    Candy Bar
    Jo B.

I go to this cinema for its atmosphere, to see the same movies I'd see at any standard cinema. The special thing about Piccadilly is its gorgeous old feeling, like you've walked back into the 1920s and should be wearing feathers. Every surface is covered in either a rich material or a fancy stone facade. There are red velvet curtains beside the screens and your seat is upholstered in matching material. The Candy Bar here is gorgeous, though expensive. It's a lovely place to sit while you wait. The upstairs cinema is cavernous, and gets quite chilly. This is a great place to watch anything epic and dramatic. The downstairs cinemas are smaller but I find them comfortable and still enjoyable. The prices here are quite reasonable, especially for students, so treat yourselves to Adelaide's Moulin Rouge of cinemas for a little fun.

    Review Highlights - Piccadilly Cinemas

The cinema has always been very clean and tidy every time I have visited and the candy bar well stocked and reasonably priced!

But y'know, sometimes I like to impress people by making some shallow references to classic or contemporary film history. Also, some films are just better on a big screen, with a bucket of popcorn, a beer and a big crowd. The Mercury Cinema is where I go whenever I want to see something that isn't showing in all the blockbuster cinemas. Each year they host a range of foreign film festivals, special weeks featuring an auteur's films, and the seniors on screen program. The programming here is fun, with stuff like John Hughes specials, but also smart - they show tonnes of rare old films I couldn't find anywhere else. The cinema itself is in good condition, and they are renovating the foyer at the moment too. You can get great deals on tickets too, sometime they host parties with all you can drink, a band, plus a movie. They often design their own posters, using local illustrators. For the Bill Murray special they ran earlier this year, they printed up a bunch of awesome screen-printed shirts featuring a very sweet caricature of Murray. At the moment the Mercury is playing a series of silent films with local musicians playing new scores. Hours vary according to the program each week.

It has all the wonderful potential of any screening venue, but it never seems to really take off. Seldom are there big events or special moments in the venue. I've attended many short film screenings and special screenings of new films, old films, odd films and fancy films only to discover that you can't even buy a coffee behind the bar. They run the Cinematheque regularly, but most of the time it is jammed with films that you can grab at the local DVD store and watch on your big screen at home in far more comfort. It is possible to hire the venue, but again it seems a little over the top to do so unless you are screening something you can fill the venue for, otherwise you'd do just as well to show something on a big TV screen in a cheaper venue. The thing I like least about it is the rowdy night life in the evenings that you come face to face with on nearby Hindley Street. It's all very well to sit down and enjoy a long feature film, but all the positive vibe of that experience is very swiftly slapped away when some drunk is spewing at your feet or worse than that swinging punches or tossing bottles... and I've unfortunately had that type of experience so much around that area at night that I simply avoid it these days.

I hate to say it but I don't know if I could go again without being Gold Grass. Tickets were over $30 and you got a bean-bed and a complimentary cidar. It was fun, I have to admit. The issues I had were probably minor overall and hopefully this review will save someone from the madness we experienced so listen carefully. Make sure you have printed out your ticket, NOT your receipt. If you take your receipt to the front of the line to get scanned, you will have to go back to the box office to get the tickets printed out. Take some food if you don't want to wait in line for a VERY long time and on this particular night, they sold out of ice blocks and ice creams. It was a great night. Would I do it again? Yep, but only if I didn't mind parting with over $30 for Gold Grass. I loved having the extra space!!

So make sure you have something to keep you warm, even if it has been a hot day Arrive early. Films begin at about 8.30-9PM, but consider getting there at 7.30 when the cinema opens. You'll want a good spot on the grass. Bring a picnic and some wine and make an evening of it. Bring some cushions, or hire a beanbag. The beanbags are comfy, and the ground is cold. Bring bug repellant. No explanation necessary. If you do all that and have picked the right movie, it's a great relaxing night out in the fresh air with great food and drink. If you arrive late and get a crappy spot at the back, it can be terrible.
