Dr. Chang and his staff are the sweetest people and deserve all the praise! I was having a hard time finding someone who would extract my bottom two wisdom teeth and connected to Dr. Tanzil via Opencare. She'd literally message me during all hours of the day and made sure that my concerns were addressed before referring me to Dr. Chang. Once I actually got there, Anita (If you're reading this, I'm so sorry if this isn't actually your name) readied me for my consultation and made me feel like family. Thank you so much for all of your assistance; I've never had such a pleasant time taking X-rays before. Dr. Chang performed my operation smoothly. He encouraged me throughout the process and went over the time limit just to make sure I was as comfortable as possible. Both he and Sandra, the lovely receptionist, called to check up on me following the operation which I wholly appreciate. Overall, I'd love to come here again even if it's just for a cleaning. Wonderful! My boyfriend and I started going here for a short time I had a a few cavity fillings with Dr. Tanzil and my boyfriend got a gum graft done with Dr. Chang. When Dr. Tanzil diagnosed the X-rays, she said I had 2 cavities.  After sharing the X-rays with my stepfather (who runs a practice out of state), both he and his partner both looked and said they found no evidence of cavities.   After I went to his practice for a cleaning, their hygienist also said she saw no evidence of cavities. Per their thoughts, it was mentioned that a lot of dentists (especially younger ones) over diagnose their cavities.  It was also mentioned that the 3D x-ray technology being used at my stepfather's practice helps avoid these kind of mistakes.  All things considered, Dr. Tanzil's office doesn't have this technology, and I would recommend looking for a dentist that does as a first option. Update 5/27/21: They called and asked for a cleaning and I said I'm not coming back. The hygienist tried to call and inquire about this, and talked over me every time I was trying to explain and didn't finish my story. Basically, 2 dentists and another hygienist said they didn't see evidence of cavities, but somehow she could? Once again, Dr. Chang and Tanzil's office doesn't have 3D Xray technology. Don't trust one that doesn't, because they will either 1) make careless mistakes or 2) not make a mistake but just be sleazebags who want to upcharge you for no reason. Please be wary. read more

My son Miles (6) was complaining of a bad toothache and Dr Tanzil took him in the same day that I called! Not only did she handle him with care she was so comforting and sweet throughout the appt which she got through it quickly for him! I've been going to Dr. Chang for over 15 years. He's a great dentist. Of course, the most major work he's done on me has been 2 fillings. I get my teeth cleaned 3 times a year by the hygienist. Hygiene has been pretty good, but sometimes you may get a temp if regular hygienist isn't there. Dr. Chang is also the Dentist/Orthodontist for my kids. He's done a great job in straightening their teeth. He's been very meticulous, and not their teeth are perfectly straight. Dr. Chang also does implants. I've never had any done but I hear he does a great job. He also does some oral surgery, so he's a very well rounded and experienced dentist. Dr. Tanzil is terrible. I had an extraction done by Dr. Chang and everything went fine. He had to leave on vacation and the nightmare began. I came back after 6 days because I was in extreme pain, Dr. Tanzil said everything was fine and sent me on my way. I came back the next day being that I was still in extreme pain, again, left me with no information on what could be the issue. I had the nurse call Dr. Chang on vacation and he prescribed me new antibiotics and pain meds due to my circumstances. Dr. Tanzil then called the pharmacy to cancel my prescriptions. I call her back and she lies, tells me the pharmacy can't fill my prescription when I talked to the pharmacist who said she canceled my prescription. What a terrible feeling to go to a doctor/dentist to get treatment and feel like I'm being prejudiced against when I say I'm feeling extreme pain. read more

My mom and I both have gone to Dr. Chang for over a decade. The staff is friendly and they have been there since we started going (so it sounds like a pretty good place to work). My hygienist is wonderful. I haven't had to wait when I come in for appointments. Dr. Chang is very good at explaining what he's looking for and what he sees during my exams. They will book my next appointment right there, even though it is 6 months in advance--which is great for me because I'm terrible at calling to make appointments. It's easy to get an appointment at times that are convenient for me, whether it's in the evening after work or early in the morning. They are good about sending reminders via email, text and/or calls, whichever I prefer. Note: I've only come in for routine cleanings; I've never had to have surgery or root canals, so I can't comment on those experiences. read more

I went to dr.chang when I was in high school in the 70s. My cousin and i both needed braces. When we were done after 3 years he said our teeth were not straight enough and need 2 more years. My mother took me to another orthodontist who checked and said my teeth looked perfectly aligned. When we went back he argued with her and wouldn't take them off so she said she will find a dentist who will. When he did it i ended up with two cracked teeth cause he argued the whole time he tightened the wire and chipped another tooth plus he had it on so long it left two other teeth with indentations. We never referred anyone to him and i was told he had passed away a long time ago. I should have sued him for what he did. I have had many dentists after him that have said he ruined my teeth and have had a few more removed because of his screw up. read more

