It's always fun to try new things, and I was excited to stumble across The Eagle when looking for a…read moreplace to start a night on the town. Parking in Charlotte is classically bad, especially for those from out of town who don't know the secrets. I was very happy to find ample covered parking available directly attached to this restaurant. We arrived around 5:30pm and it was nearly empty, so we had our choice of seating. There are bar, booth, table, and outdoor options, and we opted for a booth. They were spacious and comfortable. Drink and appetizer orders were taken quickly - My party had a Blackberry Lemonade, a Peach Jalapeño Margarita, and a draft beer. All were good and no complaints there. Our appetizer was the spicy chicken dip, which is served with tortilla chips. It was a large portion and very tasty, definitely recommend! From there, service started getting notably slow, and there was a long wait before we saw anyone again to place entrée orders or refills on drinks. The server was friendly, but seemed pre-occupied and kept going back to a laptop at the bar. I suspect some personal matter had him distracted (and it happens to all of us!) but I wish he would have been able to step away to a private space and had someone else cover for him for a bit. For entrees, we got: - The southern chopped salad (good flavor, but very heavy on the dressing and I would ask for that on the side next time. Also, go with the half portion - The server encouraged the full portion and it was HUGE.) - The Fried Chicken Sandwich (a very filling portion and good flavors, albeit a bit messy. I asked for added jalapeños which never came.) - The Carolina Braised Pork Sandwich (again, a huge portion and good flavor, although the meat was very juicy and it was messy to eat. We also asked for jalapeños here and never saw them.) - Sides were Mac & Cheese (delicious!) and collard greens (Decent, but they could have used some vinegar and we were told there was none available.) Overall, the quality and portions of food are very good. I appreciate a place in a large city that has available parking. The menu is not very big, but there is enough to satisfy all tastes. Service has room for improvement, but was overall decent. I could certainly see coming back for another try in the future.

The salads were pretty good but what threw me was I didn't order black beans - I ordered bean salad. Don't get me wrong. I think the black beans were perfectly seasoned for me, and they arrived hot, hate them with the seasoned rice (perfect complement). But I was expecting a cold bean salad. Smoked pasta salad was pretty good I honestly liked the flavor believe it or not and texture was good. Same with the potato salad, I enjoyed the cubed potato salad. I liked the coleslaw. It was to my texture and taste. For me? The pork belly tacos were "eh"- agreed that it absolutely could be a personal preference - which? Makes sense since I ordered it, I'm eating it lol! Spicy, very sweet and portion was OK. I think? Next time I would like to try something else - interested to hear what anyone else thinks of the pork belly tacos. Seasoned rice was good. I purposely got it because I wanted it to go with the beans. Last but at least, was the pork, I wish they had drained it and that it wasn't so wet (water/oil)? But? I did enjoy it. Good flavor, tender, mild enough when I drained it, I made sandwiches with my own dressing, etc. Next time I would like to try their chicken and see if that is tender and flavorful, but I like that everything was a good even flavor and seasoned perfectly other than the pork belly for me.

Like so many long-time Charlotte favorites, The Roasting Company isn't much to look at. It's been…read morein the same spot on Montford since I moved here decades ago and the owners haven't bothered updating the inside. It's clean but plain, with some old tables and chairs inside and on the sparse patio. But you aren't paying for ambiance. For that, go elsewhere. But if you want hearty food at a good price, The Roasting Company is your place. My favorite forever was either the chicken jaco or the chicken and queso, both served on rice that I then mix with a healthy side of steamed spinach. Then I discovered the Thursday chicken and dumplings, which is what I had today and why I am finally letting you all in on where to get excellent chicken and dumplings if Dish (off Central) is too far away. Like everything we've ordered at Roasting Company, the serving is generous and stick-to-your-ribs delicious. Don't let the size fool you, if you're going for takeout; that 16oz container is filled to the brim with a thick mix of tender shredded chicken, dumpling noodles and a dense, flavorful sauce. Mind you, all the chicken and sides I've tried there are good to excellent (except I didn't really care for the smoked cheese and pasta salad). My husband swore by the chicharrons and the chips and queso or guacamole are solid sides. So if you happen by there after the chicken and dumplings has sold out - which happens pretty much every Thursday - or it's another day of the week, you can't miss with their regular menu or their other specials. So many of our older Charlotte favorites have gone out of business or the owners retired. Heed my advice and try The Roasting Company. Long may it serve us delicious food!

It has that warm, lively feel that makes you want to hang out and enjoy your time instead of rushing through the meal. We did a wine flight to start, which was a fun way to try a few different pours, and everything paired really well with dinner. The highlight for me was the whole roasted fish. Crispy on the outside, super tender inside, and really clean, fresh flavor. Simple but done really well. Service was on point too -- friendly, attentive, and helpful without hovering. Definitely a spot I'd come back to and one I'd recommend if you're in Charlotte and want a solid dinner with great drinks and atmosphere.

They even still have the 120 year old pews! If you ask your server, you are likely to hear the entire story of the place. It's pretty amazing. They recently received a Michelin recommendation and it's totally deserved. It's a buffet, but most of the hot food is actually served by a person which is something that I particularly appreciate. (I really don't like touching the handles of spoons that hundreds of people have touched.) Some of the stuff is self serve but not any of the hot dishes. Absolutely everything I tried was outstanding. Like everything. There are a few things that they consider "pass around" which means that they are brought over to you by a server at random intervals. For everything else, you just help yourself. I went with a friend of mine who has a deep appreciation for a southern food. He was absolutely amazed. Honestly, I can't think of a better place to have chosen to eat in a short time I had in Charlotte. I've attached a picture of the menu. I tried just about everything. I wasn't disappointed in a single thing, and I was completely wowed by many of them. The servers were wonderful. Very friendly and very willing to talk to us about the history and the food items that were there. Highest recommendation!

Unfortunately, the service this go round will prevent me from returning. One server was taking charge of the whole of the restaurant and she seemed VERY poorly educated on service practice, menu items, and generally was unable to communicate effectively with the others in the restaurant. While my Mahi main was very good, two out of three items in each course of the special menu were unavailable, which wasn't shared upon seating. I watched as the waitress made a mistake on our appetizer, fed another guest fish who has ordered chicken (and then didn't tell her until after she had begun eating) and completely forgot our table's included dessert. The chef was unable to accommodate any appetizers or desserts to accommodate a gluten free diet and the waitress was very unclear on the contents of the provided dishes. With few options, many unavailable items and some of the worst service I have had in years, I'd encourage the Asbury to find Beth a new role elsewhere and rethink their weekend procedures. We will not return.
