My review would be more like 3.5 starts I think. I took the Megabus for the first time to Detroit over Labor Day weekend. I've never taken Greyhound so I really don't have anything to compare it to. The buses on this line are Coach USA. My first experience from Union Station was the bus leaving an hour late. Not starting out good. This meant we were on the Dan Ryan during rush hour traffic which resulted us in losing another half hour time. Leaving Detroit, it left on time but got stuck in construction traffic and we were 20 mins late. This could have been worse but the driver got off the Skyway at State St. instead of sitting in that traffic waiting to get onto the Dan Ryan. The seats themselves are good sized but with stuff (ie backpack/purse/etc) and with someone sitting next to you, it gets a little crowded. They also recline but be careful how back you go b/c I had to ask the person in front of me to put it up a little bit. She had it all the way back at my knees and every time she moved, she kept banging into my knees. I wasn't about to sit like that for hours. Especially since the seat next to her was empty and I had someone next to me. On the Detroit route, it stops at a Hardee's that was connected to a convenience store. Personally I think a half hour is a little long. Unless you want to order and sit down to eat (which means you eat fast), you end up standing around waiting for the bus to leave again. Also, the stop wasn't half way. It was more than 3 hrs out of Chicago and less than 2 hrs out of Detroit. Fine for leaving Chicago but leaving Detroit, it doesn't make sense. Personally something half way would have made sense but they didn't ask my opinion. I didn't use the bathroom so I can't comment on them. The price was right. I had purchased my tickets about 6 weeks out, paid $8 from Chicago and $1 from Detroit. I ended up changing my return date maybe 2 weeks out and had to pay an additional $20. But still for less than $30, I got a round trip to Detroit. If you think about it, the person next to you may have paid $1 for that trip so that sort of tells you the clientele on the bus. A lot of students which makes sense. On my return trip someone decided to spray cologne. I was tasting it, they had sprayed so much and the smell lingered for hours. Some people don't have common sense. You can make changes up to 24 hrs before your initial trip with only a $1 change fee and your trip is good for a year out. You can't get that on an airline! Even with all the delays, I think I will take it again, you definitely can't be the price. **Minor update** I took the Bus again for Christmas and the experience was much better. We left Chicago about 5 mins after scheduled but only made a 20 min rest stop and got into Detroit about 10-15 mins early. Then on the return stop we left almost 20 mins late but this time made a 15 min stop (although we were waiting on someone so it was probably more like 20-25) and we stopped closer to Chicago at a nicer stop and was still 5-10 mins early. I had women drivers this time, maybe that's why??? :-) No movie has been shown on any of my trips now, I would think a 5 hr drive would warrant some entertainment. This time I bought my tickets the morning they went on sale and paid $15 for each trip. Either they had 1 ticket at $1 or they raised the prices. read more

This is a new service to Columbus. I don't know how they set their prices, but I'm going to Pittsburgh on one of their buses for $2 (yes you read that right!) round trip. The buses are double-deckers and come with free wi-fi, at seat plug-ins and panoramic windows. I board at the Nationwide Bldg on High Street. My brother just took one from Washington to Pittsburgh but his trip cost him about $20 each way. Still quite a bargain but nothing like mine. I'll update everyone when I get back. read more

The bus broke down and we were stranded on the side the highway near the Ohio border for 6 hours without A/C or water. The company did not request a new bus to be sent until we had already been waiting for 2 hours, then it took another 3 for it to arrive. Communication from the company was very weak throughout the ordeal. Our 6.5 hour trip took 13 hours. Funny thing is- of the passengers that I spoke with that have travelled with Megabus in the past, many had similar stories of breakdowns in the middle of the highway. Sounds like this is just a normal, common part of doing business. Be warned. read more

Yes. I took a bus. And unlike MattL's shorty version this one was aptly named and certifiably a Mega experi. But srsly, you're on a bus, how you can get much beyond a 3 star is well, beyont. Scheduled a 5p departure on a Friday night, left at approx 5:20 from union station. This double decker menace to the Go Green community was prob about 1/2 full and for the most part, a seamless boarding venture...didn't see any of the chaos others have noted. Our driver had a face for radio.doh! but fittingly a voice for it too; i basically wanted him on the PA throughout the trip, sadly he only made a brief departure and arrival notice. Getting out of Chicago at 5p was a bit silly but that's the deal at rush hour so went with it. Once up and going, my guess is we traveled no less than 70mph, give or take. It was interesting actually looking down *over* 18 wheelers as we traveled West on I80 Free WiFi didn't work but my router did and had a pretty solid connection when we used it. Seats were what you'd expect on a plane but the recline was superb, esp on the inside seat. No movie played on the available 7" flat screens sat every 3rd row. Bathroom was not nearly as bad as you might expect. No stops in the 6.5 hour trip. 60 bucks round trip, not bad and you can get $1 rides when avail. Theoretically... I love the Megabus with a 5-star kind of love. It's cheap. It's clean. They offer wi-fi. And they're so much more eco than some of your other traveling options. Also, I find it hard to hold anything against a double-decker vehicle. Practically... Megabus is... "trying" (which is my polite way of saying-- they could improve things). I just had the pleasant experience of buying a ticket for a bus that never came. If there had been some sort of notification on the website of the lack of service, this would have... um... been helpful. After a few calls with customer service, I was appeased with a new ticket on the next available bus and an additional "our apologies" ticket to use within the year. Free things make the pain go away so much faster. I still like you, Megabus. But... if you actually show up when I use my free ticket... I think I'll love you. read more

