My brother celebrated his 70th birthday at The Lyle Hotel! It was a fantastic weekend, with family and friends, together in the most stunning setting.The Lyle Hotel is in the heart of the Columbia Gorge, and has been totally redone by the owners, to create a perfect spot for reunions, weddings or just the most comfortable gathering of friends. We cooked meals together, ate outside, and ended evenings along side an amazing stone fire-pit. We hiked the Cherry Orchard trail which is just through the tunnel from the town and offers a stunning panoramic view. I think I had my best night's sleep in years, at the hotel. I recently spent three nights at the hotel. It was relaxing, the location was perfect for me and I enjoy the sound of trains. Its proximity to the train tracks makes it a problem for some. There are no rooms with bathrooms, but the six bathrooms in the upstairs hall with the ten guest rooms were plenty. There were two half baths on the lower level as well. read more

I recently enjoyed an overnight stay with a group of girlfriends and cannot wait to go back! The hotel is absolutely charming! The owners put a lot of thought into their updates. It has been beautifully restored, maintaining its historic charm while accommodating current necessities. My room was on the railroad side and I slept soundly. I'm not sure if it was the comfortable mattress, the ultra soft bedding or the beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed multiple hikes, swimming in the pristine Columbia River, cooking our meals in the fully equipped commercial kitchen, laughing by the outdoor fireplace in the beautiful courtyard, visiting the Wildlife Refuge and wine tasting. If you're looking for a unique, relaxing experience this is it!! read more

Nice historic hotel to stay at while wine tasting in the gorge. Their restaurant has a large section of starters and main dishes. We had the pot roast that was served with perfectly streamed broccoli and mashed potatoes. Bar was fun and they have a large back yard to visit in. Be aware that it is shared showers and bathroom but it wasn't an issue. I recommend this hotel. read more

The Lyle Hotel is "ok".... nothing particularly wrong here... just not our kind of place. They cater to a Yuppie crowd which seemed odd to us since Lyle is hardly a Yuppie town. The rooms are spartan.... forget cable TV, A/C and so on. We thought the prices (rooms/meals) were ridiculously high. When the Glenwood Inn closed we were badly in need of a new meal location. You get tired of Killer Burgers after a while. But we settled on the Lyle Cafe which is just more to our liking. Seattle Hipters will like the Lyle Hotel. Bikers and Blue Collar folks probably won't. read more

We enjoyed our recent stay at the Lyle Hotel. The staff and owner were super friendly. The restaurant and bar were lively on a Saturday night. The live music was a great touch. As other reviewers noted, you should be aware this is a historic hotel. The rooms are fairly small and the bathrooms are shared. Everything was very clean. The train tracks are close but we had the air conditioner on and the train did not bother me. It is close to two of our favorite Washington wineries, Cor Cellars and Syncline. If you are up for an out of the ordinary Gorge adventure this is a great choice. read more

Sadly, I cant recommend the hotel. Besides the loud train that comes by often (which they cant control) the place is just not comfortable. No A/C even though it states they have A/C. (the window rattlers, hadnt been installed yet apparently). no TV's, no breakfast, stains on carpet and furniture, restaurant was closed for the season and limited dining options nearby. We stayed here with my in-laws and the staff made us feel like family. Dinner was incredible and the hotel has some serious character. Shared bathrooms were clean and well equipped with essentials. Everyone followed Covid protocol and we felt safe, even with our toddler running around. We have fallen in love with NW Oregon/Washington. Lyle is a lovely place far from the madding crowd and is now one of our favorite places in the Gorge. Spending a day or two in wine country is so relaxing and topping it off with a stay at the Lyle Hotel is the icing on the cake. You won't meet nicer owners than Richard and Trece. This is a charming place to stay in a cute little town known for wine tasting. The décor is lovely, the owner very pleasant, the room comfortable and clean, and the food is good. We stayed a night the previous April and we were treated to a really nice dinner and phenomenal performance by a guy and his acoustical guitar. What an amazing surprise. This time around, the dining room was closed because of a private event but the hosts sent us to the adjoining bar for some adult beverages and a scrumptious dessert. Richard and his lovely wife couldn't have been nicer. When my wife accidentally left one of her favorite jackets behind, they promptly sent it back. Our room didn't have its own bath but no big deal, there are multiple shared baths available and we never had to wait. read more

