Went and saw Marguerite! This is the first person in 15+ years who sat down to educate me about my hair. She talked to me for like 15 min straight purely on my hair and it's health. Now, she kept it real and said things I already knew about my wearing weaves, wigs, etc. that stuff just destroyed my edges. Wish I had found her a long ass time ago and my hair would be in better shape now. I got a pixie cut! It's cute, but it's going to take getting used too since I have always worn wigs or weaves. Maybe it's because she isn't from LA, but I felt like she actually cared about my hair. People saw my edges and hair time and time again and kept letting me get them. If someone was more honest and said, "you need to give your hair a break." I wouldn't be this way now. Again, my choice to continue to get them, but I just feel if I had met Marguerite even just 5 years ago I would actually like my natural hair and it would be sooooooo healthy. My hair is giving me so much life!!!! Thanks so much Shelli! I've always loved my curly hair, but it is (was) really thick/coarse, and to be honest I didn't comb the middle section out often because it was too much to handle/too painful. That all CHANGED on Saturday when I got my hair texturized by Shelli at Mesch. I didn't even know what texturizing was until last week. In the past, I've cut my hair down to practically nothing, straightened it all the time to make things easier, gotten braids and twists to have a temporary break from dealing with the worst of it, and tried other things to make life easier. With this texturizer though, which maintained my natural curl pattern but loosened up the coarseness of my hair, I can comb through my hair with just my fingers! And yesterday I tried just using olive oil on my hair (instead of the variety of products to keep everything in place) and it worked! My hair was so soft...I'm in love. UNPROFESSIONAL: Spend your money elsewhere. 5 Reasons Why 1. First time I went, Marguerite showed up late and never apologized. Then she stained the back of my neck when coloring my hair and claimed not knowing how to remove the color from my skin. I had to call my old stylist in NY to find out how to remove it. 2. Second time I showed up, she was late again. She was so late that the other stylist asked the woman waiting for her if she was ok. 3. But this second time I went to Mesch, I booked with someone different - Toi - more professional and quick to tell you she's an indie contractor and doesn't directly work for the Salon. Still, no matter who you book with, the online booking situation is horrific with dates marked as available when they really are not. At least Toi sent an email confirmation. But she never clearly described the services I needed to check off, so she couldn't fix my hair when I needed adjustments because she "hadn't booked the time. " 4. When you call the shop to inquire and ask questions about services you need, you either A. Speak to someone and they take a message. But you'll never get a call back. Or B. You'll leave a message on voicemail and will never be called back. 5. When I mentioned to the stylist/owner, Margaurite, that she was so booked online despite it saying she isn't when she is, and how hard it was to get a callback even though I left a message (I threw in a joke to soften the criticism like, "You must be famous.")? Unprofessional AF. I first called with a simple question, "how much is a wash and cut for my 6 year old." I was quoted $30 and told who the appointment was with. Upon arrival, said person informed me that wasn't her rate and the cut/wash would be $55 dollars(the stylist did offer 20% off as a compromise to $45), which I found out 15 minutes after my appointment time. That's not my problem. I'm a pretty forgiving person and know mistakes and miscommunication between staff can happen. What annoys me is that when I wanted to discuss this with the owner Marguerite, I was intentionally ignored. She chewed on a salad at the front desk, continued to ignore me, and wouldn't make any eye contact. I had hoped it could be a learning moment for her/her staff and how not to miscommunicate to clientele. Instead, she didn't even bother to apologize and walked away to the back of the studio. Sad part is, I probably would have tipped close to $55 anyway. Had Marquerite been even the slightest bit respectful, I could easily have met them half way or paid the $45 compromise. What I wanted was an enjoyable experience for my 6 year old around women of color. Even after the mistake, a simple "Sorry," would have gone a long way. Instead my daughter witnessed unprofessionalism and disrespect. Instead our lesson for the day was not to patronize businesses that don't respect you or your time. I really THOUGHT I liked Mesch Salon and the online booking option is fantastic. However, if you book your appointment on the same day you have service and don't receive a confirmation, CALL THE SALON; they may have forgotten to refresh their screen on their computer. I was using a new stylist named Chantay every 8 to 9 days and she was fantastic. However, she's no longer working at this location. Just disappeared. I booked with another person but the good ones are very busy and may have double/triple bookings. I'm not good at being placed under the dryer to kill time (not that it happened to me) but if I see the person that I've scheduled an appointment with working on two different heads and neither are almost done as I walk in for an appointment, I'm one to reschedule. I have also seen Marguerite's work and she is great. Their products are nourishing and the place is clean. 98% of the stylists are professional. Price varies dependent on the Stylist experience and your selection from their online services options. I have had one bad experience Too Many with the woman that sits to the left in the front chair when you walk in the door. She has never done my hair but she is incredibly rude and unprofessional. Now I know why there is a high turnover rate with the people renting space/booths. I still feel like I should pay a stylist that works there for cancelling an appointment while I was there.. that woman's rudeness and thinking she knew a situation from her chair, chased me out of there. This salon is one of LA's best kept secrets. So I'm cracking up at the first person who reviewed Mesch. As previously mentioned, this salon specializes in African American hair care, which in and of itself is a very expensive service. So no, you're not going to get a $15 hair cut here. However, all are welcome and the clientele is diverse .... actors, doctors, students, white, black, Asian, Hispanic ... You don't have to be black or have nappy hair to get your hair done at this salon. The environment is fun and welcoming ... if nothing else you will walk out