I have mixed emotions about Gentiles regarding this most recent experience. In the end, it all worked out well and good. There's a new beautiful floor in my bathroom as of right now. The process in getting there was a bit rocky. First, picking out tile in the showroom (unassuming show room, with the nasty stale smell of cigarettes). The people working there have a kind of laid back personality and don't give you the hard sell. This is true EXCEPT when picking out the kind of tile which just HAS to be porcelain. Don't know why but you get a million reasons why to choose porcelain instead of another material, but NO ONE tells you that aside from diamonds, the material is one of the hardest substances on the face of the planet. No one, tells you that drilling new holes for the toilet flange will be a nightmare unless you own a diamond bit drill (who does???). Thankfully, the gentleman who did the installation was kind enough to use his own tools (and wreck them in the process) to help me get the toilet flange anchored to the floor. Second, the issue of grout. Thomas the installer will drive home the use of the neutral gray and tell you that the colors people pick of their grout never turns out the color they expect it to. This fact needs to be re-inforced by the showroom salespeople. Choosing the color for the grout, I thought I had a perfect pick. Unfortunately, after mixing the grout with the latex enhancer/sealer (recommended I get, I had no idea what it was for) the grout dries 5x lighter than the shade you think it will. It also causes the grout to dry super fast and adhere to the tile face itself before you can wipe it off with a sponge leaving residue in the nooks/crannies of the tiles. Very disappointing. Luckily, again, Thomas was patient enough to come back to help rectify the problem. He brought a grout residue remover and with a LOT of elbow grease, was able to take the remaining grout off the tiles. The product also did have a darkening effect on the grout lines which helped bring it closer to the original color I had in mind when I chose it. He also recommended a natural stone enhancer product that might further adjust the grout to the color I expected it to look like. I haven't gotten the product yet, but don't think I will need to. Mostly, I am grateful for Thomas the tile installer. He is a perfectionist to a fault (almost). But if it wasn't for him, I'd have no toilet in my bathroom and grout remnants on the tiles. The sales people at Gentiles need to be more forthcoming about what to expect when choosing porcelain tile and colored grout.

Most people know me by sight and name and I have my own wonderful dedicated sales person who takes such good care of me! Teressa is fun, kind, friendly, helpful, efficient and knowledgeable! I especially LOVE all the choices that they have in their huge store! Their selections change regularly as they bring in new materials and eye candy for me to use on projects. Also this should be noted, they have tile made from all over the world, many of the vendors are from Europe. Most other places locally only carry materials from China, which as you may imagine are just not on the same quality level. If I had one criticism it would be this, they hard working ladies are assigned to professional accounts like mine. They are not as successful helping individual people walking in off the street who have no idea what is happening. Plus with the thousands of choices and millions of combinations available in here, it can feel very daunting and overwhelming for people. If any of this sounds familiar to you then let me know and I would be happy to take you through the entire process. No matter what scale Project your thinking about planning, it is NEVER as simple as "oh I just have to go pick out some tile".

The first is simple and contemporary, the second involved an intricate pattern of colorful tiles forming wall-size images. Sara worked with us on the design, asking many questions to understand our aesthetic aims and practical needs, and offering a variety of options for us to choose among to achieve our goals. She also provided a variety of very effective ideas and solutions, considering the physical constraints of the (relatively small) spaces, to ensure the best use of spaces and to create a very open feel in both bathrooms, all in a cost-effective manner. The actual construction was done in an extremely professional manner by workers who were not only highly-skilled but also friendly, considerate of our needs, and responsive to our questions and concerns as the projects progressed. Particularly impressive, amazing really, was the tile work performed by Cliff. The colorful bathroom involved laying more than 1,000 tiles, and cutting more than 100 tiles to create the intricate design. It also involved the fitting of the many tiles to very close tolerance specifications. Cliff was both masterful and highly conscientious in completing this tile work. The result is stunning. In addition, along the way in both bathrooms, specific questions arose about alternative approaches to implementing features of the design. Cliff identified and raised these questions for us to think about, and he offered aesthetically pleasing solutions. In short, Cliff's work was thoughtful, technically masterful, and informed by his strong sense of aesthetic beauty. We are most impressed by Kitchen and Bath World for their general approach, their implementation, and the final product in renovating both bathrooms. Kitchen and Bath World has our highest recommendation.