This was our first stay, we received as a gift from our son. It was quaint and cozy with a warm welcome from the owner. The bar/restaurant area was to the left of entry. We arrived late evening and had a glass of wine listened to some local singing, guitar playing and then settled into comfy bed and nice soft sheets, blankets. The train is close by thus the earplugs. We are picky quite sleepers so was a little hard for us, however the place was great. We met some fellow patrons at Maryhill winery and found out the food is amazing. So next time we need to check out the food. A nice gem with lots of local art posted throughout. read more

I give them a 5 star review. Called for reservations but I couldn't round up all my dinner mates for a specific time. They said 'come on in anyway'. When we all got there it felt as if we were dining in one of our homes. The delicious aromas from the kitchen. Each of us had something different on the menu and all tasted as if they were slowly cooked all day. Pot Roast was the favorite but Polenta was hard to turn down. I'm sorry we didn't get to try the desserts but the coffee was perfect. Wine and beer selection from locals. We ate in the cozy bar where we had our very own entertainment. I wish I could give a better rating but I just can't. Charming place, nice server. We were the only table in for dinner. A few other people at the bar for drinks and the entertainment, which was very nice, but that was it. Only one vegetarian item entree, although the server did say the chef could probably fix something else up if I wanted, but I went w what was offered. Took 25 min to get the Brussels sprouts appetizer, which had a nice flavor. Vegetable rice curry for me entree was not bad, but $16 for about 1 cup of rice and a couple pieces of broccoli and spinach was ridiculous. My husband had the scallops. Came w bland rice, steamed spinach. Scallops were mushy and he said the whole plate was flavorless. He'll eat anything, but said it was the worst plate of food he'd ever ordered in a restaurant. I'd heard great things about this place years ago. Sorry to see it's changed. Doubt we'll try it again. read more

A Great Place in a Plain Brown Wrapper At first look, the Lyle Hotel doesn't look like much; just an old building on the corner next to the train tracks. We got there at the start of dinner service (4 pm) but the owner, Richard, was gracious to help us and took care of us right away. We chose to sit in the bar area, where there are plenty of tables, but they also have a very nice dining area with lots of big window with a view of the mountains next to the Columbia River. Richard took our drink orders and chatted with us about his Hotel/Restaurant as he fixed them. We also ordered dinner, (I had the jambalaya, and my spouse had the creole shrimp), and even though we were first to order from the kitchen, we didn't have to wait long. Best of all, it was delicious! Richard runs a great kitchen, and other customers we met also sang his praises. Richard and his wife, Trece, and his whole crew have embraced the history of this hotel (built in 1904) and have tried to keep the classic styling by furnishing it with antique furnishings such as carved oak headboards on the bed, or brass bed frames. And despite the rough exterior, the interior of the hotel is beautifully renovated, mostly. They still have work to do, but it's ongoing. If I were to change one thing, it would be the exterior. It isn't exactly as inviting as the inside, but you can't judge a book by it's cover. We were hungry and looking for something to eat. We passed by a non-descript cafe that luckily was closed because it led us to find a gem in the Lyle Hotel and Restaurant. The owners are so sweet and are working hard to make your stay comfortable. They both made us feel at home for our anniversary getaway. The rooms are barebones: no phones, tvs, or tissues but it's refreshing to stay away from run of the mill. The bed was comfy and the earplugs they give you are welcome as the train goes by at all hours. Walls are fairly thin but, again, nothing that was horrible. The best part about this place is the food! From apps to dessert it was all super delicious. I would go back for the braised pork and smoked polenta. I will dream about that stuff it was that good. We heard about the bad luck this location has had in the past with owners not being able to keep it up and running but we truly wish the owners all the best! read more

