My dad's custom-made 80th birthday cake from Danielle Kattan Cakes turned out to be a success…read more Everyone was very happy with it. We asked for a golf-themed birthday cake and Danielle exceeded our expectations. Danielle Kattan Cakes is based out of The Canvas Cake Studio in Winston-Salem, NC. Same business address. Danielle Kattan Cakes does custom cakes and The Canvas Cake Studio is a cake-decorating studio that hosts family-friendly classes, parties, and other fun events. Both are owned and run by Danielle. My wife found Danielle by doing a Google search for custom cake makers in the Piedmont Triad. Danielle was one of the top results and she had stellar reviews. My wife communicated with Danielle via email. Danielle asked if there was a specific design we'd like and if we had pictures to share. My wife shared a picture of a golf-themed cake that she thought was cute. However, she told Danielle to feel free to put her own creative spin on it. She also told Danielle that the grandkids call my dad "Gong Gong." Anticipating 13-15 guests, Danielle quoted $145-$165. Our actual payment was $165 plus $11.55 tax for a total of $176.55. We were invoiced through The Canvas Cake Studio. Danielle recommended we pick up the same day about 2-4 hours before the event. After that, we were told to refrigerate the cake until 2 hours before serving. We followed these guidelines and everything turned out great. Not only did the cake look spectacular, but it tasted delicious too. We chose Cleo's Almond and Coconut Signature Cake Flavor from Danielle's website. It's described as: "Light moist layers of almond and coconut semolina cake filled with orange blossom buttercream iced with a swirly combination of coconut and orange blossom buttercream." https://www.daniellekattancakes.com/signature-cakes/ The pictures and video of the cake, that I posted here on Yelp, speak for themselves. We loved it. I especially loved the golf glove on top of the cake that said "Happy Birthday Gong Gong," the golf bag and clubs, and the gold golf ball teed up in a patch of grass with the number '80' on it. I could tell the cake was made with a lot of thought and care, and I loved the attention to detail. It was simply amazing all around. Danielle is so skilled. My wife started emailing with Danielle about 7 weeks before the event. Sometimes, it took Danielle many days to respond and my wife would have to follow up when not hearing back after 5, 10, 20+ days. So, communication wasn't the best. We had a day-of backup plan just in case things didn't work out. We picked up the cake at The Canvas Cake Studio on a Sunday morning shortly after 10:00am. My wife called Danielle to let her know that we were on our way. No one answered, so she left a voicemail. The strip where The Canvas Cake Studio is located, Jonestown Plaza, was dead, but we did see a car parked in the back which gave us hope. Danielle's son Adrian was waiting inside for us and we picked up the cake from him. He was polite and kind. Adrian was the one who told us to refrigerate until 2 hours before serving. The studio itself was charming. Thank you, Danielle and Adrian, for helping to make my dad's 80th special and memorable!

I had tried…read morea few others in the area but one place (won't mention who but it rhymes with Lewey's!) never responded to my multiple emails and calls. And another actual favorite of mine (Little Cake Company) was booked through Mother's Day Weekend. Danielle responded within an hour or two of my email and we texted back and forth about the details. I was worried about the cake not being able to serve 25-30 people but it got the job done easily and then some! I ordered a tie-dye cake with "Happy 40th Birthday, Ken!" written on it. The only hiccup which I actually didn't even notice immediately was that they had written Kent instead (I sent a photo to my friends and they asked if I was going to get it corrected - ha!) The shop took care if it immediately and the cake was a hit at the party. Loved the funfetti flavor and vanilla ice cream. Few days later and I am still chipping away at it, and it's just as tasty as the day I picked it up. Maybe slightly on the pricier side but for a custom request and that much detail in the scoring/design, totally worth it! Thanks Danielle/Canvas Cakes - I will definitely be back for future party needs!! @azfitfoodfun

I ordered the white wine poundcake, banana pudding cake, and the red velvet cube. When I tell you that the poundcake was moist-whew it increased the humidity in the room!! From the look of it, it's unassuming like an ordinary Grandma's poundcake. This is rival's your Me-maw's poundcake. It also had the perfect buttery crispy edge at the bottom. Those who no poundcake know what I'm referring to. Now my favorite, the red velvet cube, is in a darling reusable container. The favor and moistness had my licking my spork a toddler. I also had the banana pudding cake -- don't judge me, or label me a glutton-- I was eating all of this for research purposes lol. I really enjoyed the banana pudding cake as well because it did not have bananas in it. That unique order option is what sealed the deal for me. Definitely will continue to order dessert from Ta'Nisha Monique's when I am in town. If Ta'Nisha Monique shipps --Lawd on my waistline!

Overall, it's a delightful spot for anyone with a sweet tooth, and I can't wait to return to try more of their creative confections!

