Used to like this place, but now it's just become a no-go. They look like they have a lot of stuff, but every time I go, they're out of whatever I went there for --- usually several things, as I always go with a list, since it's a bit of a drive for me. Their watercolor brush selection is quite skimpy; they never seem to have the size I need or type I want, and even weeks later they still don't have that size/type in stock. Same for specific watercolors. They have an entire display of Daniel Smith watercolors, yet the very color I need, they're out of. One day one of the staff spent 15 minutes checking all the other brands to see if they had that color in *any* other brand -- nope. And it was a common color like Prussian blue. Watercolor sketchbooks? Unless you like blocks (which I personally can't stand), you won't find much. A small display of Hand-book sketchbooks, which are mostly for drawing and not watercolor. The watercolor ones are 200gsm, not 300gsm. (Which I was able to order from Amazon for the same price as Meininger was charging for the 200gsm.) Drawing pens? You're in luck if you do manga. If you use probably the most popular brand, Uni-Pin fineliner, forget it. They don't even sell them. (They seem to prefer Sigma Microns.) Watercolor pencils? Sure, if you want the really large expensive sets. If you want to try them out with a set of 24 Goldfaber Aquas, nope. Art storage? Slim pickings. A few zippered pouches. The dollar store has a better selection. Overall, they're out of whatever I need when I need it, and they won't be getting in anytime soon. Sometimes they can get stuff sent from their CO Springs location, but that means a second trip back to the store, when I only wanted to drive there once. (The neighborhood is awful.) Also, their website is very hit or miss, and *won't* tell you if they have something in stock in the store. Sometimes you put in a search term that will return "no item found" when I know for a fact they sell that item in the store. Go do a search for "Lamy Safari" and you'll see what I mean. They have a selection of Lamy Safari pens in the store, but only converters and lead refills on their website. Prices are high, sometimes by $10-15 or more over what you'd pay elsewhere. I was looking for the Albrecht Durer 24 watercolors set, which they were selling for full price at $72. I had just seen this same set on Blick Art for half that, $37.50. I mentioned this to one of the staff and his response was, "Yeah, well they can buy in bulk and we can't." Okay, fair enough, but wow, even with shipping I could get it far, far cheaper online. As for returns, ha! Don't go by their printed return policy. I mistakenly bought a quill watercolor brush that's way too big for my needs; called the store to see if they have the next size down, which they do, but was told I could not exchange it "because the manager says it's too hard to tell if a brush has been used or not." Then why doesn't the return policy state that? See the attached photo for their posted Return Policy. Now show me where it says "brushes can't be returned because you can't tell if they've been used or not." The staff person on the phone said I could bring in the brush and speak to the manager about it, but I will not be doing that. I've encountered him before: he's one of those people who thinks he's hilarious and is in your face whether you need help or not. Sorry, I refuse to deal with him, so I'll just keep my overpriced $47 synthetic brush and try to find a use for it. Some of the staff are pleasant and nice to work with; we even got to know some by name. But overall, shopping at Meininger's has just become too much of a hassle and we won't be shopping there again. read more

I did the research on similar products at three large craft stores and found Meininger's to actually be less expensive plus the added value by people who like being there. When I first walked in I was very excited! I saw an employee ask some customers if they were finding everything okay, so after I said "excuse me" and asked for direction to product (never been here brand new to town). They gave me a weird look instead of simply telling me they don't stock those types of products. Told me they had some thin wire I could use in the back left.."okay thanks" I go to find it and go to every back left I can find (yes there's more than one because there are divider type walls that section the store). I cannot find it anywhere. I walk back to the front and out of the store. Nobody else asked if I needed help (not even the multiple other employees who were just standing there chatting) even though I looked completely lost. I felt very dismissed, judged, and not welcome here. Like I was looked down upon. Horrible first impression of the establishment. They had some really nice looking selection for other mediums I do, but sadly I doubt I will ever return because of how I was treated. I can't say anything on the value since I didn't look at a single price tag. When I was walking out the same employee that had told me "back left" was up there and didn't say a word, didn't ask if I found anything, NOTHING. Artist heaven! This place has everything you can think of. The prices run about average to high end but the quality the products are great. I have purchased several sketchbooks, brushes and mix media journals. I haven't regretted any of my purchases. The employees are always very nice and frequently check in with you to assist you in any way that they can. Whenever I'm in the area I love to stop in and see what I "must" have before leaving. Upon walking in, I was immediately impressed by the abundance of supplies. I came in to peruse as I had some stuff I was thinking about but otherwise wasn't looking for anything in particular, and I spent quite a bit of time in the store just taking everything in. The store was well-staffed (on Monday) and I did have an employee ask if I was finding everything alright shortly after I came in, so assistance was readily available. I later saw this employee helping a couple at the counter with higher-end fountain pens, and they seemed very knowledgeable. Parking was easy as there is a lot next to the store, and of course metered street parking available close by. I ended up picking up a beginner's refillable fountain pen, as I had been wanting one. The price seemed reasonable to me, but as I am not a frequent buyer of art supplies, I cannot fully judge how the prices compare. The store did have some bare spots, but that is to be expected after the holidays as they restock from people buying gifts. If I am ever in need of further art supplies, I would definitely check this place out first. read more

This is the most amazing art supply I've been to. It reminds me of Blick in NYC but even better! I spent the first 15 minutes of my visit just wandering around and soaking it all in, and didn't even go upstairs! I went in to look for some watercolors for a set of aquash pens I just got, and there were s o many options I did not even know where to start. Cakes. Tubes. Liquids. Palettes. Sold in sets. Sold individually. Gah! Phil was very informative and helpful and explained the difference between each type and brand, didn't try to pressure me into buying the most expensive thing (or any thing at all) but really seemed to want to help me make the most informed decisions. I actually will vouch that this art supply store makes the perfect gift giving idea to the artistic butterfly in your life. It is a small business, and this is who we need to support. I absolutely enjoyed seeing the coloring books, fancy easels and art supplies that are displayed all over. It appears that Meininger treats their employees pretty nicely, based on their break room in the second level. There is a second level where they had the easels displaying and it was super interesting. They have this template drawing book that teaches you how to draw big eyed anime characters and other cute illustrations. As a result of some plans falling through, I found myself at this store while tripping pretty hard. I was peaking in the paint brushes and it felt like I was at an art exhibit. I had to remind myself that "this is a store" and "you can't just touch everything." Every body working there was super nice but not overwhelmingly so. Been meaning to leave a review and say thanks. I came here for supplies to make my sister's wedding sign, something I'd never done. I was painting fairly thin letters on glass and wasn't sure how or whether to prime, what kind of paint to use, finisher, etc. I forgot to ask for his name but the person who helped me, made all the difference in the world for my sign. As a Denver artist, I have shopped at Meiningers many times. To the point - Yes great selection. Yes - 50% of the time the employees are rude or uninformed. One time I was treated so rudely it was embarrassing. But I can deal with a jerk and then let it go. My biggest complaint are the hours. Artist's work around the clock. The hours here (during the week and weekend) are ridiculously short and less accommodating than the staff. read more

Purchased a luxury pen for my boss in the middle of December, on sale for almost $300. Worked great inside the store but embarrassed to say that my boss gave it back since it broke. Went to the store to see if they could refund it for me, or even give me store credit but they would not. The manager, Patty, who sold me the pen, and spoke with me today told me all I could do was send off the pen for repair. It would cost $36 to have them look at it plus I would have to pay for the repair cost. For being a luxury pen, I would have never imagined it to break so quickly! I would definitely not recommend this store to anyone looking to buy luxury pens since they have bad quality items. read more
