The problem is their business hours: Kroner's is really only open when normal people are at work. When I actually need to buy some kind of hardware (say, on a weeknight at 6pm, or on a Saturday afternoon when I'm doing a home repair, or on a Sunday), this place is inevitably closed. Apparently their target customer is unemployed people? Or maybe Kroner's expects us to take time out of our working day to patronize their store? Business hours of, say, 11:30am to 7:30pm seven-days-a-week would make a lot more sense if Kroner's actually wanted to -- you know -- sell things to people. Because of Kroner's business hours, 90% of the time when I need hardware, I trek allll the way up to the north end of town, to Wal-Mart or Menard's or Home Depot, which are open during the hours when working people like me aren't at work.

Rarely have I ever entered Heth's without someone greeting me, or at least asking if they could help me find something. Most of the time, I end up getting a recommendation or help from one of the very knowledgeable staff. This is a true vintage hardware store- where they'll have the one right-size bolt, gasket or just the widget you need- along with a Mothers Day gift, a Christmas card, or just a six-pack of locally-brewed (Spring Grove, MN) Root beer. Most of the time, i make a conscious choice to shop at Hardware Hanks. Even if they don't have the absolute lowest price (like Wal-Mart or other big-box stores) their customer service, willingness to help, and just all-around midwestern hospitality always make me glad that I did.

I have gone into the store on several occasions looking for a specific item after searching on…read moreline. It tells me that they have stock on the item which is why I go. When I get there, I go to the specific aisle where the item is supposed to be located and there is none. Most recently a battery charger. One model showed stock in "clearance" and there was another more expensive one showing in stock that I would have purchased. I asked an employee who told me where they "should" be. I informed him that I had already looked and found none. He then said, "well, then they have been stolen"! He did go check in the back and there were none. It has been over a week and one still shows on clearance while the other does say it will be back in stock soon. The inventory is consistently erroneous, making it of no value to the store or customer!! I have worked with inventory most of my life so this is maybe more bothersome to me. I have a high capacity tool battery, with no way to charge it until they get the correct charger back in stock. With automated systems, things do not get ordered if they show on hand inventory. If this only happened occasionally, no big deal but it seems to happen more frequently than it should!!

After a few months I returned to the store and did not have a problem. Last week I received a $5 voucher so I returned once again to purchase a few items. My experience this time was great. A lady by the paint desk helped me find an item that I thought was out of stock until she showed me another section the item I was looking for was in. I also bought some paint. While checking out the store employee CHAD was pleasant, helpful and professional. He asked if I needed a paint stirrer and offered me a can opener also. He made me feel like a valued customer. The electric side would not work so I tried to start the gas pump and it would only stay running for a min or two at a time. I then plugged in the unit and was able to get the electric side working but I didn't have a cord that would cover all the areas I needed to use this around my home. I called and said I am bringing it back. They offered to come out and check on it. was never offered a different unit or for them to bring one out to me. The equipment was damaged and the lock down was not in working order. I don't know what made this unit not work but not real happy.
