This is a pretty cool cinema, but then again I do tend to appreciate the cinemas that make up the Palace chain namely because they tend to show films that not many of the other cinemas are willing to show (or at least most of them). The other thing is that this is the only cinema in the Adelaide CBD, so it is also pretty convenient, and the fact that they also include mainstream films on their lists does help in providing a central place to go and see a movie. Now one of the only cinemas left in the CBD, which is not a bad thing as I love the Palace Nova. Great variety of films, you can take your wine or beer into the cinema, and good for functions! Be aware that if you can't use stairs, at the Nova tucked away to the far left is a lift. I call them the "stairs of death" but hey go up and down a few times - great workout! ;-) Always check which cinema you are in well in advance. Nothing worse than leisurely hanging out in the Nova's foyer the realising you've gotta run across Rundle Street! read more

But what I would really like to discuss in this review is how happy I was that THIS was one of the few cinemas in Adelaide that was showing Dave Chappelle's first movie last year. My best friends and I agree - since we loved his watching his series on the Comedy Channel, we had to see his movie in the cinema. Let me show you how funny this movie was to us. Some of you have seen Dave Chappelle's show, right? Let's start with these ones: -"I'm Rick James, (beep)! Enjoy yourself." -"Remember what the Bible says: He who is without sin, cast the first rock. And I shall smoketh it." -"Drugs is all around you kids. Look at that magic marker cap. What the hell you think that is, some kind of crayon? Take it off and sniff it and get high." The location of these cinemas gets the first star. I love being able to spend some time in town and make going to the cinema part of a fun and leisurely day out. So many cinemas are part of suburban shopping centres and smell of popcorn and cheap snacks and are surrounded by noise and bright lights. I love that Palace Nova is the contrast of that experience. The films are usually more alternative than most other cinemas and they support various themed film festivals. There is a special deal on Mondays where films are much cheaper (even more so before 4pm) and there is also a $7 deal for seniors M-F before noon. I recommend their movie club. It's valid for a year, is the same price as an admit one ticket and offers a complimentary ticket as part of the membership. So even if you go once, it costs the same plus you get another free ticket on your birthday and discounted tickets the rest of the year. I got the run around service-wise today trying to buy a gift voucher and I've found their service many times to be a bit slow and causal, however if you relax into it, it's ok! Nova used to be cash only, so that could be worth checking in advance or coming prepared. I love all the leaflets showcasing the films. Picking up some leaflets, having a glass of wine and deciding on a film is a great way to spend some time! read more

I've heard tell of a renaissance in Australian filmmaking. If this is true (and if the latest Australian movie I've seen, 'Burning Man', is any indication, then I think it is), we need arthouse cinemas like Nova to take full advantage of this boom in quality. I was allowed into the advanced screening of 'Burning Man' for free because one of my university lecturers was conducting a Q&A with the film's director. Nova does things like this all the time and it's great. Sure, you get your typical pedants who've swallowed a thesaurus in the audience asking questions in an attempt to show off or outsmart the director for a shred of schadenfreude, but then sometimes real and interesting questions are asked and the director offers some very illuminating answers that deepen your understanding of the film. The seating is comfortable, the theatre warm and intimate, and the design is architecturally challenging. The screen is huge and of great quality. The snack bar is filled with temptations and offensively expensive. Upmarket commercial releases are on the schedule. All the motifs of cinema are here. But where Nova shines is in its regular special film events and festivals, and the support it lends to the growing potential of Australian film. This cinema, part of Palace Nova with the other located about 100m away on Rundle St, is one of the best and only city cinemas which shows new releases, classics, art house and alternative movies. Some of their showings include opera, the French Film Festival and Religious movies. There is 10 screens across the 2 cinemas, including eximax - Adelaide's biggest screen. The rest of their cinema is nice as well, with good seats and updated sound equipment. Two things I like about Palace Nove is the location on Rundle and cheap Mondays! Thats right, not Tuesday, Monday. Tickets are $7-8 with only the glasses extra for 3D movies. That have lots of premiere screenings and events here, with parties, red carpets, fundraisers etc. You can also hold your own events in the cinemas, with AV equipment able to be plugged in to the screen. read more

