I visited South Gate Roller Rink this evening around 9 PM with my mom and her two friends. I was…read morereally looking forward to showing them this local skating rink for the first time. When we walked in, the bouncer was sitting just inside the door. I had my ID ready expecting him to check it. We told him we were thinking about going into the rink but wanted to take a look first. He immediately got dismissive and said there was a cover charge. When I asked if we could just peek inside before deciding, he sarcastically said "would a night club just let you take a look if they were charging a cover?" Like that was not already obvious enough, he then went out of his way to mock the way we asked the question and told us he would have let us in if we had just asked differently. We were not trying to get in for free or cause any trouble. We were a group of women just looking to have a fun night out. To be spoken to that way, especially in front of my mom and her friends, was completely uncalled for. I will not be returning as long as this person is working the door.

I spent my youth roller skating at Skate King in Bellevue and didn't know this place even existed. The roller rink is attached to the bar and across the parking lot, there's another building with the arcade and karaoke. It's definitely old and rundown, but that just adds to the nostalgic charm. We had fun putting our son on roller skates for the first time and they still do all the fun rink stuff like limbo, races, etc. Rental skates could use an update, but overall this is a great place to hang out for a few hours and skate.

There were about 110 people at the show and that filled the place up. Reservations are suggested. No drinks, but if you come early, there are three places next door that have drinks, food and snacks. Come early! Featured are root beer floats with Husky Deli ice cream (a local delicacy) and free range root beer. At least, that's how it's billed. Good sound quality, the great Wurlitzer organ during intermission. There are table side seats up front (cost a bit more) and row seating behind. Seniors get a discount. Fun night! Get on their email list and you'll get notice of upcoming shows (4-8/month).

Gypsy jazz is what brought us to Kenyon Hall…read more They call themselves "Ranger & the Rearrangers:" a five-piece band playing the kind of music you'd expect to hear in a Parisian cafe but with the spirit of a Gypsy campsite. It was an intimate and most charming performance sprinkled with humor and wanderlust. Formerly Hokum Hall, this non-profit vaudeville-toting venue was built in 1916 and is a neighborhood treasure. Rumor has it: Eddie Vedder played a "secret" show here once. But it's really a dear man named Lou Magor whose been at the helm of this performance space for decades. He's a warm, quirky character who doubles as emcee and master musician and brings a corporate hug to the whole experience. The decor, old framed photos, hardwood floors and (the pièce de résistance) a 1920s Wurlitzer pipe organ create all kinds of nostalgia from eras gone by.. and the tickets are affordable, too. Check out their website for upcoming shows (live music, drama, silent movies, poetry readings and more!) and see why Kenyon Hall is called "West Seattle's Lighthearted Entertainment Palace."

Be amazed by a century's worth of telephone equipment from the very first sending device to video phones from the 1964 World's Fair. Your tour guides are equal parts excited and surprised that you are there and able to explain how your call actually gets routed to Beechwood 45789. This is good for all ages, especially 15 and up. Work this into your weekend.

It's in an old phone branch office, and the first floor is actually still a CenturyLink property; you'll need to walk around to the back, then take the elevator up to the 3rd floor, to start your tour. It's free admission, and the tours are free, but you should really donate because this place is so cool! The equipment on display ranges from the late 1800s to nearly what's in use today (fiber optics). All kinds of equipment, from switches, generators, diesel circuit breakers and fuses (multi-thousand amp fuses!) to handsets, field equipment, and cabling, and plenty of incredibly knowledgeable staff are on hand to talk to you about it all. What I didn't expect was that the tours would be so interactive. The first thing we did was sat down at an antique (I wouldn't say "ancient," because this one didn't require turning a crank - unlike some of the others we were able to try!) switchboard and were stepped through how to connect a phone call. We then were taken over to another display of electro-mechanical switching equipment from a company I'd never heard of, and didn't realize that AT&T/Bell kept human operators around as long as they did as sort of a marketing move - literally another company invented and marketed, successfully, a dial telephone system decades before Bell did, and it's also part of the reason that in movies and TV shows, when someone hangs up on you, you immediately get a dial tone. We then were shown a phone system that was specifically designed for the railroad companies (and had been donated by a rail worker that was tearing out old equipment; apparently it had been sitting in this guy's basement in prestine condition). After that, we made our way to a panel switch, that was originally engineered for the Seattle region and actually ran through the '60s, and is now the only panel switch to exist in the world! The people here are all so knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely enthusiastic about this equipment. You can't not get excited about it, even if you're not into telecom or electrical engineering. Not to mention, free off-street parking!