So the Lyle Hotel ain't the Waldorf but it's not supposed to be. You won't find pretense here but what you'll find instead is the real deal when it comes to hospitality. Maryann (you'll find her photo in the dictionary under "sweet") and Steve are the kind of hosts you dream about. I forgot the security code to get into the hotel twice and Maryann, bless her soul made sure I could get in by helping me thru the process in the wee hours of the morning. It was a lot better than sleeping in my car. I judge a place by how well I sleep, how often I smile and how much love a place rests on. The Lyle's foundation is built on love and the experience is one you'll remember as magical. Go with an open heart and the rest just shows up. What quaint and charming little hotel! The couple who runs it are lovely too and we loved their hospitality. We stayed in room #10 which is above the bar and the walls are a little thin but they provide ear plugs so we slept okay. There is free coffee in the restaurant in the morning and even though the bathrooms and showers are shared with the other lodgers, they make up for it with hotel provided EO Naturals shampoo, conditioner, body gel, and lotion. The showers all have large, adjustable shower heads and each room comes with bathrobes. The hotel is very clean and tidy and the restaurant food is to die for. The pub is pretty darned cute too and we would like to come back when the weather is nicer so we can take advantage of the patio. This is a good base-camp for hiking and wine tasting, which we did a lot of and loved coming home to this gem. read more

This place is such a gem! We stumbled on the Lyle Hotel during a Hood River festival when another hotel could not be found. The serendipity could not have been better. The town of Lyle is still in transition from a insular community to one which has soon to be discovered. The owners of the hotel are ahead of the curve. The rooms and public areas have been thoughtfully restored, the food is top-notch by most any comparison. The owners are earnest in their commitment to making their place a true destination. We had a quiet (despite the muffled rumble of nearby trains passing) and enjoyable evening in a small-well appointed room. No TV, phone or in-room bathroom made our stay both intimate and a pleasant diversion from the cookie-cutter hotel experience we might have had elsewhere. Go with a sense of open adventure and come back, like us, with fond memories. We'll be returning. read more

This was our first stay! My husband born and raised here, so we thought that we would spend our money here! We thought we would support local. Hotel was very charming! Rooms clean ! Customer service well?? We tried to check in early but no one was around and at first thought it was closed down ! Tried calling several times no answer! Finally we got a hold of someone! We went and ate dinner then drove over there. When we got there we stood in lobby for 10 minutes and No one helped us so we rang the bell no one came finally we asked a women in the bar to help us and she said just a minute! We waited 10 more minutes then we went back in bar and another girl came to help us ! She didn't act like she knew what she was doing she confused about how to check us in and when she gave us our key to the room she said I am not good at directions but I can take you up and show you! Our room was top of stairs to the right! So we got to hear everyone come up stair and go down all night! Including the children that were allowed to play on them. I was disappointed in customer service the most ! We could not even tell who worked there? Felt like with a small hotel the staff would have been more friendly. At 330 in morning another guest came in and they sat in lobby for a hour and talked and laughed Usually I read reviews but we wanted to try this lesson learned ! I think the hotel is great ! It's cute and clean and could be a big thing if the staff was friendly and you could tell who worked there!! If check In is from 4 to 8 some one should be at the front desk greeting and making sure you get what you need! read more

Horrible experience here. The waitress (Jordyn, I think) was sweet, but incompetent. The hostess was concerned, but inefficient. First, they were out of the wine we ordered. It happens and if that were the only problem, I'd give them more stars. Then, the waitress suggested a wine, but wouldn't bring us a taste because they didn't have an open bottle of it, so she brought a taste of a "comparable" wine. My husband thought it was fine, I thought it was pretty poor. Then, we waited for our food...and waited...and waited...for a full hour and a half. At one point we asked if they had forgotten our order since three (count 'em, three) tables that came in after us were served before us. We were told that, no, they were slammed and our order was next. After that, the waitress came back to ask us what our order was. Before long, the hostess came to tell us that she and the waitress had been using the computers to put in orders at the same time and somehow our order got lost. They told us our wine would be comped as well as our dessert. Did it occur to either of them that we were hungry and maybe they should have brought us an appetizer to help with the wait? NO! Hunger and anger were getting to me and my husband and we started to argue until we realized we weren't really mad at each other, we were mad at the waitress and hostess. My husband's steak was overcooked and his potatoes were cold, but he was afraid of what would happen if he sent them back. My Cajun shrimp were fine and that's the best I can say for them. My anxiety over the situation gave me a stomach ache (not good for someone with an ulcer) so I passed on dessert. My husband asked for a sundae---vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and blueberries. The ice cream was of inferior quality, the kind you get in gallon containers to feed a large group, the sauce tasted like Hershey's syrup, if even that good, and there were about 10 blueberries, or less, and no whip cream, garnish or cherry on top...just a bowl of ice cream. Apparently, you cannot cancel a reservation without a $25 fee. This is not documented anywhere, not in the reservation confirmation, not communicated when I cancelled, and not on their website. I had to cancel my trip and therefore my stay at the hotel 6 days prior to my arrival date and was still hit with a $25 fee. It may be a charming place, from what I've heard; however, I will never stay there based on my experience. read more

