Me and another person walk into Mel's to get some breakfast. We are greeted by the pleasant hostess who seats us on the right section, all the way in the back by the window. Which, for me, was great. I really enjoy a peaceful breakfast. I mean, who doesn't enjoy a peaceful breakfast? I'll tell you who doesn't enjoy a peaceful breakfast--the owners and management of Mel's Diner. Let me continue. As we're seated, our very pleasant and polite hostess asks what we would like to drink. After we put in our orders, we quietly sat down. Now, in our top section, there is one table that was sitting right next to us, and then there was another table that was towards the kitchen entry door, completely Kitty-corner and across the room taken up by two very loud talking females, one being a waitress. To my surprise these loud females pause their conversation. As our waitress casually slides her chair out from under her and barely made an effort to come over to our table with the saddest wet napkin greeting I've ever heard in my life--no enthusiasm, 0 personality. But hey, I get it; some people have their off days. We order, and we proceed to wait. I completely finished my drink, and my empty glass sat on my table as I waited. Now, this was the entertaining part. As I'm waiting for anybody to come by and notice my empty drink, I can't help but hear these extremely loud females pick back up talking about personal business. The whole time they're gossiping, our drinks are empty, we're waiting for food, and can't have our own conversation because they're being too loud. Now I'm at a point where I've listened to this annoying conversation enough, and honestly, the level of low-class professionalism was just kind of grossing me out. So I politely get up and ask these two classy females, one of them being my server, if they could please keep the volume down. After saying that, I received an opened mouth blank stare for an awkward amount of time before they picked up their jaws, and one slowly said, "Oooooookayyyyyyy." I walk back to my table, and I can actually hear them legit trash-talking me. Hold on, it gets better. CASH ME OUTSIDE girl (our waitress) is now pissed off because I asked her and her friend to be quiet. So she comes over to my table with some Maury Povich attitude, drops our food off, and turns around and walks away. Not going to lie, I was pretty hesitant to eat that meal; so we ate very little. As soon as that waitress sat back down, the trash-talking continued wich me and my friend looked at each other and laughed.. A while goes by and the two finish screaming at each other and go to check out. As I'm eating, the loudest oldest woman, you know the one who sounds like she smokes four packs of Marlboros a day. As she was checking out, she started to come over towards our table in her true religion bedazzled up cowgirl jeans barking loudly in the center of the restaurant "if they can laugh why can't I be loud they're loud why can't I be loud." No joke, I thought I was in a Northern Little Rock gas station at 12:30 at night. It felt so trashy. We were paying our bill and trying to talk to the lady at the counter about the waitress's attitude when CASH ME OUTSIDE comes to the counter on some Jerry Springer baby mama drama energy. Immediately starts to argue with us about the level of her volume. No apology, she got mad at us that we got mad at her about the level of her conversation. So I asked who the manager is here, and guess what? CASH ME OUTSIDE girl says "I'm the manager." I literally laughed out loud in her face. I said well then who's the owner JOE DIRT? She said the woman that I was talking to is my mom, and she's the owner. As I threw my hands up in the a with pure excitement, I couldn't help but declare, "Well, that explains it all! Having a conversation like that and neglecting your customers would never stand unless mommy and daddy own the business. We walked in and were sat immediately. We got our coffee quickly. And that, my friends, is all I can say positive. The servers were literally slamming our cups down upon every refill. The wait for the food was an hour. Every time we looked up in the full restaurant, only 1 or two tables were eating at a time. The food was cold by the time we got it. The taste was ok. I asked the waitress to microwave mine but the rest of the table didn't bother. The ambiance was the run off the mill grease spoon in a strip mall. My husband & I went to Mel's Diner for breakfast last Sunday on our way home from a motorcycle rally. It took more than an hour to get our food. The food was very good, until I got to the last few bites & found a hair on my plate. This diner was advertised to have a "50's" theme & decor. The only thing that could be considered "50's", in my opinion, were the 8 x 10 framed photos of cars from that era hung haphazardly on the walls. Driving thru and spent the night in Mountain Home and based on the review about the car in the parking lot with the "offensive" bumper stickers, we decided to eat at Mel's. It is Sunday and it looks like most of the town was there for breakfast. Food was great, service was great. Just an fyi, Mel's is in a strip center with a large parking lot, so it's possible the person with the "offensive" car might work at another business in the center. But regardless, food was great, and that should be the only reason to eat, or not eat there. We eat at Mels every so often and the food went downhill months ago. Two weeks ago we were going to eat here after a vet appointment. Noticed a car with the worst stickers all over the rear window stating pro abortion, anti Church and Jesus, pro witchcraft and lesbian, BLM, etc. pulling into the parking lot. After our appointment we went to Mels and that same car was still there. We didn't go into eat because we had the feeling this person worked there. Fast forward two more weeks, we have another vet appointment. Saw the same car in the Mels lot on the way to vet and then the same car when we were about to go eat at Mels today. This time I called and talked to a manager asking if this is the type of employee they hire as we will not support it. She said they have employees that drive a white vehicle. I told her it had so many terrible stickers that I am surprised it does get damaged or run off the road in Mountain Home as this is a conservative town. She then said she was uncomfortable answering my question about if that car belongs to an employee, even though I assured her we are not a problem at all. We were told if we are uncomfortable with eating there we are welcome to go elsewhere. That was all we wanted to know. I get the feeling the car belongs to the manager or employee as I was hung up on when I said I was going to write this review. You go woke you go broke. I know everyone has the freedom of speech but we have the freedom to not give a red cent to any business that supports such hate and evil. I was at Mel's yesterday for breakfast and I have to agree with other low and not too glowing reviews. When I sat down, I told the middle-aged waitress I needed to order for my friend who was coming and short on time. She muttered "uh huh," took our drink orders and left. She went off and took another table's drink order. A kid comes over and asks if the waitress got our drink order and I told him I needed to order for my friend. Then they both disappeared for 10 minutes. The waitress comes will drinks for both tables, then goes to a table that JUST sat down and took their order. By the time she came back to the table, my friend was there and placed her own order. The food came out fairly quick, but my friend still had to inhale it and go back to work. The food was fine, like always, but the whole thing was frustrating. Bobby Sue's is still hands down the best diner in town for breakfast. read more

