A JOB WELL DONE We…read morehave a long concrete driveway that curves up a hill to our home. The driveway is 47 years old and was in need of repairs to the driveway and to replace a low curved concrete wall on one side of the driveway, which was badly damaged by time and a large truck. From the Yelp website, I selected 3 five-star contractors for bids to repair the driveway. I'm in my late eighties and handicapped, but in my younger days I worked in construction starting back in 1952 as an apprentice carpenter. I have worked on many projects where I built forms to pour concrete for homes, high rise buildings, and underground tunnels. I have also worked on cementing casing in oil wells as deep as two miles and I have personally poured and finished concrete at my own home. So needless to say, I know a lot about concrete and construction in general. Now that I'm too old and crippled up to work, I'm always apprehensive when I have to hire men to work for me. All too often you get people who lack the skill and experience to do a proper job and often, they don't care how the job turns out. Then they leave behind a mess for the homeowner to clean up. When Oswaldo Minez came to look the job over prior to submitting a bid, I was very impressed with his knowledge and attitude. He told me he was the son of a father and son business and that was my background as well until my father's early death at a young age. The bid from Minez Concrete was the lowest bid and I gave them the contract. A few days later they called to say they had an unscheduled delay in their next job and they could begin work at our home. Oswaldo said they would show up at 7 AM and to my surprise the crew arrived right on time and every day thereafter. Oswaldo's father, Ramon is in charge of the actual work and I could tell right from the start that Ramon is an old school craftsman. He has trained his crew to be competent workers. Too often companies in southern California show up with a boss, who doesn't know what he is doing, and untrained men hired to work by the day. Not the Minez Company, their men are professional workers, who know their craft. On several occasions I have hired people and had to stand there all day making sure the job was done right and sometimes pitching in myself to do the job. After watching the Minez crew for a short time, I knew we were in good hands and I went back into the house. Every time I came out to observe progress there was Ramon supervising his men while working beside them to give us a first-rate job. The repairs all turned out beautifully and several people have commented upon how nice the driveway looks. To be honest, I wasn't expecting the work to go so smoothly and quickly. It was such a surprise and relief to be treated so well with a beautiful result. Oswaldo kept us informed regarding progress and his suggestions and those of Ramon contributed greatly to the final outcome. If you want a first-class experience at a fair price then hire Minez Concrete. They know what they are doing and they do the job right for a fair price. In today's world, that is rare.

Do not use this contractor. SkyWest Concrete owned by Johny A. tried to extort more money out of…read morethe project by refusing to return and complete the contracted tasks. The tasks were in a written contract signed by himself as the contractor, and myself as the homeowner for a lump sum. At this point, he tried to claim that I had changed the scope of work after we agreed to a set price, yet emails and preliminary contract documents confirmed that the scope of work never changed. He next tried to claim that because he signed my contract, I was tricking him to do more than he bargained for. He refused to return unless he was paid more money. This was unacceptable and his abandonment cost me an additional $500 more to have another contractor complete the unfinished tasks and fix poor workmanship. Specifically, when Johny was questioned about the lack of finish detail, he made an excuse and claimed a finished edge was not possible because of the type of block that was used. I don't know, did he just not care, or did he really believe what he told me? The work was not to trade standards and looked terrible. In addition, when questioned during the pour about the work not meeting county code, his defense was that he was building to "my requirements" and not to any county code. Then tried to claim that he was building to residential standards, and I was asking for commercial standards. The county standards I questioned were for residential construction. Ironically, the contract indicated that he would build to meet all applicable codes. His proposal also stated that he would comply with all federal, state and local laws and regulations, yet his excuse somehow became twisted was that it was my fault that he was not building to county requirements and I should have told him otherwise. Always an excuse that it was not his fault. There were several other project mistakes such as not ordering enough concrete, or improper rebar placement, bad elevations, but they can be overlooked. The most glaring problem was that he refused to provide a lien release for the work done and paid for. He also refused in advance to get lien releases from all the suppliers. As a work around, I offered to pay the suppliers directly, and did exactly that. I never got a lien release from him though. After he gave me the ultimatum to pay him more or he would not return, he he also stopped communication via email and ignored my further requests that he provide to me a lien release. Just before he stopped communicating, he claimed that I didn't know what I was talking about since I was not a contractor. Surprise Johny- I am a licensed California contractor and do know what I am talking about. Johny will try to get you to give him a down payment greater than 10% or $1000 maximum allowed by law. His reason: all his contractor friends do it. What about knowing the contracting laws? He is a licensed contractor after all. He will prey on the ignorance of the homeowner. The contract that he presents is severely deficient and does not meet CSLB minimum requirements and contains ridiculous provisions such as paying 60% interest. Sure, Johny came out and worked hard, but when things didn't go his way (as in getting more money), he tried to blame me. This job was not done by a professional. He was not fantastic, did not do a great job, and experience was far from amazing.
