Ok buckle up, I have so many things to say about our amazing experience working with Steve, as first time remodelers (and homebuyers!). Steve did my parents' kitchen, so I was already familiar with the quality results of his design and project management, and it was an easy choice to enlist him to help us with a total kitchen gut and remodel. I can't recommend Steve more - he is thoughtful down to every tiny detail, proposing clever and functional design choices that were really tailored to our style and how we live while staying within our budget. I think it's a rare thing for construction to end on schedule and within budget, so I'm even more impressed with Steve after our own experience with him. He was in constant communication with us and his coordination of each phase of the remodel was seamless. Some highlights from working with Steve: - His thorough initial inspection pointing out items that the home inspector missed. - How he listened to our kitchen goals, asked detailed questions to fine tune them and then developed a project scope that balanced what we wanted with the amount we were comfortable investing. - The 3D renderings created that really allowed us to visualize the new space and the detailed CAD plans that ensure the technicians had clear instructions on how to build it. - The feedback and insight provided to both products and services he assisted with, as well as choices we were making separately from the kitchen remodel, such as our flooring for the entire first floor. We originally thought we wanted wood-style tile, but Steve recommended LVP, which turned out to be not only an economically good choice, but beautiful and well-suited to our low-maintenance lifestyle. - His accessibility and involvement throughout the whole process ensuring that no details were compromised. I mean he is seriously detail-oriented! He brought so many things to our attention that I never would have noticed or thought about before, but his care and attention to them resulted in a high-end, custom look, even with our conservative budget. Honestly, I am so thankful we decided to leave it to the professionals for this remodel. This is the first remodel we've done, in the first house that we've purchased, and the experience was overall so positive. I feel the value we received working with Steve and the labor providers he partners with was so incredibly worth it, and I wouldn't change a single thing.

rendering of a kitchen and dining room

My husband and I completed a major kitchen renovation which was long in the making with the help of Steve Hellman. Our old kitchen was dark, poorly planned and had plumbing issues. A load bearing wall divided it from the adjacent TV room. We always wanted the renovation, but never found anyone with the vision to do transform it to match the rest of home. Only when we met Steve Hellman did I feel we were truly listened to and understood. He showed the passion, knowledge and attention to detail that we needed to feel confident to proceed with the project. We briefly considered acting as our own contractor as I did with my three bathrooms. But I know how hard it is to locate the best tradespeople, and frankly this was WAY over our head. I couldn't even visualize a design that would work for us. Steve's design was extremely detailed and thoughtful. We followed it with very minimal alterations. Steve brought out his industry contacts to our home to plan out the engineering, electrical, plumbing and other elements needed to make the design a reality. We now sit in a gorgeous open space. We now have open views from the TV room we didn't know we had. We have a beautiful and functional space with all of the elements we dreamed of, and more. We didn't have to worry about things along the way (other than living without our kitchen!) and the job was done ON TIME. Steve Hellman personally stayed involved throughout the entire process. He helped to ensure that the vision did not get lost or modified. With a complex job like ours, simpler solutions pop up frequently, but Steve's attention to detail and his precise vision worked to give us a perfect outcome. I really appreciate his patience and dedication. At moments in a big project like ours, we were willing to skip some details to save time. Thank heavens Steve was there to remind us why he designed his very specific details. I am grateful that we have a custom job, and that the team was willing to work to give us maximum adjustability-- in some of the cabinets, for example, instead of cutting corners. Our job was not too cheap to be believable. It was competitive and certainly cheaper that some of the big design companies in the market. When we talk with other people who have done big projects like this, we are so grateful we had Steve to guide us! We were in good hands, and had as pleasant an experience as a family can have with a project of this magnitude. We got all that we expected. We were able to move back into our beautiful new space on schedule. It is amazing that the new space looks like it has always been like this! The design integrates perfectly into the rest of the house. We recommend using Steve Hellman if he's not too booked!

For a month now I've been happily using my new kitchen that Steve Hellman designed for us. And it is a dream! Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but it's exceptionally functional as well. The many features Steve incorporated allows me to feel completely organized. I appreciate that Steve was able to design our dream kitchen and stay within budget. His attention to detail ensured the project went smoothly and every piece was thoroughly thought out. He provided a timeline for the build and install, and everything was right on time. The end result shows his masterful work. Steve was always available to us throughout the project design and build and he even offered suggestions and tips for renovations we were undertaking that were not part of the kitchen.

After

Our home had the original non-functioning 1958 kitchen. My husband and I knew the project would be a down to the studs kitchen remodel with reconfiguration so we waited years and years before taking the leap into the unknown. We learned from hearing our friends share their kitchen remodel experiences that the #1 regret is that used a "big box" store design and wished they had started with a better design. So, when we set out to do our kitchen, we were in search of someone that could design and maximize our space. Our starting point was to find a good design and when doing internet searches, we found Metic Design Build, Incorporated. Steve's reviews hit all the important "must have" items that we had learned from our friends, so we booked an appointment with Steve. From the first time we met with Steve, we could tell from his questions and ideas that he would be the one to design and maximize the space within our budget. When Steve presented the design of our new kitchen, we couldn't believe that a kitchen like that was even possible. We were so impressed with Steve's design, we knew that we wanted Metic Design Build, Inc. to manage the construction portion as well. We can't over emphasize how Steve's project oversight ensured every aspect of the work was done precisely how he had spelled it out in his plans. Some highlights of using Steve as the project manager: 1) his experience with the construction process ensured no unexpected delays (for example all items were ordered and delivered on time for the next phase of the project); 2) he found the exact appliance models needed and then helped to get a lower price on them; 3) he ensured every piece of hardware lined up perfectly; 4) he carefully planned the tile resulting in even cuts and outlets perfectly centered; and 5) he was able to give us our beautiful new kitchen within budget. Steve's construction team is so professional as well. We can't say enough good things about Steve, his team, and our beautiful new kitchen! We recommend Steve so much so that we are asking him to do our bathrooms next!