Palace Nova East End Cinemas is a great place to catch an art-house or foreign film when you're in the mood to escape the predictability of Hollywood cinema. From the outside it doesn't look like a large cinema. However, once you actually go into the cinema where your movie is being screened, you wonder how they fit it all in. The size of the screens don't meet the sizes of larger cineplexes such as Hoyts or Greater Union, but I personally find them cosy and give the films a more intimate experience. This cinema has character! Another great thing about this is that you don't have to worry about another hundred or so people talking, eating loudly or moving around whilst you're trying to enjoy your movie. You might not see too many Hollywood titles here, but there are plenty of films from large production companies being screened. They once screened Che Part I and Part II back-to-back (and if you've seen these movies you'll understand how long that would go for) - and that's what I like about this cinema. They often hold foreign film festivals and art-house specials, so there's always something interesting to check out. In addition to standard cinema snacks like popcorn and ice-cream, you can also get coffee and beer from behind the snack bar and bring it in with you to your movie. Missed about 10 minutes of the movie trying to find staff to direct me to the next closest toilet through dark rabbit warrens. Either they could (a) fix the toilet that has been broken for months, or (b) alert you to the fact it still isn't useable and give you some direction of where to go when you are in a hurry. Palace Nova is one of those cinemas I wish I went to more often. Reasons? - You can drink beer, wine, & cider in the cinema. - They have plenty of art house, foreign, and hard to find at giant cinema chain films - They're pretty darn close to where I live I've been here for a few Harry Potter midnight screenings, foreign films, documentaries, and plenty of other movies. There's almost always something on that I want to see - but I'm just not really a cinema goer, or I just simply for get to buy tickets before a movie's run is over. I find the Palace Nova cinemas can be a little small, and in some of them the seats don't feel like they're at the right angle. There have been quite a few times when I've been craning my neck just to see the screen properly. I also like it when Jonny's Popcorn Delights (http://www.yelp.com.au/biz/jonnys-popcorn-delights-royal-park) is parked on Rundle Street, because I can get myself a bag of the sweet & salty popcorn before the movie starts. This is a great place to meet up for a movie and lunch or dinner after. This was my first time I went there to see Sisters (really funny movie by the way) It is a small screen theatre but for $8 a movie I can't complain. They have Most of the latest movie such as Star Wars. The seat was comfortable and staffs were friendly. There are snacks and drinks you can get to go with. I will definitely come back! This might have to be my all-time favourite cinema! Ever since I found it, I've been nothing but pleased with my experiences. It may be a little more pricey for a ticket, compared to your average cinema, but it is totally worth it. I don't care what people say, the amalgamation of Palace with Nova cinemas was the best thing since freshly popped corn in Adelaide. This place now has the best of both worlds for whatever mood takes your fancy, from reading subtitles to watching box-office smash hits to sing-a-longs to midnight marathons, this place has it all and still manages to retain its boutique-i-ness feel. Furthermore, it does Monday student specials and cheap Tuesdays for seniors and it has a the best value movie club going around. Arguably your movie screen isn't going to cause you to physically turn your neck from left to right to watch a movie and you won't be deaf at the end from the surround sound, nor will your cinema always be immaculately clean BUT anywhere that lets you drink and eat cheese without having to be classed as "Gold Class" has me questioning why I'm not there every night of the week. I've also noticed that these guys are going to start doing dinner and movie ticket deals with some of the vendors on Rundle St so you can make a night of it with that very special someone. read more

