Had a recent 4-night stay at Menger Hotel. Loved the overall look and feel. An historic hotel that retains a ton of the old school feel and charm. Room was nicely appointed and comfortable enough. Only issue was a step-up to enter that bathroom area. Wasn't really an issue for us, but it could impact someone with mobility issues. Pool area was ok, maybe needed a little TLC. Had a drink in the bar, which was very cool. Did not eat in the restaurant. Lots of old memorabilia throughout lobby and public spaces. Location was excellent. Short walk to RiverWalk attractions and Alamo is literally right next door. Would stay again.

    Beautiful décor.

This historic hotel was built in 1859 by Willian and Mary Menger. As one of the oldest buildings in the city and the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi River, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Approximately thirty-two spirits haunt the hotel. The Victorian-era lobby is stunning, and the décor is gorgeous - stained glass windows, marble floors, ornate wallpaper, historic artifacts, & lavish Corinthian columns add to the elegance. I'd feel like a queen if I stayed here. We initially intended to take The Sisters Grimm Ghost Tour of the hotel but couldn't fit it in our tight schedule, so we wondered around the hotel ourselves. As we were walking there was a particular section where I felt a spirit or two. I'm intrigued to come back for the ghost tour to hear about their stories.

Piggybacking on Guy H.'s experience in 2023... I am happy to report that the Menger Hotel is indeed still "alive" and well. My girls and I stayed here May 25-27, 2025. I booked a package that entailed a classic two doubles room with a balcony ($583.96). Our package was called "Room with a Boo" and included: + Two tickets to Sister Grimm walking haunted tour (my 10 & 11-year-olds loved it) + One autographed copy of the Haunted History of Old San Antonio + Two complimentary adult specialty cocktails + Daily complimentary valet for one vehicle + Priority early check-in (which we used) and late check-out The beds were not comfortable in my opinion. There were some lesser maintained areas. The front desk didn't give me my driver's license back right away and I was distracted by the millions of questions my children were asking about the famous ghost hotel. We really enjoyed it, though, overall. Fast valet. Relatively fast elevator. Clean room. Clean bathroom. Friendly hospitality. Fast bartenders. Very cool, yet, loud bar. The close proximity to Sisters Grimm, The Alamo, the plazas with all their shops, River Walk, a plethora of restaurants, and the mall. I'm a fan & would vacation here again!

If you are a fan of historic hotels, the Menger does not disappoint! I have lived in San Antonio for over a decade and have often brought out-of-town visitors to see the lobby, visit the shops, and have drinks in the quaint bar. This week, an animal died under our house, and we had to escape the odor for a few nights. My husband and I decided on a Menger staycation, and we just loved it! First, Eric at the front desk is the most attentive hotel employee that I have ever met. He is smart, helpful, and polite. He helped us extend our stay by another night when we decided we needed to enjoy more of our time there. He even helped me fix an error that I had made in my booking. The hotel remains under private ownership, which is rare these days. Most historic places have been bought by chains, but the Menger maintains its individuality. When I passed rooms that were being cleaned in the historic wing, I noticed that each was a different color and decorated distinctly. Our room was a lovely lavender, and the original bathroom tiles were charming. We had a comfortable mattress, convenient refrigerator, and large television. I highly recommend the room service because prices are very reasonable. We also tried the breakfast buffet. It wasn't spectacular, but the historic dining room was. It's worth at least one visit while you're there. The Victorian lobby is gorgeous, and it's especially fun to see it from the second and third floor. The shops are really fun to visit. I loved the Sisters Grimm and found many presents for family there. One thing that I noticed was that everyone working at the hotel seemed to be in a good mood. I imagine that I would take pride in working in such a place. The lobby and the gardens are great for lounging. Plenty of non-guests do pass through, but that used to be me, so I cannot complain. I'm adding the Menger to my list of favorite historic hotels. It's up there with the Roosevelt in NYC and the Palmer House in Chicago. As the Alamo Plaza is renovated, the space and views will only get more beautiful.

Staff was rude. We called at 11am before check-in to ensure it was clean.. we were greeted with piles of trash outside of our room, awful smell of rotting food and gnats flying everywhere...Our room was filthy, filthy towels and blankets in entry way closet, urine on toilet, long black hair in bathtub, used coffee cups in wet bar. Random fluid crusted stains on every tile. They no longer give drink coupons... don't bother staying here. So many fluid stains everywhere... smelled of urine so bad, I couldn't use other bathroom. Staff got defensive when I asked for it to be cleaned.

The service was good. The room was nice and we were surprised by how comfy it was! The courtyard was great and so was the lobby. We will definitely stay again. My only complaint, and it's not really a complaint as this is a historic hotel, but the bathroom is cramped, specifically the shower if you are plus sized. It was roomier than a cruise bathroom but still cramped so be mindful.

We enjoyed our two night stay at the hotel. Unfortunately with the construction the access to the valet is challenging and the setting is effected by the construction. Once that is completed I am sure it would be a 5-star review. Our room was nice and the staff were very friendly. I liked that there was coffee in the lobby in the morning. Easy access to the river once you got your bearings - it was confusing when we first arrived. We loved the historical nature of the hotel.

