Where else can you find a cinema with a choir?!
Julia C.

This Cinema is nice with professional staff & some downright garish looking decor!! You know what? Thats what I love about it! I have been up there a few times when events have been on - a choir has been singing, there has been champagne and chocolate on 'ladies nights' held there (they also have free fruchocs & door prizes on those nights!). The decor is the only thing I would question but they help to make the atmosphere of this nearly 'flamboyant' cinema. I enjoy coming here!

Ticketing and Candy Bar

I admit I am a bit of a pirate when it comes to my movie watching habits but that does directly correlate with the now $20 or more per person that you spend on going to see a movie at the cinema. So needless to say you want your money to be well spent! Wallis Mitcham has managed to maintain a small suburb feel while being able to offer a combination of big box office with smaller art nouveau films. The cinema ticks all my boxes of what I look for... - clean - not full of teeny bops - good front counter service - variety of films on offer - reasonable sized cinemas and screens (not too cramped and good views from all seats) - good sound system in each cinema Parking isn't always easy around the cinema because you don't have access to undercover and there are limited parks out the front.

The Trak has been an icon as the…read moreoriginal art house cinema in Adelaide since the 1960's, featuring mostly European movies at the time. It's not a large cinema and nowadays there is a mix of art house and general mainstream movies showing. It hasn't undergone any major upgrades over the years and so remains true to its original style. Upon entering through the glass doors downstairs there are stairs leading up to the main floor and a stair chair, which is unique but still awkward for someone in a wheel chair so access is limited in this respect. Once up there it's like going back in time, it's very dimmly lit and a bit bohemian in feel. The ticket booth looks like a bar and actually is as and they also serve snacks and drinks. On the side wall are used DVD's for sale from $5 - $10 each, a stand with free magazines like Rip It Up, Attitude Magazine, etc. If you're a regular or intend to be one there is the Trak Cinema Platinum Card, whereby you can purchase 11 tickets for $99, which equates to $9 per movie..not bad. Anyway, check it out for an injection of culture and change of scenery plus there's a few cafes around and Burnside Shopping Centre across the road. And by the way, there's not much off street parking round the back of the cinema so it's best to find a road side park if you're lucky enough, otherwise in the shopping centre car park. Plus check online, over the phone or the newspaper for session times.

Predictable plot twists after formulaic action sequences - give me a break. Trak Cinema always has something interesting to offer, and their focus on foreign and arthouse films makes it a beacon of culture. The building itself could probably do with some redevelopment, but I think that would be missing the point. The worn out and outdated look of the building makes it somewhat of a relic, and it doesn't need dazzling lights and signs to draw people in. The nostalgic feel of the cinema is an experience to appreciate, and though it might be a dramatic change from the enormous screens we're used to nowadays, it has character that warms up to you. Whilst showing the occasional mainstream film, you won't expect to see any B-grade bullshit here. The films are carefully picked from international and local collections, and whilst you might not see as many explosions in this cinema, you will see films with great content.

Before the introduction of the megaplex, most of Adelaide's cinemas looked like the Capri in this stunning deco building with its lovingly restored interior. This beautiful Art Deco style cinema was originally opened in 1941 and hasn't really changed much over the years - as an old time movie buff I find this fact incredibly comforting. In the late 1970's the cinema was purchased by the Theatre Organ Society of Australia and it's these guys who have kept both the theatre and its centrepiece, the pipe organ, in state of the art condition. In 2003 the Theatre Organ Society won a commendation in the Edmund Wright Heritage Award for their efforts. While the organ isn't my thing, you have to appreciate the passion of the people who do love it. I've taken older family members to the cinema who have been clearly been transported back to their own childhood when they listen to the organ play. Over the years I've been to the Capri to see Hollywood blockbusters and Independent Releases and the theatre itself is available to hire for screenings and functions. If you want to make a night out of it of your movie experience at the Capri take advantage of their movie / dinner deals in conjunction with the Goodwood Hotel.

Pricing is on par with other cinemas and while it doesn't have the high tech digital equipment experience, movies come to life on the single large screen. I have not tried the upper balcony but I presume it would be quite nice.

Staff are generally cheerful and the cinema seats are so comfy. Don't even get my started about Gold Class though cause that is another (five star) review. For those not in the know, Gold Class is one of the cinema types that Event Cinemas offer and it is beyond amazing. Event Cinemas really have a wide range of cinema experiences. Besides just the ordinary cinema experience, they also have a stadium like cinema configuration called Vmax which in my opinion is worth splurging the extra $4-5 for to get the leather seats, extra legroom and cup holders. I went to see Ted in vmax but even better was Fast and the Furious Five. Tickets are reasonably priced and the queue generally isn't that bad. If there is one gripe I have about this place, it is the snack bar. Yes, they have a great range, popcorn, chocolates, soft drinks, lollies, but at $6 for a small bag of M&M's, the pricing is outrageous. Even the small popcorn has a premium of $6.50. And they don't particularly like it if you bring your own food in either - they have sort of eased this a bit though. To summarize, when you go up the escalator to Event Cinemas Marion, you are very literally going up a stairway to cinema heaven. You shall love what Event has to offer. I know I do, I keep going back for my movie fix.

Both stainless steel pots leaked boiling water down the side of them as you poured which ran off the table and down onto my leg. I was glad I had jeans on or else I would have been badly burnt. I emailed Event Cinema's, they replied over a month and a half later and the only response they had was "we are sorry this happened to you, we have not had anyone complain about the tea pots before." These cinemas are very poorly managed, and they don't take their customers seriously. I emailed them as I didn't want anyone else to be burnt the same way!

But y'know, sometimes I like to impress people by making some shallow references to classic or contemporary film history. Also, some films are just better on a big screen, with a bucket of popcorn, a beer and a big crowd. The Mercury Cinema is where I go whenever I want to see something that isn't showing in all the blockbuster cinemas. Each year they host a range of foreign film festivals, special weeks featuring an auteur's films, and the seniors on screen program. The programming here is fun, with stuff like John Hughes specials, but also smart - they show tonnes of rare old films I couldn't find anywhere else. The cinema itself is in good condition, and they are renovating the foyer at the moment too. You can get great deals on tickets too, sometime they host parties with all you can drink, a band, plus a movie. They often design their own posters, using local illustrators. For the Bill Murray special they ran earlier this year, they printed up a bunch of awesome screen-printed shirts featuring a very sweet caricature of Murray. At the moment the Mercury is playing a series of silent films with local musicians playing new scores. Hours vary according to the program each week.

It has all the wonderful potential of any screening venue, but it never seems to really take off. Seldom are there big events or special moments in the venue. I've attended many short film screenings and special screenings of new films, old films, odd films and fancy films only to discover that you can't even buy a coffee behind the bar. They run the Cinematheque regularly, but most of the time it is jammed with films that you can grab at the local DVD store and watch on your big screen at home in far more comfort. It is possible to hire the venue, but again it seems a little over the top to do so unless you are screening something you can fill the venue for, otherwise you'd do just as well to show something on a big TV screen in a cheaper venue. The thing I like least about it is the rowdy night life in the evenings that you come face to face with on nearby Hindley Street. It's all very well to sit down and enjoy a long feature film, but all the positive vibe of that experience is very swiftly slapped away when some drunk is spewing at your feet or worse than that swinging punches or tossing bottles... and I've unfortunately had that type of experience so much around that area at night that I simply avoid it these days.
