I wanted to love it given the many reviews and stars, however I was extremely disappointed. I was a walk in and requested a manicure with nail extensions and a cateye gel design, and experienced all the issues below 1. When the gel x nails were applied, too much glue was added on 4/5 nails on my right hand which caused my skin to burn when putting it under the light. I asked 2x to file away the excess glue as having it touching your skin and encapsulating your natural nail is unsafe, and it was not properly addressed. She started with attempting to dig it out/separate the glue from my skin using nail clippers which hurt and pierced it. And when I asked the second time, she simply filed it with a regular file so it was flat filled surface underneath my nail. 2. My nail extension was filed crooked. When I asked for it to get fixed, they attempted to but ultimately caused the nail to appear weird. 3. They were unable to create any of the designs I asked for. Nor was anything really explained in terms of what could be done. (The person next to me was given a few options and asked for her preference). 4. After I left, I noticed the top coat had a bubble on one of the fingers. I am usually not really the type to be super bothered on small details like design, shape, and issues with the top coat as I understand some things can be missed. However, I chose to get my nails done (rather than doing them myself) for the safety of a professional and correct application. I can overlook all the issues except that. Overall, I would not be returning nor do I feel comfortable for them to fix it. I am just disappointed and needed to share for those who may have similar concerns or thoughts. 2 stars are for the vibe, cleanliness, kindness, and good cuticle work.

Anyway, I called and scheduled an appointment. Unfortunately once I got there, they said that the nail artist is not working, so I could only go with a simple paint job. I decided to try it out since I had already paid for an Uber to get there. The good thing about it is the nail salon was super adorable inside with lots of flowers and was so clean. It's aesthetically pleasing and peaceful with Frank Sinatra music in the background. I asked for a chrome design but they didn't have chrome polish available in gel, so the next best thing is to use glitter to apply as a top coat to give a similar effect as chrome. I went with baby blue powder on top of white gel polish. The results were mediocre for the color. The one thing I do want to say that I really liked about Iris (nail tech) doing my nails is that she's highly attentive to cuticle trimming and shaping. It's more on the pricier side for nails. Total for my gel manicure was about $100 (60 for gel, 30 for powder add-on, and 10 for gel removal from previous manicure). Usually nail salons charge about $50-60 for manicures and that would be the total, but it's not like that here. Maybe it's an NYC thing? Maybe manicures are cheaper in Cali... Overall, I would definitely come back again but next time I would call ahead and ask if nail designs are available so that I can get exactly what I want.

However, while rolling through the West Village I had a vague memory that at one time I had a manicure at J and Z (or perhaps a shop that was in the same location previously) so I decided to give it a shot. I find whenever I walk into a salon for a manicure the reaction of the staff really dictates the rest of the experience. I find if the staff is indifferent or even slightly annoyed when I enter, it's generally a pretty sub-standard experience. If, on the other hand, they are smiles and welcoming of my business then it's generally a good to great experience. I am happy to say this experience fit into the latter category. Within minutes of entering I was seated and my manicure had begun. Having had many over the years I am pretty familiar with the procedure and I can tell when the person is rushing or moving just at the right pace. I am happy to report this manicure moved just at the right speed (too fast and I've gotten cuts before from overzealous cutting). The manicurist made light conversation at just the right amount to engage me without seeming overwhelming (I consider this a skill). I was very happy with the results of the manicure, which was mostly to cut my nails short and clean up cuticles etc. I added a buff at the end (hey, it's a bit of vanity, why not?) and everything came out great. I decided to tack on a 20 minute chair massage as my neck had been sore recently and I had a weird knot in my back. My manicurist did the massage and she did a great job. It was good enough that I honestly fell asleep during the process! I had a great experience here and look forward to my next visit.

She hires carefully to make sure that clients always have a good experience - and I always have, everyone here is talented and expert at what they do (shoutout to Lydia and Shinne!). What I love and keeps me coming back are first, that they prioritize health of your natural nails - they use the best quality products and are careful with removal to make sure your nails are not damaged by the gel. Second, they take the time to consult with you on what you want based on any photos or ideas you have. They have a huge library of gel colors, glitter, chrome, cateye, etc. and tons of crystals and 3d add ons to choose from. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of work you receive, and with a little bit of care, my manicures always last sometimes for up to 5 weeks if I can't make it to my usual appointment. Overall she was not kind. She also skipped the filling process of the pedicure. It was a very painful process, and I have been routinely getting mani/pedis for over 10 years. One thing I want to note is the lady made me cure my entire hand after painting EACH NAIL. So she would paint my thumb, make the entire hand cure, and switch to the other hand while we waited. This made the process not only take extremely long, but it made all my nails peel off like stickers. The edges were lifting like crazy. I had no choice but to gently pull them off and my nails were extremely damaged. I also felt uncomfortable being under the lamp well over 30 times. I understand if the employees need to have their kids in the salon, however, they were screaming and running around the entire time, which got to be very annoying as the employees would not say anything to their kids.
