experience was a pleasurable one. The seats were comfortable and I was able to fit my luggage above me while keeping an eye on it. On business class you get served with a drink and snack. Since I wasn't hungry at the time I have used the snacks as food on other days and are of good quality. There is also wifi access on Treintalia but it involves a nominal amount of (€0.01), a phone and a valid e-mail address. I haven't taken the train yet but the trentitalia pass for foreigners is truly a waste of time. Activated it thinking it would allow me to pick a start date, but it just started from the day of activation (which was written in an email but not in the instructions or stated anywhere as a warning before activation). Tried to ask them if there was a way to deactivate it again, but the customer help just kept telling me they don't do refunds - which is not what I was asking. Went to buy a ticket for within the activated period (two days before its departure) and utilizing the pass wasn't an option despite the trip qualifying. Steer clear of purchasing any passes if you are not from Italy. It may seem to save money, but because of the lack of usability, I am out almost $300. read more

Dealing with Trenitalia can be a downright frustrating, awful, horrid experience. Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy which was created in the year 2000 following a European Union directive deregulation of rail transport. Though intended for privatization, Trenitalia is actually owned by the Italian Government and like anything operated by the Italian government really shows itself as such with long lines, horrible customer service, delays and bureaucratic mismanagement. They operate regional, long distance and high-speed rail service. The actual long distance and high-speed trains are new and rather nice but a lot of the regional trains are over 40 years old, a real mess, generally with the appearance of rolling eye sores on tracks. The trains of Italy do not run on time, in fact never have even during the time of Mussolini, with frequent delays and station track changes that frequently take place with little if any warning. The customer service clerks are typical of Italian government employees, inept, lackadaisical and generally taking their good old time about everything they do. You can stand in line forever, then when you think you might be next, the customer service clerk may just get up and leave for his lunch or coffee break without anyone else taking over, just leaving you standing there. Also, when you may think you have finally obtained you travel ticket, the nightmare isn't over because the ticket he has just sold you isn't a valid ticket. You then have to go to find one of their machines in order to validate the ticket yourself before you board. Only in Italy have I had clerks selling me tickets which are basically invalid and requiring further processing and time consuming delays. read more

Took these trains across Italy in 10 days and it was an amazing although initially confusing experience. Foreign travelers to Los Angeles, you're now getting lots of help and hugs from me, that is unless you want to be an actor, then you must realize early that it's a cut-throat world and hugs won't be doing you any favors. First of all, the ticket prices for the fast trains do not change and you probably would rather spend an extra 20 bucks to be in a new city in 2 hours rather than five so I always bought at the station. Also, there is a fast train to most regions every hour or every 30 minutes. 2nd class tickets are very comfortable and average 30-40 euro from city to city. What was initially very confusing was that they announce the platforms about ten minutes before the train departs, so you have to watch the screens along with the crowds that have gathered in front of these. Finally, your destination may not show up as the main destination so you have to match it to the train number or time for departure and then watch to make sure your destination scrolls past. Sounds complicated but it's actually not after the first try. You can buy from a ticket station but they charge extra so it's better to do it from an electronic pay station and just select your language. Once the ticket comes out it will tell the car number (carrozza) and seat in that car (posto) but again no platform because that appears on the screen and you then run for your platform. Many have cafes and all have bathrooms. If doors close press the button and they will again open, they are all set on timers, even the doors to enter the train. Would use again without hesitation and really wish we had a traincali. read more

This is for Trenitalia, but specifically the high speed Alta Velocità that runs from Rome to Firenze. I've been on a lot of trains throughout the world - South America, Russia, Asia, and much of Europe and I can say this is the finest coach I have ever been on. The run from Rome to Florence (85 minutes) is too short. With the scenery outside and the roomy plush seating with plenty of luggage storage inside, I wish the trip were longer. Did I mention that the seats are upholstered with the finest - might even be Corinthian ;) - leather? At €63 for business class one-way, this is an incredible travel value. In doubt I will ever fly into Florence again and will choose instead to fly to Rome and take this train from there. Granted you have to take a not-so-great train (the Leonardo da Vinci Express) from the airport to the Termini (train station in Rome) for €14 and then deal with the station there. Even so, I'll still do it. One factor in this decision is the Florence airport which is archaic. And I had a terrible experience there once with both British Air (idiots) and Florence Airport security (pricks) who would not let me take a graphite camera tripod as a carry on. British Air made me check it for €100 and then wouldn't reimburse me even after I contacted their CEO and most of their executive staff via email. But, that's another story I tell as many people as I can. read more

This appears to be the main Trenitalia listing. There are a lot of listings for specific stations, but those are too specific. Trenitalia seems to be the updated name for Ferrovie dello Stato (F.S.), or "Railways of the Nation." Italy is lucky to have such a train system. What? Italian trains are better than American trains? Yes. The spine of the boot has the high-speed trains. They used to be called the Eurostars. Now, they are often called Frecciargento (Silver Arrow) or Frecciarossa (Red Arrow), though I don't know what this entails, except that they can zoom at up to about 175 mph. Services toward the top of the boot have gotten way faster: Florence to Milan in a little over 2 hours, Florence to Venice in a little over 2 hours, and Rome to Florence in about 1.5 hours. (One time, I looked at my watch and it made the trek in 1:34, coming in ahead of schedule). The premium trains are not cheap, though. The positive aspects are the fast trains, the improved transit times, the decent schedule times, trains to remote locations, and the entertainment on board - not a movie or music, but the passengers themselves. The negative aspects are the secondary and tertiary routes (treni regionale) which tend to have more mechanical issues and delays, stations with one person or just an automated kiosk, occasional rudeness because it's hard to fire an Italian worker in a bureaucracy, and elimination of the sleeper trains from up in the mainland down to Sicily, or vice-versa. The "funniest" line is Florence to Venice - unlike Rome to Florence or Florence to Milan, which tend to used by businesspeople, this is a tourist train if there ever was one. You will have an American sitting next to an Australian sitting next to an Indian (shit, I meant South Asian) sitting next to a Canadian sitting next to a Brit sitting next to a Japanese sitting next to a Tunisian. The locals are outnumbered in a big way. It is hilarious and watching the theatrics makes the 2 hour ride feel like 1 hour. Part and parcel of a trip to Italy is experiencing Trenitalia. read more

Some trains are older than others, but the newer ones have really cool screens that tell you how fast you're traveling and helpful things like if someone is in the bathroom or not. On one of the older trains it had the windows that you can open. While air conditioning may not be in the train, the open window was really nice from usually stuffy trains. The trains were on-time and the stations were easy to navigate. On some of the older trains it doesn't have any signage or PA system to tell you what stop is next or what stop you're at, so you have to pay attention. read more
