Great service. Got coffee and pop shortly after ordering and our lunch hardly too any time to make. Serving size is very good relative to price and their fries are wonderful. Friendly staff and great atmosphere! A must try if you like diners. read more

I had to make a quick 2day visit to a client in Kitchener so I stuck with places I've been to rather than experiment. If there is any one thing I've learned about Canadians it is this - they really know how to make a great cup of coffee. Finding a restaurant that can satisfy a Texan's appetite and tastes is a little harder-but not much. At least in areas close to the US border. This part of Ontario borders New York so get ready for yankee food. I think Mel's must be managed by US expatriates because it's as close to Elmer's as any place I found. I have traveled and worked throughout Canada (6 provinces) and while I truly love this country it is only in the two coastal areas, Ontario and British Columbia that I find similar tastes to home. Mel's makes a great breakfast (the only meal I had a chance to eat this trip). I'm avoiding writing about airport food for a time when I feel nasty. Since retiring I don't get back to Canada often, usually to fulfill a promise but when I do, I know where to find a good meal. My go to entree is always corned beef hash and eggs. How much more British can you get? read more

One of the worst dining experiences in recent memory. Ordered eggs benedict, they arrived cold. not lukewarm, but actually below room temperature. Sent them back and the second try was as bad as the first. My dining companions salad had lettuce in it that was wilted with the edges starting to rot, and cucumber that was so old is was shriveled and like rubber. I can't in all honesty even give it a 1 star rating, but the system here doesn't allow me to give it a zero read more

I've been going to Mel's Diner for 15 years now (minus the last 2 since the fire). Up until this past weekend, if anyone asked me where to get brunch in K-W, I would say Mel's, hands-down. I had years of good food, great memories and decent service. Until Sunday. I decided to bring a bachelorette party to the new Mel's on Westmount for a nostalgic brunch. I called Friday to try to make reservations, since we had a group of ten, but was told they don't take reservations on the weekend. We arrived at 10:50, waited 40 minutes for a table and were seated on the patio. That's not an issue, since Sundays are busy and there were a lot of us. What was an issue is that it took us another 30 minutes for our first round of drinks, that we didn't get served our food until 12:45, that our waitress made no effort to communicate with us, that one meal didn't arrive, that food was cold when it did arrive, that the manager on duty was hostile when approached about the situation, and that when we got our bill, it said, "Nasty Customers" at the bottom. If you think that you are going to have the same experience that the old Mel's provided, think again. The service at new Mel's is nothing like it used to be, and it seems that they're just coasting on reputation. Thanks for all the memories, Mel's. I won't be back. read more

Was so thrilled to get brekky and substitute potatoes for a fruit cup for only $.99! Unheard of! Usually it costs $4.00 plus! The music was quiet enough that you could carry on conversations! Wonderful experience! read more

Mel's Diner - Biggest pot of tea I've ever been given at a restaurant! I'm ecstatic! - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Kitchener, Ontario

See all

Family of 5 - 2 kids, grandparents and my self. Walked in. 1 person ahead of us waiting to be seated. Even though there was a server walking around behind the counter, never looked up to acknowledge us. We waited an unnecessary 10 minutes to be seated. There was 3 servers on and not a single person even said good morning or we will be right with you... So we finally get seated, our drinks arrive. With in minutes my daughter had accidently knocked her juice off the table. My father in law right away started to clean it up off the floor. Our waitress was 2 tables away, never looked over, asked if we needed help, offered a cloth or mop... Came over after it was all cleaned up and never offered to refill her cup..... Meal came.. 3 orders of pancakes and an order of French toast... We had to ask for butter, and when she brought it , she only left us 3 little pads of butter.... For 4 pancakes and 2 pc of French ... Never offered to refill our coffee until after the bill was paid... Will not return... Poor customer service.... If you can even call it that at all... Kitchener location. read more

I,m sorry but last evening went to University Mel,s and had the worst plate of food ever. Potato soup and a turkey sandwich. The "soup" was stone cold and thick enough it would not come off the spoon if upside down, inedible. Sandwich had large hunks of meat that wouldn,t stay on bread, limp lettuce, had to dismantle it to eat it. I,m willing to go back and try a breakfast, but dinner was awful read more

I have to agree with one of the other reviews. I was also very disappointed. I recently went to the new Mel's diner for a weekday breakfast on my way to work. First, service was slow right from the get-go. The restaurant wasn't very busy either. I had to ask for a server & a menu. The breakfast menu items are quite expensive, considerably more than other family style restaurants in the area. So, I also had to ask abut the breakfast special because there was no indication of one. I had eggs, sausages, home fries & toast. There was no fruit accompaniment like an orange slice, nothing! The sausages were small, limp & soggy, like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time. The home fries were the same like they had been sitting under the same heat lamp. Once again, the service during breakfast was poor & infrequent Sorry, but I won't be back to Mel's. I rarely complain about a restaurant experience, but Mel's does not get a thumbs up from me. There are too many good family restaurants in the area with good food, great service & reasonable prices. read more

Decent breakfast and lunch although on multiple occasions I have had hairs in my food. Once a manager saw very clearly that I wasn't eating my food and instead of approaching me herself, she told a very busy server to check on us. It took a while to get a hairless sandwich. Good pies and milkshakes! read more

Went there for breakfast. Its not cheap but has good variety. Good 50's ambience. Good hospitable service. Recommended.

MEH.... what I've tired there isn't really worth the prices . The staff is nice .I feel for them with all the late night drunken morons they get . But the food is just ok. Milkshakes are good . read more

What in the world happened to this place? The last 3 TIMES i have gone here i have picked up my order, get home and its WRONG. Why on earth is it so hard to get an order right (or even close to being right). Also you used to get tons of fries and a cold slaw the last 3 times the fries were skimpy and twice there was no cold slaw. Seems this place keeps increasing their prices and the quality of the food and the service has just gone down hill. The waitress's should spend more time seating customers and working than standing around gabbing. Not impressed with my last 3 visits, i highly doubt ill be back to this location again. read more

Service was good, atmosphere was nice, trivia cards were a fun touch as well, but the food was awful... eggs & bacon were sad & the booth was dirty, had spilt ketchup or something on the seat. read more

Food is okay but some of the waitresses were rude to the hostess and it broke my heart! for that reason i would never go back!

Pretty great place. Had a great time and good food. Love the 50's theme.

We went in on Saturday morning and there's always a line up. So we sat at the bar to get bypass the line and faster service. Took over half an hour to get our food. Not to mention about 5 different wait staff just to get through the meal. Therewas no cream or sugar for the coffee which took another waitress to bring it over. They couldn't even find a spoon to stir it with which another waiter gave me a soup spoon which was too wide to even get in that small ass cup; no wonder they keep asking you if you want refills. Couldn't even ask for a glass of water till it was time for the bill. Very I'll attended. And so is the other restaurant in town. I'm not going back to either. Service is total sh*! And the food was worse than McDonald's. It took us an hour and a half for the whole experience to get some scrambled eggs out of a carton, toast, deep fried potato cubes and some processed prepacked meat. read more

I wouldn't go for anything either than breakfast, and even then there's better places out there. Orered a turkey BLT sandwich and it came without any sauce or mayo on it. The place was also very dirty. read more