I have been eating here frequently for about 20 years and have never had bad service or a bad meal. I have always ordered a breakfast meal, generally coffee, water, and either an omelet (various) or the corned beef hash and eggs, for the side I get wheat toast. Lately I haven't been there as often as I used to, but that's due to circumstances in my life and becoming somewhat of a hermit on weekends which is really the only time I've eaten there (ie: when I don't have to work). When I do make it in, there's still one waitress around my age that is always up for an update (learn how things are going, why haven't seen me for a bit) and I've known her for more than a decade now through my attendance. As for the food, like I said I've never gotten a bad meal. I admit that sometimes they have a cook that doesn't know how to make scrambled eggs (take a fork and whisk eggs before you cook, not cook eggs and then chop them up), but otherwise everything has always been great. Good service and good food at a fair price, you can't ask for much more from any restaurant. read more

Best fries!!! Huge portion with Monte Cristo sandwich. I asked if Reuben came on rye. Told ''yes' so when I got my order, I had white bread, Swiss, no sauce, no kraut. Inquiring about what I was served, waitress said, "I thought you ordered pastrami." Now, I'm really confused! We had a conversation about rye!! So rather than wait for correct order, I asked for sauerkraut & it was provided. THEN our ticket was charged for a Reuben AND a side of sauerkraut . We spoke with three people - kindly & quietly - before someone came out of the kitchen to resolve it. BTW, it's hard to find hot tea properly served. I had a mug of hot water, an extra serving of hot water in a teapot, lemon & honey on a saucer and got a spoon. All good! The tiny greeter was friendly & efficient. read more

Good breakfast, great friendly service. We are new to the area and felt very welcome. Definitely will be our "go-to" place for breakfast.

