James Rector, MD - BoulderCentre for Orthopedics

I was referred to Dr. James Rector at Boulder Orthopedics (BoulderCentre for Orthopedics) ten years…read moreago by another orthopedic center in the Vail Valley. As a highly active forty-four year-old rock climber and triathlete, I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in my left hip. I continued to do sports at a high level; however, my pain became increasingly difficult to manage, and I eventually reached out to Dr. Rector to discuss treatment options. He recommended Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) as the best procedure for my specific condition. It was extremely important to me that my surgeon understood my post goal surgical objective was to continue with a high level of activity as quickly as practical. I communicated my objectives to Dr. Rector, and we set goals to support my intentions. In October 2009, Dr. Rector performed Birmingham Hip Resurfacing surgery on my left hip with outstanding results. I immediately experienced relief from pain, and subsequently regained full range of motion. I returned to rock climbing and competing in triathlons within a year after my surgery. Six years after my BHR, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right hip, and in September 2015 Dr. Rector performed total hip replacement surgery on my right side. Once again my pain was almost immediately relieved, and my range of motion was virtually perfect. I was climbing in the gym eight weeks after surgery, biking at ten weeks, and running pain free eight months post operatively. At one year, my physical condition has returned 100 percent, and I have no restrictions on any of my former and present activities. I highly recommend Dr. Rector and his team at BoulderCentre for Orthopedics. I found and continue to feel that Dr. Rector treated me with extreme professionalism, and obviously I have complete trust and faith in his work. He and his team are dedicated, talented individuals committed to the health and welfare of their patients. I refer to Dr. Rector as my "Hero," and the elation that I feel rock climbing, running, and biking pain free is immeasurable. Most importantly he has helped me reacquire my former quality of life! He carefully listens to any concerns or questions. I recovered quickly from the surgery, and am now able to return to my active life, doing the things I enjoy. I heard my positive reviews of people who had gone to him for surgery. Now I can add my personal high recommendation for him.

This is an updated/new review & summary; consolidated from my initial 2 updates on this business…read more Based on the customer service I received from upper management, I have increased the stars from 1 to 3. **Issues I encountered: Upon moving into the new space on campus, I noticed an immediate downshift in customer service. Medical records weren't referenced appropriately and I had to provide the same information on each visit, front desk staff were oblivious to folks waiting to check in and overall just made the experience quite poor. I sent an email with detailed examples and feedback which made it to the executive director (more on this further down in review). I also encountered an issue when I was issued a Strasbourg sock for my plantar fasciitis, which I was being treated for during the course of 3-4 months. I knew going into the office visit that the sock was $30-$40 anywhere else, either in local retail stores or online at various retailers, and figured there would be markup for receiving this from my physician's office. Turns out there was a 460% markup on it,,,beyond what any reasonable person should expect. I had a conversation with both the DME company (who sets the price) and the physicians office (who failed to provide information on the cost of the item when it was so exorbitant). Long story short, I wasn't happy and expressed my severe disappointment with both parties. The feedback was also escalated up to the exec director at CUSM. **What I love about CUSM: Dr Ballentine and my Physical Therapist, Rhadika. They're both absolutely amazing. **Resolution Update as of 11/20/15: In both situations, I spoke with the executive director. He was very patient and thoroughly listened to my feedback. In terms of the initial issue I encountered (which was reported a couple months before the DME issue), he was very transparent and sincere in his feedback and assured me that these items would be addressed. His prompt reply back to my concerns and assurance that my concerns were valid and would be addressed were incredibly appreciated. Regarding the DME issue...I had escalated the issue up the chain at the company and only became more frustrated with their sincere lack of customer service (DJO Global). Upon sharing my feedback with CUSM, the ED phoned me back, listened to my concerns and escalated the issue to the account manager with whom they work at the company. After conversation with him, my billing issues were resolved and I am completely satisfied with the outcome. **Lesson: Anytime you are given any DME item from your physician's office, do not leave their office until they provide you with an exact cost of what you could (and likely will) be billed for that item...this will allow you to make an informed decision. Don't assume that the items they provide to patients aren't marked up exorbitantly and that you won't be taken to the cleaners. For customer service issues, politely and professionally share your concerns with management. You'd be surprised what can be done. **Bottom Line: I probably won't be returning to CUSM for future sports medicine treatment, however they made very concerted and productive efforts to resolve my issues. Take what you want from this and make your own informed decision.

The physical therapy department is impossible to schedule with. When you get a call back a week…read moreafter you needed help, they will schedule you in two months after you have been an agony suffering, and found someone else to help you. This is the worst scheduling and call system I've ever dealt with at a doctor's office. And to add insult to injury, the message you have to listen to is literally infuriating with the most annoying voice telling you not to call back, but they'll get back to you within one to two business days. They will not, by the way.