We stayed last Saturday. Our meal was outstanding. I had the sauteed scallops with oyster mushrooms. They were perfect, just lightly browned at the edges, and not overcooked. We pasta was cooked perfectly, and didn't feel heavy, as pasta often can. Dinner prices were very reasonable, considering the quality of the food. I love the vibe of these old hotels, and can put up with walking across the hall to the bathroom for the reasonable price and friendly staff. read more

This could be a 5 star rating (hotel only, not restaurant) for me with just a small amount of alterations in how the hotel functions. If they could just set out a muffin or the like for a morning starter, that would be great. They do put out some oranges and apples, and there's Kuerig coffee (no cream) available, but at the price point for a night's lodging a $2 muffin, or a small bagel seems reasonable. The facility itself is charming, and if you don't mind going down the hall to shower and use the restroom you're set. One review said that the place was a bit noisy if you're room is over the bar. We were, it wasn't. It was game 6 of the NBA Finals, and the noise was minimal. (Maybe the crowd in the bar was made up of front running Warriors fans?) In any case, The Lyle is pretty quiet overall. The service at both the hotel and the restaurant was warm, if a bit harried. Other than a knockout salad the dinner was middling. I don't mind the rumbling of trains all night long. If you do, all things considered, this is a 3 star rating. read more

We recently spent 2 nights here short notice. The building is beautiful, and the owners have done a great job updating it. Although we see the points of the previous reviewers concerns (yes, the dinner service was a bit slow and our waitress was not exactly attentive or efficient), this very minimal negative was far outshadowed by the beautiful building, outdoor dining area, cute and cozy pub, and the overall welcoming feel of this place. The owners are wonderful. They were quick to help with anything we needed, and even offered to keep the restaurant open for us to eat as we were arriving late. When they saw that we had two little kids with us, they quickly found a twin mattress and a futon for us to put on the floor in order to accomodate the kids. (Our dog was welcomed, as well). LOVE this place, and would definitely go there again. read more

We had a wonderful time in Lyle winetasting, hiking and spending the night here. First off, I have to admit that I did not pay attention on the website when it mentioned (or did they) that the rooms were not complete with bathrooms. Showers and toilets are shared with other guests. I did have some difficulty on the website figuring out how to book my room, but I finally drilled down deep enough to figure it out. The place is new and they are still working out the kinks. We checked in and were shown our room by the owner. New owners this year and they are working hard to bring the place up to the level that people visiting the wineries expect. The hotel is an old railroad hotel (right next to the tracks). We had a quieter room away from the tracks but with no view which was fine. I would suggest a little artwork in the room though :) The place has great historic charm. We settled into the bar and had a few glasses of wine. The owner was extremely knowledgeable about the wines in the region and we enjoyed learning from here. We ordered dinner, bacon wrapped shrimp with garlic mashed potatoes. One of the best meals I have had in a long time!! The husband is a chef and it shows. The fifth star will happen when they finish up all the improvements they are working on. Definitely will be back!! read more

I just returned home from a 3 night stay at the Lyle Hotel and couldn't be happier. The accommodations are very "Bed & Breakfast" like (without the breakfast, except Sunday) and you can tell that the owners love what they are doing and it shows. I only got a chance to eat dinner there once and really enjoyed it. The asparagus appetizer was fantastic, as were the jambalaya and blueberry bread pudding. I wish I could have had a chance to try their pulled pork sandwich because I heard other patrons raving about it. I guess that gives me something to look forward to next time read more

The food is ALWAYS amazing. And everyone is cheerful and helpful. It's a bonus that the outdoor area is a charming place to enjoy dinner, drinks and entertainment. Food might take a little bit of time (according to other reviews), but the owner/chef is creating beautifully crafted food that's worth every minute you wait. Have a drink and enjoy the charm of the building and surrounding area. The view from our table of the sunset was stunning.
