This is no mega-plex with OTT fluro lights, cavernous spaces and gold-class seats: the Odeon's 2 screens are comfy, chilled and cheap, with all tickets to all sessions $8 all year round. Movies are new releases and blockbusters, with lots of family friendly flicks - if ONLY they showed cult or art house or Godard midnight screenings... I would bump them up a star in a flash. The snack bar is well stocked with movie going favourites. Boysenberry choc tops! Buttery popcorn! It's reasonably priced too: $7 for medium drink and popcorn (which is huge!). In short: a local, family owned cinema with a heart of gold.

There is nothing quite like being outdoors sitting in a beanbag, with blanket and a glass of wine. It is just so relaxing and a great opportunity for a family outing! Openair Cinemas are not all about movies though, they also have DJ's and musicians playing during the day. I love that they are using the space in this way! It is almost like it's own little festival. This year we were fortunate enough to be in the Star Class area to see the cult classic Grease! This was a super cool sing-a-long screening with all the words subtitled in cartoon graphics. I think I was laughing more than what I was singing. What a fun idea. So, what is Star Class you say? Well, you get treated like a VIP in the Star Class area! There is a reserved area right at the front and you are offered glass of wine, bean bag, and fluffy blanket to keep you warm. Oh wait for it... if you want a few more drinks for the night there is wait service! All you have to do is put your hand up and a waiter will help you with your request. That is my idea of VIP service. If only there was a massage option as well? The other great thing about Openair Cinema is that you can bring in your own picnic! I love that they invite you to bring in some food. I know lots of people work on budgets, so this is a great option if you want to feed the kids and friends. I was so excited about this; I packed a basket full of cheese, dips, chips, veggies and fruit. I actually made a platter. It was great! The one thing to remember is to dress warm for this event. As the set up is right near the shore, there are some winds at night that are a little chilly. I suggest keeping an eye on the weather and dress comfortably. Thought the location by the beach was amazing especially seeing as the cinema is held outside. The set up was very "beachy" / "summery" with plenty of deck chairs to sit on. Plenty of drink choices to choose from and the Famous Ben & Jerry's ice cream. We arrived whilst their was a dj still playing and the atmosphere was alive with the thought that summer is on her way. The screen was a blow up screen. Almost like a jumping castle but with a screen so that the film could be projected onto it. It was very cool and exciting for the kids to watch it rise especially as it was accompanied by some music. All in all a great fun night out with the family on a warm summers night :)

They recently installed an x-treme screen in Cinema 1 which claims to have bigger sound and better picture quality in more comfortable and spacious seats. Unfortunately you have to pay more to be in this cinema and if your movie is only playing in that one then you cop the fee.

They also hire out the venue for fundraisers, and the Royal Flying Doctors et al fit beatifully into the atmosphere with their crusts-cut-off curried egg sandwiches and sparkling wine. The best place to sit? Front and centre upstairs. You get a little shelf to put your sustinance and no one to block your view. But don't take my seat!

For those not in the know, Gold Class is one of the cinema types that Event Cinemas offer and it is beyond amazing. Event Cinemas really have a wide range of cinema experiences. Besides just the ordinary cinema experience, they also have a stadium like cinema configuration called Vmax which in my opinion is worth splurging the extra $4-5 for to get the leather seats, extra legroom and cup holders. I went to see Ted in vmax but even better was Fast and the Furious Five. Tickets are reasonably priced and the queue generally isn't that bad. If there is one gripe I have about this place, it is the snack bar. Yes, they have a great range, popcorn, chocolates, soft drinks, lollies, but at $6 for a small bag of M&M's, the pricing is outrageous. Even the small popcorn has a premium of $6.50. And they don't particularly like it if you bring your own food in either - they have sort of eased this a bit though. To summarize, when you go up the escalator to Event Cinemas Marion, you are very literally going up a stairway to cinema heaven. You shall love what Event has to offer. In his defence, he was given a great feed especially under one particular man's chair whom didn't do too well in keeping his food on the table. I forwarded some feedback online and was given complimentary tickets to compensate. I was grateful for the response, and it resonated good customer service. Unfortunately, second time round, the service within the cinema still lacked the value expected by those whom pay the extra bucks to amp up their cinema experience. We arrived an hour early to enjoy the lounge and order some drinks and food before the movie started. The lounge was understaffed and were struggling to keep up with orders to be ready for patrons within movie sittings. Even drinks were slow. We were lucky to receive some snacks 15min prior to entering the cinema. I expected service to be a little more efficient regardless. The food we ordered was fine but not worth the dear prices. The brownie sundae was the winner. Mainly due to the huge serving and overload of ice cream. The cinema itself was good. The new reclining chairs were comfy. Although the service issues were not the fault of the staff - whom did the best they could with limited resources, it isn't something I would pay for again. Particularly when there are competitors offering cheaper tickets.

Drive in cinema is one of my favourite ways to watch the latest flicks on the market. So it's an extra special thing to me to have the drive in so close to me. I love pinicking in the car, driving into a watch a movie in my PJs and fluffiest bathrobe, surrounded by numerous imports from my bed, quilts; pillows, and soft toys nonwithstanding. You can talk during the movie, eat with your mouth open, stick your feet up on the dashboard and nobody will yell at you (except maybe the people in your car). You can tie down a sofa to the top of your car and watch the movie from there as well! The possibilities are endless, just be careful not to run the heater constantly in winter to avoid killing your batteries and be one of those poor souls who have to go ask for a little help to jumpstart their car. Been there, done that, don't do it. So rug up, pile in with your softies, and prepare to 'enjoy the movie'!

I…read morewent to my very first concert at this Venue (Portishead) when I was around 15 years old and have been to countless performances since. There is something about a building like this, its persona almost adds to your experience. There is so much care and detail in its architecture, typical of the Art Deco era. This building was built in 1928 and stands strong. Next time you go here, look up and notice the geometric shapes around the lighting on the ceiling and also on the walls. It's really beautiful! There are a range of booths and balcony seating around the sides. If you are able to get a spot on the balcony, you really do have a magnificent view. I love that the owners have really kept this building's old charm and have not changed the décor to a modern style. I fear if they do, it will loose its charm. The bar area here is not the biggest, but it's separated into three areas. A downstairs almost salon style bar, main bar in the middle and then a side bar with old leather booths. There is not the best selection of drinks on sale here. This is really something I always thought they could improve on. But, I guess we can't have everything. One thing here that has always confused me is where they sell merchandise. It's in a really small room near the entry. It always causes congestion and they cannot really stock a huge amount in there. The staff are ok here. But I think they have a lot to put up with when you are throwing regular big shows with a lot of drunk people half the time. One thing that has always got to me is that the security guards here are always rude. I mean, I can't think of any time I have come here and not been told to GTFO straight after a show. Almost every time around 10 minutes after a band finishes they start shoving people out the door. Even at performing arts shows when everything is really mellow. It's a weird thing. Not sure if the owners know this happens? But they should. It's one of the reasons I have not given this place 5 stars. Nonetheless, this is one of my favourite Venues in town to see large music concerts and performances. I will forever have memories of amazing bands and bouncing floorboards while jumping up and down to music. Yay!

The best thing about this venue that I can say without any clue of acoustics, lighting and capacity is that the couches added to the second level are the best things ever to happen to a music venue, more should do this! Also the venue has great facilities inside but pretty terrible parking so nick a lift off your friend or risk parking in a side street and going for a looooong brisk walk.
