Seen from the central viewing area is Lower Memaloose Island Memaloose (Chinook): dead, to die, expire, decay, become rotten extinguish Originally a sacred burial site for local Indian tribes. Bodies, wrapped in skins and blankets, were placed seated in wooden open-air shelters constructed of poles, slabs, and bark. They were then surrounded with artwork, mementos, and treasures with the thought of providing comfort and wealth beyond death. This continued until March 10, 1883, when former State representative Victor Trevitt was buried on the island - the only white man to be buried there. Trevitt: "I have but one desire after I die, to be laid away on Memaloose Island with the Indians. They are more honest than whites and live up to the light they have. In the resurrection I will take my chances with the Indians." (Powers, Alfred, and Bernard Hinshaw. "History of Oregon Literature". Metropolitan Pr, 1935.) In 1882, that blasphemous opinion would've barred him from Christian society, but Trevitt's friends (including more than 90 Masons, as Trevitt was a member of their brotherhood) carried out his wish, building and laying him to rest in a large (8' square by 13' high) stone vault. And, in keeping with Trevitt's opinion, whites - who were now largely made aware of the island's purpose due to Trevitt's burial - proceeded to loot the graves on the island, taking artifacts, bones, and the skulls of the Indians as trophies or to sell. The only thing that remains on the island today is Trevitt's memorial.

Stoped by here on an early morning road trip. Restrooms were clean and the trail looked nice though we did not go on it. Highly recommend

When I moved to Portland from the east coast, "The Dalles" was directional, meaning if I was…read moredriving towards The Dalles I was heading east. I never drove past Hood River and actually went to The Dalles until a year ago and I was pleasantly surprised! Since that first time, I've been back dozens of times. As you drive east on I-84, the lush fir trees, foliage and orchards of Hood River give way to more arid land and lots of Ponderosa pines. The majestic Columbia River widens as you drive through Mosier and the scenery is incredibly beautiful. Keep driving and the basalt cliffs across the river along the Washington side are stunning. A deep sage green in the spring turning shades of off white and golden brown in the hot summer months. When you reach The Dalles, the golden mountains are the backdrop everywhere you turn. Face south and from some viewpoints, Mt. Hood is standing tall and proud. Over the past two years I've enjoyed exploring the area and have been in awe of the high desert beauty. The Riverfront Trail is a wide paved path that follows The Columbia River down to the southern bank where the river makes a dramatic 90 degree turn. In the summer a cruise ship often anchors here. On the north end by the dam, I stop and marvel at the hundreds of pelicans in the water or flying above looking down for dinner. At dusk, especially November through January during the northern migrations, dozens of eagles eagles hunt for prey then perch in the trees along the dam. From Sorosis Park high on the hill you can take in a 180 degree view of the city, the dam and river below, perfect sunset viewing from this area. I come back often so I can admire the change in seasons. Lush and green in spring, golden brown in summer and in the fall, the few trees that turn colors dot the landscape below. The downtown area has several breweries, restaurants (old saloon type vibes) and shops. Willow & Bark is one of my favorites offering stylish and affordable women's clothing and accessories. Klindts Bookstore is a must! The oldest bookstore in Oregon is charming with its hardwood floors, wooden interior and lots of books and even gift items. Go on a First Friday when stores are open late and people are wandering in and out. Or attend one of the many festivals throughout the year - an old fashioned tree lighting ceremony at a Christmas time, old car shoes, Cherry Festival, the Mural Festival to name a few. And speaking of murals, so many buildings have gorgeous murals painted on a wall, most depicting a significant part of The Dalles history and the cultures that have influenced its past and present day. The murals are painted in soft muted tones to compliment the landscape. I'm always walking around searching for them and snapping pics. Kudos to the artists and their talent. As the largest town in Wasco County, The Dalles also has the basics covered: Home Depot, Safeway, Fred Meyers, Dick's Sporting Goods, Petco, The Goodwill, The Dollar Tree, Walgreens, RiteAid, Bargain Market, Bi-Mart and a plethora of fast food places. All the usual suspects - McDonald's, Taco Bell, Subway, Papa Murphy's and more. Plus lots of food trucks, Chinese and Mexican restaurants, bakeries (Mike's Batkitchen) pubs and breweries. And of course a quaint farmers Market in Saturday mornings. When I'm out in Hood River and Mosier for extended stays, I always come out to The Dalles to hit up the stores and explore nature. I can't speak to what it's like to live here or to have grown up here, but I would assume that some love it and remain here while others may seek a place not so distant from other towns. As a visitor, I enjoy The Dalles and all it has to offer.