It also allows for seating inside and access to the seating out on the patio more easily accessible. The cases are rearranged now and they've added gelato. I didn't try that, but it looked interesting. The worker who waited on me was so kind and helpful, and apologized for answering the phone while I was in there (there was no need, because you're running a business, I get it), but she was so polite! They always have a fun assortment of flavors of cupcakes but it's rather hit or miss what quality you will get. They have fun combinations and flavors and are always beautiful, but sometimes they are quite dense, sometimes super moist, and sometimes dry and will nearly choke you. My default cupcake is always the yellow cake with chocolate icing. I feel like it's hard to mess up. However, I tried a cookie this most recent time and didn't love it. It was really thick and hard to eat. The flavor wasn't great, either. This is definitely somewhere to stop in and try- just to say you did it. They were on Cupcake Wars, after all.

As well as a crossiant cookie, or crookie. The frosting on all were sickeningly sweet. I scraped most of it off and just ate the cake part. Even on day one I found the chocolate covered strawberry cupcake to be dried out. And the chocolate coating had a strange oily flavor. The only cupcake I partly enjoyed was the kataifi filling in the Dubai chocolate cupcake. The crookie was okay. Very little of the chocolate chip cookie part had a crunchy crust. It mostly felt like eating raw dough texture if that's your thing. I wanted so bad to like the cupcakes but they were overpriced for the size and dry on day one. I'm a local so I will eventually try them out again. But, if I was visiting from out of town then I sadly would not return.

Julia Child once said, "A party without cake is just a meeting." I think WitsEnd Bakery's purpose…read moreis to ensure more of our days are filled with parties. This artisan bakery has undergone all health and department of agriculture inspections and been approved to prepare baked goods for wholesale and private sale. If you've never ordered a cake from a home bakery, we will walk you through the process we followed step by step. For our family, it started with deciding what type of cake my mom would like for her birthday, my dad would like for his birthday, and both parents would enjoy for their anniversary. My parents love old fashioned layer cakes with mountains of airy frosting. We browsed the photos and list of cake flavors in the Notes section on the WitsEnd Facebook page. Mom decided upon a coconut cake for her birthday. This was no ordinary coconut cake. Dubbed Grandma's Coconut Cake, the enticing dessert had been soaked for two days to saturate the cake with coconut flavor, then iced in a fluffy frosting and covered in flaked coconut. Six glorious layers of moist cake were slathered in a towering light-as-air frosting. Vicki Crouser, the owner of WitsEnd, has a contact number for the business on Facebook. We called, placed our order, and arranged a date to pick up the cake. When you work with any home bakery, due to restrictions you won't be able to pick up a cake directly at their home. You will arrange a time and public place for the cake delivery. This was quite convenient for us. Jerry met Vicki at the New Town Square shopping center at an agreed upon time on a day he planned on running other errands. Dad adores fruit .The Banana Pudding Cake was a perfect choice for his birthday treat. Four layers of sumptuous banana cake were filled with creamy banana frosting and vanilla wafer crumbles. This lavish sweet was hand delivered neatly in a labeled, sealed, cardboard cake box. If you don't finish the cake in one sitting, plan on making room in your refrigerator. All of the WitsEnd cakes use fresh butter and eggs. My parent's anniversary cake was a meeting of the minds so to speak. The Mandarin Orange Cake had the mandarin orange pieces my mom loves and the pineapple my dad cannot resist. The confection was an ambrosial tropical paradise. With all three cakes, we had no issues ordering or picking up the desserts. Vicki was always on time to deliver her box of sugary bliss. The WitsEnd Bakery Facebook also showcases beautifully decorated custom cakes for weddings and themed birthday parties. They make a variety of cookies like chocolate mint, chocolate berry, peanut butter tap taps, chocolate chip, gingerbread, and molasses. Several local restaurants serve WitsEnd Bakery cakes. For your next special occasion, veer away from the grocery store and head towards a local baker like WitsEnd bakery. During my most recent visit, I ordered the pasta which was supposed to be their version of Carbonara. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed. The sauce was very watery and the egg seemed to be separated so it wasn't really incorporated into the sauce. There were quite a few bits of cooked egg throughout the pasta and there was also hardly any cheese. Instead of a rich, creamy Carbonara flavor, the pasta just didn't have much flavor. I also got the Pineapple and Coconut Entremet. It was good but there wasn't really anything special about it. It was essentially the same coconut crémeux that they've used before, with pineapple. I've tried quite a few of their entremets at this point so maybe that's part of the reason I felt that way. If they come out with a new flavor of crémeux though, I'll definitely want to try it! I didn't get the Iced Mocha Latte this time but that was because the last time I ordered one, I couldn't taste any mocha at all. Even the color looked different. It looked more like a regular latte. I went back and asked if it was actually a mocha and I was told that it was but I honestly didn't think it was. I've had their Iced Mocha Latte many times so I know how it looks and what it normally tastes like. I also haven't seen the person who used to make the lattes anymore. I really loved the ones he made and hope he still works there! There seem to be so many new faces every time we visit now and I rarely see anyone who used to work there. After a couple of disappointing visits, we haven't been going to Bobby Boy as often as we used to. I really hope things improve because I've always enjoyed this place and I'd love to have a better experience next time.