When life hands you a Jeffery, stroke the furry wall at The Palace Nova. There are kinky purple velvet walls that are surely there to be stroked, velvet is made to feel, not for you to watch idly. of course you have to get a movie ticket first. It feels slightly wrong to even say the word movie in relation to this cinema, what we're really talking about is art house film. Art house refers to features that are generally directed at a niche audience or are intended to raise both of your eyebrows instead of just one, you wont find these films playing at Marion Megaplex for example. Which I think is a shame because I believe too many people tend to miss out on these films purely because in their ignorance, they forgot to realise that the Palace Nova existed. The other half of the cinema located across the street plays more mainstream stuff, I went there every year to watch Harry Potter, this used to be the old Imax so you can imagine how big the screen is. There is more to cinema life than the Hoyts and Wallis' of this world. get on it. read more

Ok let me clarify, I totally agree with the other ladies that Palace Nova rocks for your art-house, controversial, underground and foreign perve flicks (who doesn't love one of them). This poor rating is only for those who like me are fooled by the 'biggest screen' deal and naively assume their action film will be shown on it. Because there is only ONE not-tiny screen (and if you ain't got it tough bikkies). I made the mistake of organising to see Avatar here and woe was us - it was on the Nova side and it sucked! I love the film but a million times more once I saw it the way it was meant to be seen: MASSIVE screen, huge packed cinema, stereo surround sound, 3D high-def, you get the picture. In a nutshell - back up and step away from the action/CGI movies on offer here! read more

When my friend and I were asked to be extras in a film one night, it turned out it was for an Australian feature that was only played at Palace Nova. Unfortunately when we ventured off to the cinemas we missed the first ten minutes of the film, and then later realized that it was in those ten minutes that we had our moment of stardom. Bugger. This cinema definitely has a slightly alternative vibe, with much more of a sophisticated setting then your regular candy bar cinema, where kids nearly bull dose you over come school holidays. The films here are a mix of a few conventional currents, and then also the quirky or even "organic" features. It is actually a great cinema to support Australian film. The Nova is a modern setting, even if there is only approximately two movies playing at once. It is across the road that you will find more cinematic options. Mind you the popcorn price is a bit ridiculous. I personally like seeing a film at the Palace cinema on a Friday night, followed by dinner, dessert or drinks down Rundle Street. read more

Small seats, small screens, and tons of stairs- but who cares!! I loved this tiny little indy theatre. I saw a fantastic Miyazaki Showcase here at the end of August. I played hookie from school and saw 3 films in a row (wow did that make my head spin). Do not go here expecting flash and new glitz and glamor. This place is an old little gem, and by that I mean- don't judge a book by its cover, judge it by it's contents. Support independent theatres before you cause them to go out of business! read more

Both the Palace and The Nova are wheelchair accessible, but only just! Both buildings have floor carpet that is very hard to push on, but the access at The Nova is much worse than The Palace due to an extremely small lift and assist-only carpeted ramps into each cinema. Once in each cinema at Nova, the spaces where wheelchairs get put are all on a steep slope and extremely close to the screen - not at all comfortable! At least at The Palace all wheelchair seating is at the back of the each cinema and on the flat! Don't even get me started on the awful toilet facilities! Both buildings need a major makeover, and the sooner the better! I'm a member of their movie club but am yet to feel as though I am receiving any benefit or reward for the price paid. read more

Hurtle your mind back to through the eons of time. Years and years ago the Adelaide CBD was packed with cinemas. Greater Union and Academy are gone and all burden lies on Nova (and the Mercury somewhat) to keep that culture thriving. Located in the East End amidst the plaza where the Exeter and Elephant attract the night's drunkards. They host many of the big releases, but a nice mix of independents and film festival sprinkled throughout the year. read more

Not a bad place but not the best in Adelaide. It does have a reasonable selection of mainstream and Arthouse however the interior could do with an update. The chairs are not the comfiest and do not have drink holders. Also the lack of freedom of movement to choose your seat means you could be stuck in front of some annoying guy with his foot rammed in the back of your head. read more