Winters are cold, but not as windy. Sometimes you may even get to enjoy some snow. It almost has everything you need to survive in the Gorge. Fred Meyers, Grocery Outlet, Coastal, Petco, Home Depot ect.. But forget about being part of the community. Let me just say... if you are looking for a friendly community in a small town.... The Dalles is NOT it, UNLESS... you'r religious, go to church every Sunday and your VERY patriotic. If your just looking for a cheaper place to live instead of Hood River, and don't care about community, then this might be the place for you. I've lived in a lot of different states, cities and little towns, but The Dalles is one of the hardest places I've ever lived. The attitudes of the people can really destroy a town. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with religious or patriotic people, they just have a problem with me. Within the first month of living in the Dalles, I was asked by 8 different people, what church I belonged to. I would always say the same thing..." Sorry, I don't do church." They would look at me as if I had some strange disease. It was so weird. Anyway...I am now moved away from The Dalles after a very LONG year of living there. NEVER again. The Dalles can keep their attitudes. Let bygones be bygones. .

If I could give ZERO stars I would have. Because that was the amount of work this "company" did…read more In reading the reviews, I had a similar experience. I was told initially they didn't have room for my RV and wouldn't for a couple of weeks. This continued for about a month and a half. Then they said they could come to my residence (about a 10-15 minutes drive from the shop) to give an estimate for the small fee of $300!!!! Are you kidding? When I said no, they made room. The RV had a rooftop water leak, which they knew. After we took it over to them, they let it sit out in the weather for TWO MORE MONTHS!!! Uncovered!!! In the springtime. (More to come on this) I called every week or two to check on progress and was told the same thing every time. Something to the effect of "We are backed up and are waiting on parts for the job ahead of yours, but we should get those in this week and have your trailer in the shop the week after." Ok! Great! But I heard this from March until May when I called my insurance company and told them I needed to get it to a shop that would actually work on it. I gave a courtesy call back to them to leave them a message that I was having it taken to another shop. A couple of days later I got a call from the owner who yelled at me for hanging up on his wife, (who was also the lady telling me 2 weeks for 2+months). He wanted to know what day I spoke to her so he could charge me storage fees for the trailer from that date until I picked it up. I was flabbergasted! I told him I would pick it up that day after work. He said he would have it all ready for me to pick it up. I rushed home and when I arrived at the shop, my trailer was not there! I was stunned. I was told by a nice young man, who is the son, that they trailer had been taken by another tow company to the shop I had it going to in Oregon City. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? Who gave permission for that? Not me! So, calls were made and actually STANTON TOWED IT THERE!!! No one called me to tell me this, no one asked my permission, not even a text saying not to come they had it handled. So, I asked the poor kid to confirm that the new shop had the keys (random thought) He was on the phone with his dad at the time and asked. The owner told the kid, we didn't leave keys when we dropped it off. I knew that wasn't true and told the kid. I called and spoke to the owner again. I ensured that they indeed DID have the keys as both parties that dropped off the trailer had confirmed they had left the keys. He told me they were lying. (NOT GOOD) Meanwhile, the mom, called the son and told him that IF they did have the keys, they would be in the key box in the office. I could hear her in the background of my phone call as well as over the kid's phone. He checked and guess what he found. Our keys! As we were driving out, I saw the Stanton big rig exiting the freeway, from the direction of Oregon City, towing another big rig and trailer. Our trailer was a bumper pull, no need to tow it with a big rig, unless you wanna get paid BOTH WAYS by the insurance company for going to the Portland area. I honestly don't know how they still exist. He made a point to tell me that they had been around and were an "institution" in The Dalles area. They are the ONLY shop around for big rigs. And I will definitely NEVER recommend them and drive the extra distance to go ANYWHERE else for trailer repairs. 0 out of 10. Negative stars if I could. Borderline fraudulent, but I'll leave that up to the insurance investigators. Multiple lies, pawn offs, disregard for customer service, no communication, acting without permission, doing things they weren't told to do with my trailer and on and on.
