Update - CSE apologized and refunded most of the cost. Very possible this was a one time mistake

But on Trip Number Six, last week, I discovered an even EASIER mode of transit. You guessed it! Airport Shuttle Express was recommended to me -- er, rather forced upon me -- as I stood at the kiosk in the train station at the airport, trying to buy a train ticket into town. Although I hate being pressured into buying something by a fast-talking know-it-all, I bent to the will of the lady at the kiosk and agreed to buy a ticket for the shuttle instead of the train. And you know what? It worked fabulously. So much so that my hubby and I reserved seats for our return journey too. On the inbound ride we shared the van with two other couples, thus stopped at two hotels before ours, yet still made it there in the 40 min. estimated by hard-sell kiosk-lady. What's more, we passed some of the best scenery imaginable: we drove by the Pyramid, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, down the Corso, past Termini (waving to those poor folks taking the train), and near the Spanish Steps. The driver himself was extremely courteous and even pointed out some of the major monuments as we careened (safely of course) around -- but he didn't chat us up or try to engage us in conversation, which I appreciate after a long flight. When it came time to leave the Eternal City and we had scheduled our shuttle pick-up, the same gentleman was at our hotel waiting for us, calmly munching a saltine, fifteen minutes before our official pick-up time. Beyond punctual! Bottom line: At 40 min. door-to-door (!) and 15€ apiece (hardly more than the express train), not to mention the huge convenience of not having to lug baggage on/off trains and across the massive Termini station (you know how far the airport train parks from the station exit!), there's no question: Airport Shuttle Express is my new ride into Rome.

We booked this shuttle online from the U.S. It seemed like a good deal and what could go wrong?…read moreThey have been around since 1999. They should have their procedures down by now, right? After. We paid online, they sent us an email with instructions. It said, our driver would meet us outside customs. He would be holding a sign with our name on it. If we had trouble finding him, we could go to their desk in Terminal B. We arrived in Leonardo Da Vinci airport at Terminal 3. There were plenty of people outside with signs. Just no one with our name. So we went looking for Terminal B. Slight problem. There is no Terminal B. Only terminals 1,2 or 3. So we went to Terminal 2. No one there. So, we called them. They were back in Terminal 3. Their desk had another name on it ???? The lady crossed our name off the list and said take a seat over there. We will be leaving in a few minutes. Well a few minutes turned into an hour. Our driver was not even there. They only called him after enough people showed up to fill up the van. Then we had to walk a good ten minutes with our luggage to where the van was parked. So, we did not get into Rome until three hours after we cleared customs. We had already paid for the return trip. So, we called then the day before to make sure that they would be on time for our departure. The driver showed up ten minutes late. Then when we got in the van, the engine would not start. It took four tries to get the engine going. Talk about nerve racking. I recommend anyone take the train into town.

She was also very thorough and accommodating. We even watched her swoop up an injured bird in her hands to rescue it from getting trampled by tourists. Overall, an unforgettable day! Later the same day we did a Coliseum and Ancient City tour with Gabriella, who gave the same awesome informative type tour, and did it with a fab attitude in the humid heat. Overall, I would say this is a great company!

I booked a Colosseum guided tour through LivTours for my family during a long planned trip to Rome,…read moremeant to celebrate my son's graduation from Lehigh University and my daughter's high school graduation. Instead of a memory to celebrate, we left with one none of us will forget for the wrong reasons. LivTours guides do not give guests individual paper tickets. The guide holds all admission on an electronic ticket and hands each guest a small sticker as the only proof of entry. On an extremely hot day, my sticker came loose. Our guide walked ahead with two other guests to the bookshop and, by her own account, only glanced back and saw our group heading toward the exit. She never confirmed we actually made it out and never checked that each of us still had proof of admission. When I reached the exit checkpoint, staff asked for my ticket. I had none, because LivTours never gave me one. I was told it was illegal to be in that area without a valid ticket, pulled aside, and questioned. The police were called. I stood there while my wife and children watched and had to step in to try to help me. My wife eventually pulled up our purchase receipt on her phone, and that is the only reason I was allowed to leave. LivTours admitted in writing that the guide saw our group heading toward the exit and left without confirming we made it out. She did not secure our exit. She did not check that everyone in the group actually cleared the checkpoint before she walked off with two other guests to the bookshop. Making sure a group actually exits a controlled site, not just watching them walk in that general direction, is a basic responsibility of a tour guide, especially one holding the only ticket that gives that group the right to be there in the first place. As an African American man in a foreign country, being publicly stopped, questioned, and detained by police in front of my family was humiliating in a way that is hard to put into words. This was supposed to be a trip celebrating my children's accomplishments. Instead they watched their father get pulled aside like a criminal because a tour guide walked away without making sure we had what we needed to leave. A LivTours representative called me shortly after and told me directly that a refund would be issued. Weeks later, after I put the complaint in writing, LivTours reversed course completely. They now claim the tour was "completed as planned" and that the incident was outside their control. Their own emails contradict that. They admit their guide saw us walking toward the exit and left without confirming we got out safely. They admit they do not provide physical tickets to guests. Those two facts together are exactly why this happened, and it happened because of how LivTours operates, not because of anything my family did. I would not recommend LivTours for any tour requiring facility exit past a checkpoint. Ask directly whether you will receive an individual physical ticket before you book, and get it in writing.
