Despite not really needing a car to explore during our stay, there is ample, well-lit parking available. We always felt safe. Every staff member we encountered - from front desk to housekeeping to breakfast staff-was friendly and helpful. We were greeted with smiles from everyone. It is obvious that this property prides itself on customer service. They were very accommodating to my request for a late check-out because my son's windsurfing lesson was delayed due to wind conditions. We appreciated their flexibility and understanding very much. Our room and the entire property were immaculately clean. The hallways were wide and well-lit. Our bathroom and sleeping area were spotless and bright. The bathroom was well-stocked with towels and toiletries. The beds, pillows, and linens were super comfortable. The breakfast area was also neat and clean. There is an indoor pool and hot tub, as well as a gym, water bottle filling station, and small market. The daily free breakfast had a wide, varied selection, and the food was delicious - somehow so much more so than the usual free hotel breakfast. The afternoon's warm cookies were plentiful. One afternoon, there was even a beautiful bowl of fresh cherries offered. The hotel itself was quiet, but the traffic on the nearby highway was loud at night. However, the hotel supplies free earplugs and white noise making fans to help you sleep. The staff seems to think of everything to make their guests feel at home! The attention to detail is to be commended. I highly recommend the Hampton Inn and Suites Hood River. I look forward to returning in the future!

The front desk keeps very limited hours, so be sure to arrive early enough to be able to check in. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful, and check-in was very prompt. I was very surprised by and appreciative of the no-charge room upgrade when I checked in (bigger room than what I'd reserved). There are also electric vehicle chargers on-site, if you have the need. Parking is the only real drawback, that being that there are very few parking spaces in the paved lot, so most visitors' vehicles needed to park in the dirt / gravel area behind the hotel. Prices are far more reasonable than the hotel right next door.

The Retreat's massive original beams are truly something to behold. Finishes are stunning, yet have an old-world vibe, reminiscent of a European stone inn, but with high-end, classy finishes and elite appliances. We have fond memories of this space when it was formerly a quaint micro brewery; now we're staying in the converted brew works that is ideally located in the heart of Hood River. If you're not familiar with this town, you will be equally blown away by the sensational geology and twin volcanos separated by the Gorge itself. The owners are deserving of world-class design and construction awards and for this phenomenal lodge. Combined with their concierge level of service, Horsefeathers is a true gem.

On the one hand, the grounds are lovely, with some nice views of a waterfall cascading down to the Columbia River. The hotel has nice "bones" and the interior incorporates a lot of Art Deco touches, although we didn't agree with every design choice. There's a cool, old-fashioned hand-operated elevator that needs a staff member to operate. My biggest issue had to do with the cost of the room in late October given that the view of the river was very limited by small-ish windows and trees. Overall, just not worth the $325/night rate. The hotel appears to be a prime destination for weddings, which could be fantastic if the weather cooperates. It is located just west of small Hood River, which appears to lack much in the way of fine dining, but does have a number of boutiques, a great brewpub (Pfriem), and a great coffee/breakfast place (Kickstand). For us, given all of the other waterfalls along the Gorge, I think we would have been just fine with a less expensive, less notable hotel for the night.

The room (The Gorge Room) was ok, and had a Murphy bed (as advertised), but it sure felt like a full not a queen size. Very small. Also, again as advertised, the bathroom for this room is down the hall. This wasn't a problem and we expected it (again, as advertised). However, upon getting into the shower, both the diverter handle and water pressure/temp handle came right off! Fortunately, I was able to get both back into the slots internally and take showers, but that should definitely be fixed/replaced. Overall this is a very old property with lots of charming design and decor. Just be aware that this may come with challenges, and older reviews make it sound better than it is. It certainly isn't living up to its older reputation. It is also largely an unstaffed property. I did see a lady working in back and spoke to her briefly, but other than that, no one.

Sakura Ridge provided a very comfortable stay with everything that we needed to unplug and relax. There were many small details that we appreciated- a beautifully designed and very clean room, comfortable bed and sheets, heated floors, snacks and drinks in the common area (hot cocoa, tea, soda, popcorn), and guidebooks, cookbooks, and maps for guests. The breakfasts were delicious and carefully prepared by Deanna. We had fresh lamb sausage, cherry tomato and goat cheese tart, scrambled eggs with chives, and sorrel salad. The second day, we had a cream cheese omelette, ham wrapped asparagus, and fresh blueberry scone. Deanna also made a berry smoothie both mornings. John was very kind and taught my husband how to feed their lambs on the second morning. We met him at 8am and my husband got to feed 3 lambs at one time! I have to say, it was a unique and fun experience. We stayed in the Orchard Room, which was great. It was built as an addition in 2007, so it has a separate entrance and felt very private. The bathroom was well appointed with a marble walk-in shower and soaking tub. We had a private balcony overlooking the chickens and lambs on the farm, and it offered an AMAZING view of Mt. Hood. One of the best things about Sakura Ridge is that it's situated on a farm with animals (lambs and chickens) and fruits (pears, apples, peaches, plums, and berries) and vegetables. We highly recommend staying here and would love to return in the summer.