Being so far away we needed someone to trust in our Design build project. The work was on time, with what's up work meetings and excellent communications with my associates as the project proceeded. Best of all when there were problems Shelly helped fix everything including a day long final punch list inspection where every single detail was taken care of perfectly to my exacting satisfaction. Very impressive and one more example of Shelley's client service. Pictures of their work on this project are available. Like any major…read moreproject, we started by reaching out to a couple of vendors to get quotes, that's where we met Alon, the project manager for Lumina Builders. What immediately stood out to us was that he had ideas and solutions to address our pain points and make enhancements, we wouldn't have ever considered, and didn't just wait for us to tell him how we wanted things. He created a vision for us in that first quote visit. The other contractor we spoke to didn't provide any ideas just asked us how we wanted it. It was a very easy decision to go with Alon and Lumina Builders. Our project was estimated to take 2-3 months and ultimately took two and a half months to complete. We designed a brand new kitchen, addressing all of our concerns and adding a few recommendations from Alon to streamline some areas. They ripped everything out aside from the flooring and walls. We got brand new custom cabinets, custom lighting, and new countertops. Our fridge was moved to a new, more accessible area. Our sink was shifted down to align with the stove for continuity sake (never realized how much I hated it being in a corner previously). We had a new little cabinet built in our little breakfast nook area and we had an appliance garage built to house everything that took up counter space. Everything is so much brighter and more open and, even though we know the demensions are roughly the same, it feels so much wider. We are ecstatic with how everything came out. Alon is a genius. He was responsive to us throughout the project, checking in weekly to see how things were going, giving us peace of mind throughout this process, as first time remodelers. We were indecisive about the primary cabinet color (I was very worried we'd be stuck with something we didn't really like) but he worked with the cabinet makes to give us several samples to choose from. He was very patient with us. We LOVE how everything turned out! We'll definitely be using Lumina Builders for all of our future projects.

We went with Forever Builders, who also did some demo for us when we first moved in. Among other things, we 1) stripped and replaced the floor, 2) demoed the built-in tub and replaced it with a soaking tub, 3) replaced the vanity countertops, 4) installed a chandelier and sconces, and 5) installed a custom shower door. Steve was our project manager for the entire project, which took 3-4 weeks. We are so incredibly pleased with the result, and just as happy with the service and professionalism we received from Steve and his team. Steve managed every aspect of this complex project flawlessly, stopped by frequently to check progress and QC each phase of work, and was consistently responsive and professional. He took my calls on nights and weekends, and I always felt taken care of and valued as an important customer--such a rare occurrence these days. The craftsmanship was flawless too. I am a detail-oriented person and tend to demand perfection, and Forever Builders exceeded my expectations. As a bonus, they also installed a floating vanity for me in a secondary bathroom, as a complimentary part of the project. Since then, I have also asked Steve and Forever Builders to patch up a huge portion of ceiling drywall at my mom's house that was screwed up by another company, and they did an amazing job with that as well. You will not find a more consistently exceptional company. I'm a customer for life.

Based on that storyline, they're refusing to take responsibility for the flooring damage. The windows were installed without permits. I brought in four independent inspections, including three licensed general contractors and one home inspector. All confirmed active water intrusion and pointed to the window installation as the likely source. Despite that, Forever Builders continues to deny, redirect, and avoid addressing the actual installation. The floors never had water intrusion before the remodel. The problem started after their work. Instead of owning it and fixing it, they've chosen to argue technicalities and wait for CSLB to force the issue. For a company that promotes itself as 5-star, this has been anything but. When serious defects surface, there's no urgency, no accountability, and no effort to stand behind the work. Just excuses. That is not 5-star service. That is not what integrity looks like.

Review Update (2026)…read more I am updating my original 5-star review from a few years ago. At the time, we were very happy with our kitchen remodel and the overall experience working with Creative Design & Build. The project turned out beautifully, which is why I originally left such a positive review. Over the years, however, I noticed that one section of the flooring felt slightly soft when walking on it. At first, it did not seem serious, so we continued to live with it. Recently, the problem became worse and a section of the floor began to noticeably sink when stepped on and eventually a few edges of the flooring broke. At that point, I became concerned that it could become a safety issue. Because we still had plenty of spare flooring boards left over from the project, I attempted to replace the affected board myself. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the new board to fit correctly due to the locking system, and I could not restore the original board either. I then contacted Creative Design & Build for assistance. One reason I reached out was because our original project manager, Oded, had told us that if we ever had any issues, we should contact the company. I left a voicemail and later received a return call from a staff member. After I explained the situation, she said she would check with management and get back to me. A few days later, I received a text message stating that the warranty had expired and that no repairs would be covered. This was disappointing because I had never been informed that there was a four-year warranty period, nor was I able to find any reference to such a limitation in our contract. When I asked for details regarding the warranty and whether they could recommend someone to repair the issue, I did not receive any further response. There were two other issues relating to electrical and plumbing, however we decided to live with that until we had a major problem we needed fixing. I still appreciate the work that was done on our remodel years ago, and our kitchen remains a space we enjoy. However, I have been disappointed by the lack of follow-up and support when a problem arose. My advice to future customers is to make sure all warranty terms, coverage details, and expiration dates are clearly documented and understood before signing a contract.
