I love going to the cinema. It is one of the genuine pleasures of my life.
I love being enveloped by the darkness of a sometimes cavernous, sometimes cozy room. I love the whir and flicker of the film being spooled through the projector (no love lost for digital here). And THAT stream of light, as it hits the screen. It's a marvel. Even if I don't enjoy the film itself, I enjoy the cinema.
That's the set-up. Now for The Mercury Cinema. The foyer has recently been refurbished, and truth be told, I much preferred it before. With it's idiosyncratic caricatures of Bill Murray. But that's not the point.
By not being a Multiplex, and avoiding the distribution pitfalls of having to book new films in for a set run, the Mercury frees itself up to show whatever it sees fit.
And that is a wonderful thing. And also, their 'Candy Bar' is not that at all. It is a snack bar for adults and provides appropriate catering for such. By avoiding oversized buckets of popcorn and soft drink- the cinema is making a definite stand against the multiplex principle and wearing its a colours on its chest: it's an adult cinema for discerning adult views.
And while its true, they do often show films that one can regularly acquire on DVD, to complain about that is to miss the point. The Cinematheque program is the cinemas bread & butter and its a great idea.
At first, I always found the idea of buying a multiple film pass a nuisance, but the more I thought about it (and the more I attended), the more I fell for the idea. Its in the favor of both the cinema and the audience.
Anyway, I'd recommend the Mercury, and specifically The Cinematheque, for anyone who wants to get out and watch a film. Projected, And with an audience. read more