entertained and informed on whatever topic is being discussed in the salon on any given day. With that said, Marguerite has been my hairstylist since 2003. I've grown out my relaxer, cut my hair, dyed my hair, braided it up and wore a weave ... I've done it all ... and that's what I love about Marguerite ... she can do it all without any hesitation. I also love that Marguerite will make sure your hair is healthy above anything else. This salon saved me from a disaster, whether male or female this experience is quintessential for getting your hair done correctly, quickly, and durably through the changing weathers in California. I flew in from Texas after having my twists ruined in a salon @ Austin, Texas and needed to completely get it redone 24 hours before an event I needed to attend. I was able to get an appointment with Nadia almost instantly for the next morning. Once I arrived, Nadia first thoroughly washed my hair.. which I thought I had already done to a tee, but there is no replacing the massage and scalp cleansing she gave me. This was something I as a male hadn't even experienced in the hair studio I tried in Austin. While usually I'm readying myself for 3 - 4 hour sit down to get my hair completely twisted up, Nadia did it in less than two hours. I'm tender-headed and there was no pain at all. I write this review two weeks later, and my hair is still held together and there's no real frizz - even after being in 100-110 degree weather for a few days. This is almost unheard of for my hair texture. The women in the salon made me feel welcome, chopped it up with me for a bit, and gave me some helpful tips for navigating Los Angeles (this was my first time being in the city). I'll never forget the service I received here from Nadia, and I guarantee this will be my go-to spot if I'm ever needing to get my hair twisted perfectly. I was extremely disappointed with tis salon the owner was rude and very unproffesional I was eager to try them because of all the wonderful reveiws but i would have to give this place 0 stars. However I do like Shanise. But the owner I'll pass on she was very rude every time I went. Make sure you don't miss your appt she will charge you $45 fee but the catch is the policy isn't on the website or written down at the front desk. I missed my appt. once. So on my next visit, the owner waited until my hair wash being washed to mention I had a $45 cancellation fee. I mention I wasn't aware of it she stated it was on the site. When I got home I looked every where and no mention of any mis appt fees. I advised her as my hair was being shampooed by another stylist. I didn't have it to pay today. I got my hair done here for my birthday after reading the reviews. My first hint should have been that the person that answered the phone was so unprofessional I thought I had the wrong number. I asked a few times to make sure I had the right number. I was booked with Shanice Smith. I arrived at my appointment on time and sat for almost an HOUR. No one not once acknowledged me or explained to me why it was taking so long. I was coming right out of braids and was told to come straight out of braids and they would comb it out. The woman that washed and rinsed me seemed extremely upset that I showed up that way and I explained to her that I specifically called and asked if I should comb it out and was told to come as is. It wasn't until an hour later that I was told that there was a booking error which is why my appointment took much longer than it should have. Six hours to be exact for a hair weave. No apology and no discount. The weave was thin and poorly done. I called the next day and left a message. No one ever returned my call. It was an unprofessional experience. I will not be returning. I had my hair done by Toi after scheduling an appointment on her website. The scheduling process was straight forward and, although I thought it was strange that I couldn't make an appointment over the phone, I now like being able to schedule online whenever I want and being able to see all of the prices up front. I scheduled an appointment during the evening but there were still a few clients at the salon. I didn't have to wait very long at all before Toi got started on me. I wear my natural hair most of the time and went in to have it straghtend for a special event. I usually straighten my own hair, but since I have begun wearing it in its natural state it has become harder and harder to get it as straight as I want it. Toi did a really great job getting my hair silky straight. I was completely satisfied with her service and I will continue to schedule appointments with her in the future. Fallon Courtney was a miracle worker. I took my own braids out (silly me) and I didn't exactly do it gracefully. I broke off a lot of random hair. Marguerite is an angel who came to the rescue after a hack job at B. Perry International, where the stylist literally coerced me to cut off more than 4 inches of my mixed curly hair so that it would be impossible to be seen in public without a rescue! I called Marguerite on Sunday, which is a day most African American salons are not open and she happily worked me into her schedule immediately! Once I arrived she immediately assessed the situation, came up with a plan! She apologized for the reprehensible job of the previous salon and offered to even out my layers and even offered to give me a deal on the a color for my grays! By the time she was finished, my hair looked nothing like the uneven mess that it was when I arrived! I actually felt confident leaving the salon! She charged me a fair price for the wash, cut and style versus the ridiculous charge from B. Perry international! I am so thankful for her talent and generosity! Marguerite knows how to style and take care of any kind of hair! She is attentive, she listens to what you want and also giver suggestions based on her experience! I had some really bad luck in LA since moving from Northern Cali with hair salons/stylists not knowing how to deal with my long, curly hair. They would flat iron it but it wouldn't come out bone straight or because I had so much hair, they would need 3-4 hours and 3 women working on my head. Unnecessary. So I found this salon on Yelp and made an appointment to see Fallon. I told her I wanted a flatiron and a trim. She washed my hair with some great products and she was very easy to talk to. We had great conversation. When she blew my hair out, we discussed my trim. I gave her minimal instruction. I told her I wanted a trim and didn't want layers, but something that would keep my length and give my hair some pizzazz. She knew EXACTLY what I wanted. When she turned the chair around I was a completely different person. It was PERFECTION! This salon is the best in LA! I would recommend any and everyone to go.
