But on Trip Number Six, last week, I discovered an even EASIER mode of transit. You guessed it! Airport Shuttle Express was recommended to me -- er, rather forced upon me -- as I stood at the kiosk in the train station at the airport, trying to buy a train ticket into town. Although I hate being pressured into buying something by a fast-talking know-it-all, I bent to the will of the lady at the kiosk and agreed to buy a ticket for the shuttle instead of the train. And you know what? It worked fabulously. So much so that my hubby and I reserved seats for our return journey too. On the inbound ride we shared the van with two other couples, thus stopped at two hotels before ours, yet still made it there in the 40 min. estimated by hard-sell kiosk-lady. What's more, we passed some of the best scenery imaginable: we drove by the Pyramid, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, down the Corso, past Termini (waving to those poor folks taking the train), and near the Spanish Steps. The driver himself was extremely courteous and even pointed out some of the major monuments as we careened (safely of course) around -- but he didn't chat us up or try to engage us in conversation, which I appreciate after a long flight. When it came time to leave the Eternal City and we had scheduled our shuttle pick-up, the same gentleman was at our hotel waiting for us, calmly munching a saltine, fifteen minutes before our official pick-up time. Beyond punctual! Bottom line: At 40 min. door-to-door (!) and 15€ apiece (hardly more than the express train), not to mention the huge convenience of not having to lug baggage on/off trains and across the massive Termini station (you know how far the airport train parks from the station exit!), there's no question: Airport Shuttle Express is my new ride into Rome.

Avis - Alfa Romeo Stelvio Rental - had to pay for upgrade despite booking luxury class to avoid being downgraded

It was off season so 10 days rental at a price you couldn't beat in the United States only to be doubled by taking on the damage and liability insurance waiver costs. But I must say it was worth it we didn't put a Dent in that car or a scratch or a buff but having driven around the South of Italy for 10 days I could tell you we easily could have taken off a mirror or 2 or a bumper. When we returned the car it was very early in the morning before anything was open and they assured us that a security guard would let us in except the car and lock it up so there would be no liability on our behalf. And sure enough at 2:00 in the morning at the airport for returns there was a gentleman who came to the gate almost immediately after we blew the horn let us in showed us where to park and made sure that everything was in good order before letting us into the airport common area. Unlike others who have posted some negative reviews I have yet to receive any tickets or violations but sure enough I was speeding a couple times on the highway so I may get a fine or 2 but that is clearly my fault and not the rental company. Thank you for the upgrade and see you next year.

AVÍOD THIS PLACE AT ALL COST…read more I should have done my homework and read the complaints of this company before I booked. There's a common theme here of being charged for damages that never happened. I prepaid a reservation for a van for the week I was in Italy. First van was given to me all beat up literally major damage on all parts of the vehicle. The AC also didn't work. After 2 days we had to change the vehicle because the heat was so bad. We got another vehicle same make model and color. Fast forward to when I returned the vehicle. No receipt at car return which should have be a sign something of wrong. I took my flight home only to land and see I have a pending charge of over $2000 USD ! Still not receipt sent to my email. I had to hunt the the receipt and saw o was charged a MISC CHARGE for $1770 Euros. That's it not explanation to what MISD charge is. I call AVIS and they tell me since it's an international they can't help me and all the can do is create a case for me and someone will respond within 60 days. There's no phone number to call and I just have to wait. I always go with big companies for this exact reason because if something does wrong I feel at ease that I can speak to someone to fix the issue but this time I left with a $2,000 bill and a someone will get back to you in 60 days. I still don't know what the charge is for, I have called and emailed Avis multiple times to no avail, my next step is to report this as an authorized charge and file complaints through the proper channels in the EU.
