Meloling is great if you want to sharpen mower blades and just about anything else industrial, heavy duty. They do NOT, however, do well with sharpening kitchen knives. I took my handful of four Global Knives to Meloling and they were all duller than when I brought them in for sharpoening. These knives require a 10-12 degree beveled edge. After they were "sharpened" I excitedly took them home to try them out. I literally could not cut a carrot without using excessive force. The real disappointment though is that a local high school's kitchen *chef* was the one who referred me to Meloling. Aside from the disappointment of my dull kitchen knives, I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Jim, the owner. His shop is full of very interesting sharpening machinery, like a museum of heavy duty equipment. He's a good storyteller and knows the local area's history as well. :) Oh, and his prices are very reasonable. read more

I was visiting my graduate student daughter I decided to try out Meloling since she just had normal kitchen knives (20-27 degrees) to sharpen. I have my own sharpening equipment at home so I went with her to the shop and watched him sharpen them. He did it properly and the knives were suitably sharp when we left. He charges almost nothing. He has a entire metal working shop and it looks like he can sharpen pretty much anything and possibly fabricate replacements. He works with a bunch of the local hardware stores and other shops to provide services so you don't have to drive out to his shop. I didn't get a list but if you called he could tell you who they were. We would use him again (but would probably drop off at a local store even though its likely to be a little more expensive). read more

Wow, I was a bit skeptical as during my first trip there was what turned out to be a partial power failure leaving the large extensively equipped shop with a glow of light. The follow up was great as I brought garden shears, fine quality general surgery scissors,and an assortment of nail clippers and utility and good brand scissors. He went to work and in about 1/2 hour all was done in spite of my chatter, interesting fellow. A week later I found 3 forgotten scissors and decided to try a small box hardware store in western Vestal. They told me that they sent out the work and the wanted $16 so that when the work came back in 1 week, which it did, all that was needed was for me to pick them up. When I tried to do that I was told that I had to pay an additional $48. I almost yelled my opinion, I will NEVER go back. My wife reported that the scissor she tried actually cut the callus and not just gnawed at it. read more
