Kartika serves good Indonesian rijsttafel (multi-dish sampler of spicy meats, vegetables, rice, and…read morenoodles). I don't have Indonesian food where I live, so was excited to try this in Amsterdam. I thought the dishes were all flavorful and gave a good mix of meat, vegetable, and rice dishes. The individual servings were small, but filling enough because of the heavy coconut milk used in most dishes. 1 star off: The attitude of the waitstaff was abysmal. First of all, their website does not offer reservations and they rarely answer their phones. So my family and I arrived at restaurant opening to get a table. The first thing they said to us was "Do you have a reservation? If you don't, I can only give you a table if you get out by 6:30PM." in a stern way. We said okay. The group that came after me also raised the issue that no one at the restaurant answers their phone for reservations. The waitstaff did not respond to that, but begrudging seated them. 1 star off: While we were ordering food, the waitstaff noticed that my son had a water bottle with him, and proceeded to give him a lecture that water bottles are not allowed and that we have to order water from them. He is a teenager...he does not know he was supposed to conceal his water bottle at this restaurant. We all ordered drinks, including water, but the experience left my family feeling unwelcomed.

Most of the reviews here are talking about rice tables, where you get small portions of 10 different dishes to share and try; if you haven't had Indonesian food before or are looking for a sampler to eat a lot of favorites, this is certainly the way to go! If you're looking for a more substantial portion of your favorite dish, though, they also have full sized portions of favorites! Highly recommend: rendang Padang, gado gado, nasi goreng, or Soto ayam. If you're feeling like you want some crunch, don't miss out out on their chips! They're not on the menu, but at the front counter where you order they also have bags of emping (seed crackers) and krupuk (shrimp crackers) for sale. Dip or munch into these alongside your meal. Yum! Will definitely be back next time I'm in Amsterdam.

Mentioned it and was told maybe they overcooked!? My guess was they were frozen for a while. Our guest was disappointed with her chicken based meal. Overall: 5 stars…read more When I searched where I could partake on the Indonesian Rice Table feast in Amsterdam, Sampurna came up with their intriguing Satay Solo course that has a small plates of everything. I love the concept because it offers so much insight into the cuisine without having to consume in such large volumes. That said, this "solo" rice table was still food that was more than 2 meals worth for me, but much better than 12 meals worth. Love the food and the flavors, and was impressed by how well everything was cooked and balanced each other. [ PART I ] Chicken Skewers - Classic chicken satay with peanut sauce that is tender and works well with that sweet and savory profile. Beef Skewers - Love these beef skewers that have a strong meatiness to the bite. Goat Skewers - Very intriguing, not too gamey meat with a relatively sweet profile that works. Nasi Goreng - Well flavored fried rice that stands on its own but tastes even better with the rice plate. Bami Goreng - Deliciously decadent noodles powered by the bacon. Daging Smoor - I love the flavor profile of this sweet braised beef; its tender, its strong in flavor, and goes so well on top of the bed of rice. [ PART II ] Jagung Kacang Panjang - light clean dish with delicious vegetables; great balance to the menu. Salat Manga - Flavorful and refreshing mango salad in a peanut dressing that has sweet and nutty profile; this dish is bold in flavor but also provides some relief to the other heavier flavors on the menu. Sambal Goreng Telor - The sambal gives such a bold flavor to moisten and flavor the boiled egg; this would taste even better if the egg were soft boiled. Acar Ketimun - Much needed component of the rice table that provides acidity and freshness to contrast all the bold flavors of the menu. Serundeng - Toasted coconut and peanut topping I sprinkled onto the noodles; adds a tropical twist to the dish. Emping - Nutcrackers that are even more crisp than the shrimp crackers. Gives a density and sharp textural component. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: E Service: E Menu: +2 Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

We had a party of five and the table arrangement allows Service was quite friendly. Food quality was good. The dishes can be ordered individually but most/all of them can be ordered one of three family style options (essentially small, medium and large). The price is per person when ordered family style. The portions were not the largest but we had a few light eaters which allowed me to eat more. Overall, worth a try.

The ambiance of the restaurant was fun and eclectic. I was so happy to see a whole vegetarian section. The peanut sauce from the gado-gado was my favorite hands-down. I also really enjoyed the tofu skewers, even though everything I tasted was amazing. I wished I could have tried more dishes because of how good everything was! The drinks were also tasty. I had a mocktail, which I believe was the BERBUSA PIR. My husband ordered an alcoholic drink that was great as well.

I've walked by this place 1000's of times since it's at the end of the block of my Amsterdam apartment. Since the pandemic, it has been closed to indoor dining more than it has been open. I regret not popping in there for dinner when I had the chance. It's a vast space for Amsterdam. The front door is blocked with a table, candles and menus. Technically masks are not required outside, so if you're inclined to go maskless, this is more convenient. It's a very busy sidewalk during the day, but at night, not so bad. My friends were very satisfied with it too. They are smaller portions (by the sight) but they fill you up in a hurry! It was superlekker. I definitely look forward to exploring their menu options here. I can't believe I didn't try them sooner!

We were able to indicate our preferences: satay and randang sauces for us! For the starter, we had shrimp egg rolls and pork satay skewers. Great satay and LOTS of it! As the main courses got there, we realized the HIGH quality of the restaurant: we were able to discover 12 different types of dishes (meats with sauces + vegetarian dishes). All very different and DELICIOUS. Our favorite were the chicken and the beef randang. Rice cooked in coconut cream is served on the side as well as prawn crackers. The servers - from the same family - know their stuff. They are very attentive and even funny. Everything is HOMEMADE, YES, the prawn crackers too! For dessert, we asked for the typical traditional Indonesian cake: spekkoek. Not gonna insist again that it was homemade but you could taste the freshness! Two different pieces are served with a coffee or tea, as you prefer and whipped cream. At the end of the meal, the servers invited us to visit their backyard! 45 minutes by foot to reach this restaurant outside of the center, but well worth-it! Congratulations to the chef and the whole sweet team!

We missed an opportunity in Amsterdam due to our chosen restaurant being fully booked. We chose to eat here as our last dinner before flying home. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious inside. We were among the early parties, so the space was warming up for the night. Our guidebook recommended having a Dutch Rijtsttafel, and what better place to have it! This is a family-run establishment with a long history. Our menus came with Java-Bode, their house publication, detailing their 40-year history. The walls are adorned with vintage KLM Royal Dutch Airlines airplanes and advertisements. I love their nod to Dutch aviation. Our rijtsttafel was very enjoyable. It's hard to keep track of everything on the table, so I kept a menu for reference. What a great way to conclude our time in Holland!

We didn't realize how popular De Lachende Javaan is--they were completely fully booked! The owner noticed we were visiting from out of town and was incredibly accommodating. He explained the situation but managed to squeeze us in, provided we could eat relatively quickly before the next reservation arrived. We were so grateful because the meal ended up being fantastic. Since it was our first time trying Indonesian food, we went with the Rijsttafel Biasa (the smallest menu option). It was a variety of small plates served on portable burners to keep everything warm, accompanied by rice. It was the perfect introduction--there wasn't a single dish I didn't love. Even though the plates look small, we were completely full and satisfied by the end. We managed to finish just in time for the reserved party to take the table, so it worked out perfectly. Highly recommend booking a table in advance, but if you get the chance to eat here, definitely do it!