I have been Dr. Chang's customer for 50 years! He had just started his practice and I was a child taken by my Mom. He is dedicated to his craft, keeps up with technology, and maintains state-of-the art equipment. He is the only dentist my two adult children have seen (other than when one son was deployed in Iraq). My husband began using him when we married. Both my sons had their orthodontia handled by Dr. Chang--one of the few dentists who does both oral care and orthodontia. My husband had an upper denture "installed" prefaced by removal of his upper teeth--not a simple procedure, done professionally and carefully. I have never had anything go wrong, nor have I ever been steered in a direction I didn't want to go. I respect his skill and character. Once, I was referred by Dr. Chang to a root canal specialist when a nerve was dangerously close to the root and it needed additional care; indicating that he knows when to do the work himself and when to refer. My sons' wisdom teeth were impacted, and they were referred outside Dr. Chang's office. The staff is delightful. Sharina has superb follow-through and patience with scheduling appointments, and Anita handles chairside needs with Dr. Chang. I am sorry, but I don't know the name of the hygienist, but she is very good, calm and reassuring. My mother, sister, and her husband, and her sons see Dr. Chang, too. My sister had an implant, an experience that was frightening to anticipate and undergo, but it went well. I wouldn't hesitate to refer anyone to him. Dental work is expensive, insurance seldom covers enough. I'll never understand why when teeth are just as important as other body parts, but the dentist is not at fault for poor insurance coverage. Do not go to Dr. Mervyn Chang. I had an infected tooth in March and I asked him to pull and he convinced me to do a root canal. The root canal was infected again within a month. He kept trying to get me to get an implant which I can't afford. "We have financing" he told over and over again! Went to another dentist to have the tooth removed. The certified oral surgeon there told me the tooth should have been pulled to begin with. I submitted a claim with my insurance company against Dr.Chang and they found that the root canal should not have been done on that tooth and that he should refund a partial amount of the total cost of the root canal. I have not heard anything from him and really don't expect too. He is to arrogant to admit he made a mistake! Thanks for using up all my dental insurance Dr.Chang! I had to pay out of pocket to right his wrong! read more

I went to Dr. Chang for an implant. I had never been to him before and was a bit apprehensive because he does so many things in dentistry. Boy was I pleasantly relieved when I found out how professional and knowledgeable he was when it came to implants. He has a Diplomate from International Congress of Oral and Implantology and it shows. Dr. Chang is very caring and takes the time to go over every procedure he is about to do. Some dentist that specialize in implants charge exorbitant amounts of money. Though implants are not cheap, Dr. Chang's charges are fair in comparison. When I got too old for my pediatric dentist, I asked him for a recommendation for an adult dentist. He gave me the name of his dentist - Dr. Chang. What better way to find a dentist? Dr. Chang did not disappoint. Staff is always courteous. Dr. Chang is very professional and I trust him. My father and brother also started going to Dr. Chang. My whole life, my father has hated every dentist he's been to, but he LOVES Dr. Chang. After a few years of seeing Dr. Chang, I moved away. When I returned to the area, I did not have dental insurance. Then, after 5 years with no dental insurance, I got a plan that would not cover Dr. Chang. I found a new dentist. I have good teeth, and generally all I'm getting are cleanings, so I figured it was worth saving some money with the cheaper plan. However, every time my father or brother mentioned Dr. Chang, I was jealous. My new dentist was always trying to up sell my husband and me on treatments that didn't seem necessary and the billing was always wrong. Finally, when open season came around last year, I switched to Aetna dental insurance because Dr. Chang is in-network. I had my cleaning and check-up yesterday, and it was great! My teeth felt cleaner than they have in years, even though my old dentist was charging me for "deep cleanings", and I finally feel like my teeth are in good hands again. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Chang's since moving to the Bay Area in 1992. Let me preface this by saying that my teeth were not cared for properly as a child, so, as a result, I had alot of ongoing dental problems as a adult. Dr. Chang has performed root canals, fillings, a dental implant and I even had my teeth whitened through his office. He is caring and down to earth. He even came to my home on a Friday night when I thought something was wrong with one of my teeth and examined my mouth with a flashlight! His advice to purchase an OralB electric toothbrush when they first came out saved my gums. His office manager is professional, friendly and detail-oriented. If you need/are planning on having a dental procedure performed, she will help you figure out the most cost-effective way that works with your insurance plan. His dental hygienists are awesome!
