When the chef at an Indian restaurant is Hispanic, you question your decision to drop in. Five of us were the only lunch customers on a Tuesday. The owner Vikram was there. We all ordered from the main menu family style as the lunch specials are very limited.. The food was overly oily. The naans were fresh and delicious. We are all Indians and were hoping for a good Indian restaurant in WC but this left us wanting. There are better choices in Concord, Lafayette and Orinda. Vikram shared that they have closed their Orinda restaurant Anya's Kitchen and it is now a Bangladeshi restaurant. Hopefully things get better but our experience wasn't great. Will give it another try. Note: The owner reached out and reminded me that we did not complain when he asked us how everything was. He is right, we were too polite. Absolutely delicious, clean, comfortable and charming. I stopped by for their lunch special. I ordered a chicken saag bowl which came with basmati rice and a fresh cucumber, onion, and radish salad, and freshly baked naan. I also ordered the paneer pakora on the side. It came with green and mango chutney. I asked for raita, which was the perfect compliment for the chicken saag. I asked for mild spice, it had the perfect kick, flavor was not sacrificed. Wait staff was very attentive too. Service was fast, polite, and welcoming. I believe the chef himself gave me the bill and cleared my table while his staff took a break. If you are Celiac/ Gluten Free, see my note at the end. The food here was good and we would return, but we won't bring our gluten free family member. Service was very friendly, though our first waiter didn't understand much English. I asked about dairy content in a few dishes and had 2 different answers from her about the same dish--yes dairy, no dairy. So I ended up picking the item described as having coconut milk because usually such dishes don't, but it didn't inspire confidence. We ordered 3 items and paratha and my husband asked the waiter if she thought that was enough for 3 of us, "oh no" and shook her head. We ordered one more dish. We had leftovers. So, again, I think there is a language issue. About the gluten free claim: This restaurant is not suitable for celiac and others who need to be truly gluten free. At the end of our meal, another waiter came over to ask if everything was ok. Since here English was more fluent I asked her about the items labeled gluten free on the menu. She said the naan is made in the tandoori oven, and also any tandoori dishes (like tandoori chicken) are also made in the oven. I said this is not truly gluten free. The chef came out--very friendly and eager to reassure me. He showed me what the naan dough looks like (no loose flour on the outside) and that it sticks to the side of the tandoori oven and "nothing can drop" while the tandoori chicken is put at the bottom. This is nice and all, but those with actual celiac who need gluten free will become sick from this. 1/350 of a particle--which can be in the air of the baking oven--is enough to hurt someone with celiac. I encourage the restaurant to adjust their gf claims. You otherwise are doing a great job. read more

This is the most authentic food, such good spice, quality and service! We had coconut chicken curry, chicken biryani, naan and their chai! Even my Punjabi husband who obviously grew up on home cooked Indian food said it's the best in the bay! And the service is outstanding! New, clean, low lights, beautiful decor. Definitely go! This review is long overdue. I've gotten takeout from methi five or six times and dined in three times now. The value of the lunch menu is really nice especially for the area. I'm actually glad it's just a little bit away from the main downtown area. It feels more like a neighborhood haunt than a place for a special occasion which encourages multiple visits and always makes it seem like it's always a viable option for choosing where to eat. I really wish I could get into nitty gritty details about the flavors of all the different dishes but truthfully I've tried too many over too long a span to be specific. I guess I just recommend going outside your comfort zone a little. Go one spice level higher than you normally would, get a dish you're not sure you can pronounce correctly, and please, whatever you do, order too much food. The naan is a particularly nice item I'd like to shout out. Soft and chewy and perfect for scooping up your curry with. The pickled veggie salad is pretty good too. To be fair, I've almost always ordered from the veggie side of the menu so I can't comment on how their chicken is but I assure you that every veggie entree is delectable. Not one to leave reviews usually but in this case I think it's warranted. Ordered take out for me and my vegetarian partner. We Both got the paneer tikka masala. First off, the oil from the "sauce" was just sitting on top. Weird I thought, but we went ahead and tried it anyways. One word: Gross! Tried to mix it and pour some of it out but it didn't make it any better. Literally tasted like I was dipping my naan into a giant tub of olive oil. My partner then bit into her "paneer" and we found out very quickly that it was actually chicken. This place lacks flavor, can't follow directions, and isn't very authentic. Your best bet is to go a mile away and go to Sargam Indian Cuisine which is the best Indian food in Walnut Creek or heck even go to Trader Joe's across the street and get their frozen Indian food. Very good food. I think this is a keeper. In the location next to the Habit, it used to be Baja Fresh, and after that Kokolo. I hope Methi thrives, as I prefer it to a lot of the choices in Walnut Creek. Our favorite is Swad in Lafayette (other than going to Berkeley) but sometimes the service is spotty in that particular restaurant. I like the decor, it's a small restaurant. They kept it simple. This is by far the strangest Indian food I have ever experienced. The Tandoori Chicken "Kebab" was chicken cubes mixed in with a broccoli and zucchini stir fry in a bowl... It's like someone stir fried some chicken and threw in a bunch of frozen vegetables. The Chicken Khorma didn't taste or look like any Khorma I've had before, even the color was off. The Veggie samosas were too dry and the pastry shell too thick and over cooked. The salted Lassi had a very odd taste and was "off". Seems to me that the food was adjusted for "local" tastes rather than going for any shred of authenticity. Service was weird as well. Kept asking how spicy we wanted the Tandoori chicken which was a surprise and threw me off. Also, while we were clearly still eating and the server asked of if we were done and needed boxes. When I said we are still working on it, the server came back 10 minutes later and asked the same. I recently went to Methi with my family. The food, service, and decor was excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes, including lamb korma, chicken tikka masala, goat curry, and a couple appetizers and veggie curry. The food was really good. The chicken tikka masala in particular...its a dish that's always a crowd favorite, but this one was super good. It was less tomato-y and less red than some other places, and didn't have that "Campbell soup" flavor I sometimes get. The chicken was white meat, but super moist. Most dishes were ordered "Medium" heat, and it was on the less spicy side of medium. We got garlic naan and paneer naan, and it was really soft and fluffy. They offer a couple unique dishes I don't see often, like pani puri, which was fun to try. Prices are a few dollars more than casual Indian restaurants, but its Walnut Creek, and the quality of the food was worth it. Service was friendly and attentive. The food came out very quick too. They have an open kitchen so you can see your food is made fresh. Decor inside is really nice too. This is a good place to take a date or family gathering, if you want some place a little nicer. We were there on Monday 7pm, and the place was roughly 1/2 full. Big parking lot right outside. I'd put this in my top 3 Indian restaurants in the area (the other 2 being Naan N Curry, and Masala House). read more
