My daughter and I made a late arrival to 6th Annual Tamale! Holiday Festival. It was our first visit to The Pearl and we were impressed with what they had done in the area. Had heard about it and now we see they have done a beautiful job with the property. The festival was crowded and everyone there appeared to be having a great time. Many were walking around with their paper containers stacked with tamales. There was live music, a good number of booths with tamale vendors and a couple areas for beer sales. There was also a chicken/beef/shrimp kabob stand that was very popular! We tried some of the pork and cheese/jalapeño tamales that were flavorful and reasonably priced. A big surprise for us at the end of the event was when the people at the HEB both yelled out "FREE TAMALES"! I got two dozen frozen tamales. Nice treat! Looking forward to the 7th Annual next year. Oh, and I'll be back to visit The Pearl.

    Welcome, Culinary Institute of America!

One of the things I love most about my adopted home town, San Antonio, is that rather than razing abandoned industrial structures - or allowing them to crumble into irredeemably decrepit and hazardous eyesores - said structures are instead revamped, renewed and revitalized into completely new entities. The former Pearl Brewery is a perfect example: the behemoth on the river is now a multi-use property which features housing; two schools (Aveda and the Culinary Institute of America); an ever-expanding collection of shops; a parking garage; restaurants; a yoga studio; bicycle rentals; and a twice-weekly farmers' market. The rebirth is amazing - I especially admire the "mini-mall" area, with its post-industrial modern chic: enormous fans high above the intersecting corridors, and suspended lighting! It's a nice destination, as well as a good point of origin for a trek through the "museum reach" of the Riverwalk. And the free parking - in the shade of an elevated stretch of 281 - is another stroke of genius!

I came here on Friday for the Movie in the park (check them out on Facebook). My local friend told me this is the part of the Riverwalk that locals hang out and that is so true, other than the tour boat that comes around, all the people are from SA. My experience with the Pearl is mainly with the Movie in the park, Friday night, around 8:40, Pearl and Alamo Drafthouse team up to show a film. You can bring a blanket, drinks, food and enjoy a night of free movie. It is a bit hot before 9PM, but after 9 when the wind is blowing, very nice feeling.

Over the last few years, what was once "the old" Pearl Brewery has undergone an amazing transformation. Buildings have been restored, shops have been added, and a few restaurants have opened that have had a huge impact on our food scene in San Antonio. You can also find a culinary institute, breathtaking venue spaces, and a weekend farmer's market. I love seeing old things made new, and I think the folks at Pearl have done an incredible job restoring this space. Pearl is fast becoming a tourist destination, but is so locally-minded that it's important to San Antonio on many levels. They've also had a hand in the development and expansion of the Riverwalk. If you go to get a table at one of the great restaurants in this new space and face a wait, you can head down the stairs to the river and take a stroll to see some of the gorgeous landscape and art installations dotted along. So many cool things happen here, from fun events to fundraisers to concerts. Pearl is definitely a must-see when you're in San Antonio, and if you're a local, its such a great place to visit and a blessing to our community!

I spend a bit of time here on Saturdays at the Farm Market. I doubt I will come any other time as it is a bit rich for my blood. That is a shame. I am sure the shops are very nice, but just to pricey for me. They have a lot of room there. Since they only run the Farm Market on Saturday, why don't they have an Art Flea on Sunday? I am not suggesting a run down left over yard sale style of flea, but similar to the art sales they plug up the Riverwalk with. It would free up the Riverwalk traffic. It is more wheelchair friendly, and I think the Sunday exposure would benifit all the business that are there with the additional exposure. The buildings are beautiful to look at, and I do hope to go there often to get pictures and to learn more about the history of the building.

The perfect name for this perfect place. Every city has one. A place that matches or even overbounds the comfort of your own home - an escape. Slight european, slight americana, there is a feeling here, an energy, balanced as if by accident, that never wanes - and it's only getting better. There is something healing about a double expresso, a good book, and a quiet cafe sidewalk patio. Try it on a Sunday morning and you'll never stop. There are shops here that inspire creativity and tastes that will make you believe again, that, indeed, to eat is to truly live. il sogno, the Sandbar, C.I.A. Bakery, are all fine examples. There is often something going on for people to gather, be it an event or cause. It is afterall, the perfect venue - just north of downtown in the center of this great city. Every Saturday you can find the freshest ingredients for the weeks menu at the Farmer's Market starting at 9. And if you want to really experience the Riverwalk, then start your venture at Pearl. Paved walkways, exploding with multicolored foliage and local art, continue all the way to the downtown loop. There are bikes to rent if your not into walking, or hop on the river taxi here. This is also one of the most addicting places to run in San Antonio. Go as far or as long as you want. I could write much more, but you'll just have to experience this pearl of San Antonio yourself. Absolutely what I define as a best kept secret!

The place has really opened up their space- it used to be crowded with a maze of tight cubicles of gallery and studios. In the back, they've paved in the side and back yards, where bands set up, and additional galleries can be found. All of the art is local, handmade, and ranges in media. Some of the art can not be purchased, as they are installation pieces. The art here is all reasonably priced, and there's a great variety of artists and vendors selling cool stuff. This place gets hopping for Second Saturday, a monthly art walk that centers around the galleries by the train tracks at South Flores. The art is just part of the scene- check out the live music too! Budding artists can rent space here to do their art, and sell it when they have events.
