The pupusas (savory filled corn cakes) here are expertly shaped (no cracks) and beautiful. Ask for extra curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and tomato salsa; it cuts out the richness of the pupusas. We started with the ensalada, which was refreshing and had just the right amount of sweetness. For pupusas, we ordered the revueltas, loroco con queso, and frijol con queso. We tried both corn and rice dough, and honestly, both were delicious. My personal favorite was the frijol con queso with the rice dough- so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The yuca frita was exactly how it should be: crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. The chicharrón was cooked perfectly as well, and the homemade green salsa that the sweet lady helping us made was the perfect addition. She was so kind, welcoming, and always had a friendly smile, which made the experience even better. Another thing that really stood out was how clean the restaurant is. My husband stumbled upon this hidden gem while happily searching for a place to eat in Pasadena. Nestled next to a busy In-N-Out, this vibrant yellow building immediately caught our eye. Stepping inside, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who quickly invited us to seat ourselves. The restaurant is moderately spacious, seating around 20 people, but it maintains a cozy and inviting atmosphere with more seating outside the restaurant. The cleanliness and seamless communication among the staff created a sense of care and attentiveness that set the tone for a wonderful experience. Our culinary journey began with a feast of Salvadorian classics: Beef Soup and an assortment of pupusas, including jalapeño and cheese, carne asada and cheese, and plain cheese. The Beef Soup was an extraordinary highlight--a symphony of flavors that danced in every spoonful. The broth was rich and deeply satisfying, infused with tender cuts of beef, perfectly cooked vegetables, and yuca root, which added a unique Salvadorian twist compared to the usual potatoes found in Mexican beef soup. Each ingredient was thoughtfully prepared, creating a comforting, hearty dish that I couldn't stop savoring. The pupusas were equally spectacular. Each one was generously filled, freshly prepared, and bursting with flavor. The jalapeño and cheese offered a delightful kick, while the carne asada and cheese provided a savory indulgence. The cheese pupusa was pure, simple perfection. Every bite reflected the care and love the chef poured into these creations, making them irresistible. Accompanied by the Salvadorian horchata--distinctly nutty and refreshing--it was a pairing that truly awakened my taste buds. I was so impressed that I returned not once but twice in the following days to explore more of their menu! On one visit, I tried their Chicken Soup, which was just as comforting and flavorful as the Beef Soup. On another, I delved into their breakfast options, which proved to be just as addictive as their dinner offerings. For breakfast, my husband ordered the Chilaquiles, and I opted for the Chiapas Breakfast, accompanied by a refreshing Jamaica and a lightly sweetened lemonade. The Chilaquiles were a revelation--the tortilla chips remained perfectly crisp, even under a generous layer of their exquisite sauce. Topped with softly cooked eggs, the dish was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors that had my taste buds singing. Meanwhile, the Chiapas Breakfast featured two eggs bathed in a luscious tomato and bell pepper sauce, paired with creamy black beans and sweet, caramelized plantains. Each element complemented the others beautifully, creating a dish that was both satisfying and memorable. What truly sets this restaurant apart is its ability to blend family-oriented warmth with exceptional culinary execution. Every dish felt like it was made with love, and the attention to detail in every bite was undeniable. The owner and servers exuded genuine hospitality, ensuring that our experience was nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're craving authentic Salvadorian cuisine, a refreshing agua fresca to go, or simply a place to enjoy a heartfelt meal, this restaurant has you covered. I'm beyond grateful my husband discovered this place--it's a treasure I'll be returning to again and again. read more

We discovered Cabrera's during the almost 2 year time span when our then go-to for Mexican, La Fiesta Grande in So. Pasadena, closed and their new location on Glenarm/Marengo opened. We tried a multitude of Pasadena places, including Mijares, Casa del Rey, Margaritas and El Torito (gringo!). Cabrera's was our fave, with a better location for us vs. La Fiesta. Their menu extended beyond the "ordinary", and I liked their plating/presentation. A slice of cucumber or orange adds a lot to a mound of shredded lettuce garnish. Mind you, our family fave for +40 years is still El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights, but that's quite a shlep. Cabrera's has also been around awhile (40 years) and now has 3 locations--Arcadia (the original), Pasadena and Duarte. All are owned/co-owned by 2 families, one named Cabrera. The Pasadena location is near the corner of Lake and Orange Grove, next to popular breakfast spot The Reyn, with which it shares a rear parking lot. All locations have a full bar. I have ordered off the regular menu, breakfast menu and Happy Hour bar menu. The breakfast menu is mostly offered on weekends when they open at 10 am, but you can ask for it weekdays at 11 am opening. My fave dish is the chilaquiles. As stated before, their all-day menu has some unique items, but I stick with the more gringo choices. Their chile rellenos used to be quite large, with the poblano chile clearly visible. They're a bit smaller and more generic now, but still fine. We order it as a 2 or 3-item combo or a la carte. Note their complimentary chips and salsa comes with 2 salsas, one red and one dark green (smoky and quite spicy). Lately we have been coming here for their Tuesday or Wednesday specials. Tuesdays is of course Taco Tuesday, and I love their crispy beef tacos. They have a special avocado salsa on Tuesdays. Every Wednesday, a certain dish is 50% off for the entire month if you order a soft drink, a great value. The most recent specials were fish tacos and steak or chicken fajitas, both delish. As AARP members, we usually arrive at 11 am opening. Inevitably either Christian and/or Guillermo, scions of the 2 founding families, are on duty then (Christian is the Pasadena manager)--shout outs to both of them!