I was not excited about staying at the Menger bc the last time we had this tiny room that we could barely move in. What a nice surprise when we opened the door and the room was nice and large. Of course we wanted to stay in the historic side and I highly recommend it! We loved the foyer areas plus the courtyard as well. The pool was heated and very enjoyable. So glad the bar allows children before 10:00 pm bc it is an experience in itself. We sat upstairs where we could see the craftsmanship, amazing. Just walking around the here id an experience in itself!

Aug 20th my husband & I stayed at the Hotel. I just want to start off by saying this place is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. We wanted Room 2025 (Haunted room) but it wasn't available. So we got another random room, room 2042 thinking we weren't going to get any sort of Spirit activity. But we were wrong. So many awesome things happened that night that we caught on camera & audio. Aside from that, the staff every single person was awesome. From the valet to the desk clerks. But I have to say two people stood out the most One was Eric who was our desk clerk when we first came in. Very cheerful, smiled a lot, talked to us engaged with us and welcomed us. And then the best one of all was Tim the nightclerk. Not only did he take the time to talk to us and play little joke on us, but he gave us some pamphlets that y'all had behind the desk for people who like the haunted spiritual stuff. And we exchanged ghost stories, and he showed us the window that you could hear all the glass tapping. He was absolutely amazing especially for 3/4:00 a.m. lol Even leaving the hotel the desk clerks in the morning there are three of them and I believe one was a manager. We're all very welcoming and awesome. We're definitely going to come back again.

I really wanted to eat at Ostra again this visit, because I saw redfish on the menu and wondered if it was really as good as my memory of it. I was initially bummed that Ostra was closed for a private event during my stay, BUT my disappointment quickly turned to excitement when I saw the same dish offered on the room service menu. YES!! I could go on for many paragraphs about how great our stay was at Hotel Emma but I will keep it short as this is something you just need to experience. First off, from checking in to, room service, to drinks in the Library, to our checkout, the staff was fantastic, friendly, and there to assist with absolutely anything you needed or wanted. Even the room service staff was top notch! The rooms were beautiful and well set up for comfort and luxury. Even the bathroom was luxurious and inviting. We enjoyed checking out the Private Library while having cocktails and learning even more about this fascinating building from the new and friendly Concierge. The pool was beautiful, warm and inviting and offered an interesting view from one of the upper floors. The Hotel bar offered some great perks for guest, private upstairs access away from the crowds, top notch service and attention from the staff and the opportunity to spend some time sipping cocktails on the couch in private in an old 28,000 gallon beer finishing tank. Having coffee and pastries on a beautiful outdoor patio in the morning was also another great opportunity. There was close access to many different places in the Peal Brewing square area adjacent to Hotel Emma including a great morning street fair on Sunday. Hotel Emma is the only 5 Star Hotel that we are aware of in Texas and also provided an outstanding Michelien rated restaurant for dinner (separate review). Over all, we can not find one thing we were unhappy with during our stay at Hotel Emma, other than the fact that our stay was far too short. If you are looking for the ultimate in Hotel stays/service, you MUST take some time and come for a stay. We will definitely be returning to Hotel Emma on our next trip to San Antonio.

It truly is an exceptional property - check in was quick and easy and the room was stunning. It kept the integrity of the original building with exposed concrete walls and floors and beautiful lights and decor. The bathroom is also stunning and the shower is the best hotel shower I have ever encountered with lovely lavender shower gels and lotions. It does however lack counter space which makes it a little difficult to get ready as there is nowhere to place make up etc. Each night there is a traditional turndown service where they bring you fresh water, ice and macarons from the local bakery which is a lovely treat. The hotel also offers free coffee delivered to your room or available in the downstairs library and comes with two tokens for afternoon cocktails! The hotel bar is beautiful with delicious cocktails and bar snacks and the hotel is surrounded by some of the best restaurants in San Antonio at the Pearl. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the fact that the room was very noisy and it was difficult to sleep. They provide eye masks and ear plugs at turndown so likely are aware! A lot is unavoidable due to the structure of the hotel - the exposed concrete, high ceilings make everything echo so when guest were passing you could hear every word echo back but the room also had noisy pipes with a running water sounds all evening and a fridge that was so , so loud it made sleep difficult ! That's a deal breaker for me as the one thing I need to do in a hotel especially when there for a work trip - is sleep! Other than that it is a stunning property snd certainly one of the most beautiful properties I have ever stayed in !

Ironically, because of the location, the boat tours go by about 30x a day you and you will hear the Selena bridge story about as many times... but that's part of the River Walk experience If you stay in a River Walk room - most likely it will be a shared balcony. It was interesting, kinda like being at the pool in terms of privacy but honestly a bit more separation would have been appreciated-even a plant. The hotel itself is a grand old dame--and it definitely shows its age. Behind the beautiful holiday decorations, the floors felt dirty and really needed a deep cleaning or vacuuming. Every time someone walked into the elevator you could feel the floor drop and shift. The adobe-style architecture is charming and floors not so much-they slope noticeably, and the carpet has divots and wear that add to the "creaky" feeling. Overall, the place feels a bit tired. That said, the staff truly try hard, which deserves credit. The hotel has undeniable character and doesn't feel like a chain hotel at all. If you can overlook the obvious maintenance and cleanliness issues, it's still iconic and charming in its own way. Ratings: Cleanliness: (2/5) Staff Effort: (3/5) Location: (5/5) A lovely location with tons of history--just needs some serious TLC to match its reputation.