We arrived a little after lunch, was told where to sit. They took our drink and orders fairly quickly. Then the wait began. How long does it take to make 2 burgers and a pork meal? We waited at least 40 minutes. They finally bring my kid's burger and the shape wasn't even close to a patty and 1/2 the size of the burger bun! Melted cheese was draped over this weird meat shape. The waitress tried to say it's a kid's size burger. I gave her the, "You've got to be kidding me" look. She returned with a real size burger patty. Should a kid get a sad looking patty because he is a kid? While waiting for our meals, happen to notice the ceiling was dripping from condensation right beside us over the dining area. Mel's used to be a good place to eat breakfast. Looks like that has changed. We went in on a Saturday in between peak breakfast and lunch and it took over a hour to get our food. No, they weren't busy. No, they did not appear to be understaffed. They served us after other diners who came in after us. And my friends food came to the table cold. That's my 'never coming back' trigger. Cold breakfast food after waiting over an hour...just no excuse for that. read more

Confession: I'm a pushover for a good simple diner serving a basic breakfast. Mel's fits the bill. Bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee. All wonderful. Great service - attentive but not intrusive. Very friendly. Also, lots of regulars, so it's obviously consistent. Highly recommended. read more

We had not stopped in Mel's since a bad experience ten years ago. First we gave the waiter our dinner order, five minutes later he came back and informed us they did they were out of vegetable salad, then he came back and said they were out of potato salad. The fish dinner was okay and the waiter was not at fault, so we left him the customary 20 % gratuity. We went up to the cashier and paid our bill, when the cook comes out to put a container by the register that said "tips for the cook" YES that is why we had not returned for ten years and will not be back. If the owner cannot pay the cook a fair wage like other restaurants. Prices on menu had been raised over menu prices on internet. read more

Middle of the road good. It is not bad but by no means is it the best in my opinion. I had a situation today that rubbed me the wrong way as far as customer service but it really didn't worry me. I ordered two eggs, hash browns, biscuit, gravy, & hamburger patty. When I received my breakfast the hamburger patty was extremely over cooked. I considered it burnt and it is hard to burn a hamburger patty! Any way I was finished eating by the time another one came out of the kitchen. When she sat the new one down in front of me I looked at it then the lady and stated I am finished eating now I don't want it. She said well you are going to pay for it so you may as well take it with you. I said fine I can feed to a dog. I should have no said anything to her I should have ask to speak to manager. It's OK. I used to eat here often when I lived here. I paid them a visit when I was here this past Thanksgiving and noticed they may be slipping. I had the chicken fried steak, eggs, sausage and biscuits and gravy. Biscuits and gravy were good. Eggs weren't over medium and were still runny. Chicken fried steak was over cooked on the outside, pink in the middle. Hash browns were soggy and gooey. Waitresses weren't very friendly with me, but were with the regulars. Arrived at Mel's Diner this morning 08/17/19 at 10:24 am clearly the hours on the door stated 6 am - 2 pm. However at 10:24 am they have doors locked with customers inside?? Sign inside door read "YES WE ARE OPEN" tried the door twice it was locked my husband even tried after me. We just saw a group of young men come out of the restaurant it was so confusing however as we arrived at our vehicle one of the workers of the restaurant unlocked the door and let the customers out as they were finished. This is the best breakfast place in Mountain Home. Never had anything wrong and my food has always come out great. The wait staff had always been fun and energetic but not to the point it's annoying. A group of local veterans eat breakfast there regularly. All in all if you want breakfast all the way up till 2pm Mel's is the place to go. read more

We came here for the first time based on the good reviews...Unfortunately, we weren't super impressed and we're trying to figure out what everyone was talking about. When we walked in we were greeted by super friendly waitresses and that is a plus! But the floors were really dirty and stayed that way the duration of the time we were there. The tile floors looked to have not been mopped in a long time and we're sticky. There were several dirty tables with plates and glasses throughout the restaurant that stayed way longer than they should.. I could understand if it were busy, but it was not. It took way too long for our food to get out (about 40 mins) when we did not have a difficult order. The restroom was pretty clean, but the restaurant itself was not. The "Italian pasta salad" tasted like vinegar and sugar mixed then poured over some undercooked noodles. It was not edible...I wanted to like this place, but the mediocre food and dirty restaurant is all I could see. I want to say again that the women working there were very sweet ladies and I did see them working on filling table items and running food. read more

I almost didn't go there because when I looked up Mel's Diner on my GPS, it said it was closed, but it was open. All in all the food was delicious but not worth the 1 1/2 hour wait. read more
