I have stayed at many, many B&Bs across the country. Husum Highlands gets a "2.5 Stars" from me overall. It was a "5" in some ways. My boyfriend, his son, and I stayed in the room & alcove on the top floor one recent Saturday summer night. The inn was completely booked.
Positives - 5 stars! Fabulous view and lovely house and grounds. I have never seen a B&B in such a nice location. The house is adorable and charming, as were the upstairs rooms we stayed in. It reminds me of Anne of Green Gables. The drive is scenic. I love Epu, the little grey cat; he just seems to fit right in. They have done a lovely job at this site. The beds are extraordinarily comfortable. Carol and Jerry, the innkeepers, were cordial.
Negatives - 1 star: I have never stayed at a B&B where they charge your card the minute you walk in the door. It was off-putting to get a handshake and then a hands-out for the credit card. I have also never stayed at a B&B where you have to pay to borrow a DVD; especially when the DVD player in your room isn't hooked up correctly and YOU have to fix it because the innkeeper comes up and says "I'm an old man; I don't know how to work this sh*t!" My BF's son was told by Carol that DVDs in a certain pile were free, but when Jerry saw that he had the DVD (when he came up to fix the DVD player), he asked him to pay $2, and then put the $2 straight into his wallet. Tacky. Though the beds were very comfortable, I kept being woken up by the loud banging of the bathroom door/latch from the guests in the room below us. My BF thought that it was nice there was candy in each room, but only one piece for each guest. No surplus candy here! Beautiful candles in each room - but no matches?! There was a large spiderweb hanging from the light fixture above my bed. Then the sun came in at 5:00 am. There was no way to block the light coming in the sunburst window. =(
Probably the most disappointing/frustrating part of the visit for me was breakfast. Breakfast was served in the kitchen at an extremely crowded table. I thought we would be served in the large and beautiful dining room, which remained empty. My place mat was dirty with what appeared to be an old dried ketchup smear - yuck! For breakfast we were served Belgian waffles with almonds, an herbed omelet, ham, fresh fruit, orange juice, and coffee. Nice, but nothing spectacular compared to similarly-priced B&Bs where I have stayed. In my confirmation email a few days prior and again the night we checked in, Jerry asked if we had any dietary restrictions. I requested "no nuts" both times, but was served Belgian waffles with sliced almonds. Everyone else seemed to enjoy them, and they were beautifully cooked, but when you've asked twice for something and you're hungry, it was frustrating. I was able to pick around the almonds, but thank goodness it is a "dislike" and not an allergy!
Taken individually, my complaints might seem minor. But when you pay what we were paying, they add up. Lovely spot, but we will probably not return. read more
