I used to think that there were two types of cinemas. The new, modern theatres with comfy seats, surround sound and huge screens, and the little suburban places where tickets cost $6 and leave you with a sore butt from the hard seats. It seems there are three classes: the soul-less mega complexes, the renovated suburban cinemas, and the cheap, hard seats. I live half way between Wallis Mitcham Cinemas and Hoyts Norwood and, given parking is often easier at Mitcham, I tend to go there. One holidays, the times at Mitcham didn't suit, so I took my youngster to Norwood. The ticket prices are a little more at Norwood. Thankfully, parking is included if you get your ticket validated. Prices are: adult $18.50, concession and student - $15.50 child - $13.50. In comparison, Mitcham is $17, $14, $13, but they often have specials where you can get a ticket for $10. Norwood is okay, but I much prefer the feel of Mitcham. I I would go here for the right session time, but if it was one or the other, I'd pick Mitcham every time.

    Popcorn at the movies!!

Love this venue although a very expensive school holiday treat!! Best think about movies here is the validated parking for cinema goers.seats are large and extremely comfortable. Children n enjoyed their individual boxes of popcorn while the mini pancakes were a great accompaniment to the coffee. Zootopia was our movie of choice today. The music was great but unfortunately was way to scary do the 4 year old to enjoy.

Hoyts is one of the few cinemas on the east side of Adelaide. It is a nice cinema and plays all of the commercial movies. The cinema is in a complex with a restaurant and Intensity. This means you can eat, the kids can play (or you, I have a soft spot for air hockey) and win tacky toys. The price of the movie tickets is quite reasonable, but going to the cinema is always an expensive outing for a whole family. The restaurant next to it often has specials enabling you to get cheaper tickets when you buy a meal. There is also a snack bar at the cinemas. This is extremely over-priced, so I often sneak in my own snacks from the Foodland down the road. The cinemas themselves are quite modern. They are purple and black, with very comfortable seats. When the movie is boring I have very easily fallen asleep. One feature of the cinema complex is an echoing section of the hallway. If you stand in the right spot and talk, you can hear it echoing all around you. A lot of teenagers hang in and around the Norwood Hoyts cinema, especially on the weekend. This means it can be quite noisy and rowdy. If you go to the wrong movie you may experience lots of talking, lasers and popcorn throwing. However, Hoyts really isn't as bad as some of the other, slightly dodgier cinemas around Adelaide.

I don't go to the movies that often, mostly because it is an expensive venture and I like DVDs, but when I do, I make the effort to go to Norwood. I live up North East, so there are quite a few local cinemas, some closer and easier to get to than Norwood, but Norwood is far the best. It's got a great location on The Parade so you can have a nice tea or dessert beforehand, parking is quite easy and the actual cinema is very nice. The seats aren't filthy, the screens are good, the service is friendly and there are no loud teenagers hanging around the stairs at any time of day or night. Definitely the best quality cinema in Adelaide, apart from Marion (I reckon), and I always make the journey to go see a movie there rather than sit in popcorn watching a tiny fuzzy screen closer to home.

Paid 24 dollars for the movie and watched it halfway through and got kicked out for no reason. Terrible staff

Nice cinema. In a great location, close to heaps of nice eateries. Only downer is that there they don't really play many 3D movies there.

Just eat before you go!! The food was so bad even the kids weren't into it. This was opening week for the boutique so I expected better. Honestly felt like returning it but just wasn't getting friendly vibes from staff either. The alcohol selection was good so go movie+drinks. Hold the food.

I was a little disappointed to find that the Picadilly doesn't offer frozen slushies as drinks - maybe that's just in their competitor cinemas, or maybe it's a choice here at the Picadilly, but the frozen red slushie is a big part of my cinema ritual - I can stay home and watch a dvd on a big screen if I just want a big cup of diet coke - oh, yeah, where's the Coke Zero, too??? The complex is very clean, and the seats were uber comfortable - particularly compared to the somewhat cattle class seating in a megaplex, there was as much leg room here as there is in my Statesman. Nothing quite like the Gold Class offerings of the competitors, but you can get a good meal and movie package here, too. Sound was good, crisp, loud and clear - I didn't really feel a full surround sound experience here, but that may well have been the movie - "We Bought a Zoo" isn't the latest action blockbuster either :) Ticket prices... well... they're fair... I personally think all cinema's are overpriced for what they offer these days, but when they're all overpriced you get to live with it, right?? For the same price for a family of four we could have bought two full price DVD's and had them forever... why am I going to the cinema again??

Before the introduction of the megaplex, most of Adelaide's cinemas looked like the Capri in this stunning deco building with its lovingly restored interior. This beautiful Art Deco style cinema was originally opened in 1941 and hasn't really changed much over the years - as an old time movie buff I find this fact incredibly comforting. In the late 1970's the cinema was purchased by the Theatre Organ Society of Australia and it's these guys who have kept both the theatre and its centrepiece, the pipe organ, in state of the art condition. In 2003 the Theatre Organ Society won a commendation in the Edmund Wright Heritage Award for their efforts. While the organ isn't my thing, you have to appreciate the passion of the people who do love it. I've taken older family members to the cinema who have been clearly been transported back to their own childhood when they listen to the organ play. Over the years I've been to the Capri to see Hollywood blockbusters and Independent Releases and the theatre itself is available to hire for screenings and functions. If you want to make a night out of it of your movie experience at the Capri take advantage of their movie / dinner deals in conjunction with the Goodwood Hotel.

Pricing is on par with other cinemas and while it doesn't have the high tech digital equipment experience, movies come to life on the single large screen. I have not tried the upper balcony but I presume it would be quite nice.

It's not a large cinema and nowadays there is a mix of art house and general mainstream movies showing. It hasn't undergone any major upgrades over the years and so remains true to its original style. Upon entering through the glass doors downstairs there are stairs leading up to the main floor and a stair chair, which is unique but still awkward for someone in a wheel chair so access is limited in this respect. Once up there it's like going back in time, it's very dimmly lit and a bit bohemian in feel. The ticket booth looks like a bar and actually is as and they also serve snacks and drinks. On the side wall are used DVD's for sale from $5 - $10 each, a stand with free magazines like Rip It Up, Attitude Magazine, etc. If you're a regular or intend to be one there is the Trak Cinema Platinum Card, whereby you can purchase 11 tickets for $99, which equates to $9 per movie..not bad. Anyway, check it out for an injection of culture and change of scenery plus there's a few cafes around and Burnside Shopping Centre across the road. And by the way, there's not much off street parking round the back of the cinema so it's best to find a road side park if you're lucky enough, otherwise in the shopping centre car park. Plus check online, over the phone or the newspaper for session times.

Predictable plot twists after formulaic action sequences - give me a break. Trak Cinema always has something interesting to offer, and their focus on foreign and arthouse films makes it a beacon of culture. The building itself could probably do with some redevelopment, but I think that would be missing the point. The worn out and outdated look of the building makes it somewhat of a relic, and it doesn't need dazzling lights and signs to draw people in. The nostalgic feel of the cinema is an experience to appreciate, and though it might be a dramatic change from the enormous screens we're used to nowadays, it has character that warms up to you. Whilst showing the occasional mainstream film, you won't expect to see any B-grade bullshit here. The films are carefully picked from international and local collections, and whilst you might not see as many explosions in this cinema, you will see films with great content.