Megabus: The luxury of first world, the stability of second world, and reliability of third world (which depletes the luxury). Waiting on benches (often occupied by sleeping bums), timely guesstimations on arrival time (use their app to know when they're running late), they could use more shelter rain cover at most stops (Des Moines stop update is excellent now). Having traveled to several locations I will use Megabus again because of the price. I'm a big fan of the electrical outlets and wifi when they work. The worst was being stranded in Chicago overnight because a driver called in sick. Thankfully it was a warm summer night and I just walked around with luggage to places that were open with another stranded passenger I met. Left at 6am instead of 11pm the night before. They offered to reimburse me for my ticket which I paid $1 for. I tried to call the number, they transferred me and the call dropped on their end. Not that it was worth the dollar, but it wasn't worth the time to call again to give them my two cents. I still used them after that, and had more good and bad experiences. Again it's the price and not the safety that makes it worth it. If you plan ahead you can go to a lot of major cities for just $1. read more

Two stars: This is only because it was cheap and it got us between points A & B--Chicago to Iowa, and back again. I would feel worried, having an inexperienced, or non-streetwise loved one traveling alone on these busses! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It all comes down to staff and management. The pick-up outside of Chicago's Union Station was confusing. It wasn't clear where we were supposed to be waiting. I had to ask other travelers, many of whom seemed to be guessing as well. (People were asking me too.) CLEANLINESS: It was fair, including the lavatory. COMFORT: The seats were fine and the overhead lights were good enough for reading. The wifi didn't work, going or coming. Both rides were fairly smooth. SAFETY: Standing outside of Union Station: There were seedy looking people looming around, panhandlers, and other rough looking folks. Be careful! On the bus, it was okay, but I would say you have to have some sense of adventure to travel this way. I felt safe, but I could see how it's not for everybody. In terms of the actual trip, our drivers appeared to travel well, and I never worried about how they drove the buses. THE DRIVERS: 1) Our experience of the first driver was uneventful and what you should expect. 2) The second driver's statements, however, were not inappropriate, they were totally off! As we approached Chicago, instead of saying, "Please check your belongings. Make sure you have everything with you," "Thank you," or something to that effect, he went beyond specific, going into details, raising an eyebrow, about our property. He specifically warned us about leaving our wallets, our money, our phones and devises, purses, even our jewelry!? And all the possible places that people might forget them. Asking travelers to check themselves. (It didn't feel like friendly advice. It was creepy! I felt alert--of him!) It felt like being at a street-show, not entertainment, a scam, where there was a pick-pocket amongst you. The performer says things to get the audience to start nervously patting themselves down, thinking they are checking for their valuables, only to be revealing where they actually hide their precious things. Fellow passengers looked visibly unsettled. I was uncomfortable. He calmly continued: "Make sure you have your iPhone, or it will become 'My Phone,'" he warned. Really? It will become yours...? He told us he was from the Southside, where he knows people who unlock iPhones. Someone complained--good for her! Thanks for standing up! It seemed as though our return driver had a criminal history! This experience soured my overall faith in Megabus. Not good! All in all my trip was a cautious adventure; I'd rather NOT use them again. And I won't recommend them. read more

The seats are pretty comfortable, and there is ample leg room. They advertise a couple of things though that aren't quite the case. First of all the low fares are not, in my experience, easy to come by, unless you are going someplace super close like Milwaukee, and traveling on a weekday. But still for $10-$20 one way I guess it's not bad.... They say that they have WiFi on the bus but I just took a 9-hour ride to Minneapolis from Chicago and not only did the WiFi not work, the power outlet in my row AND the light above my seat didn't work. In addition, our bus was 45 minutes late picking us up. So there we all were, standing on the curb on Canal between jackson and Van Buren, with no way of knowing if or when our bus was coming, nowhere to sit, irritated and impatient. I would recommend Megabus if, like I said, you are trying to get to Milwaukee and you know about it far enough in advance to get the good price. If you are traveling out of the 4-hour range and can afford it... I would fly or take a train. read more

The company attempted to trick me out of my money while attempting to exchange one round trip for another. Its website fools you into thinking that your trade in value is 50%, when the truth it is not. They tricked my mother like this before, and almost got me too. So, you actually have to manually trade in both reservations and of course pay the exchange/trade in fee both times. You also will not receive your full 100% trade in value. My first Megabus experience was this past weekend--to Toledo and back to Chicago again. All in all, it was not a bad experience. The bus arrived on time (basically on the nose) and evne though it hit some back outbound traffic on the way out of town and there were torential downpours, we were only 25 minutes late into Toledo, which was nice. The busdriver was pleasant, playing two movies, making an abbreviated stop (apparently they usually stop about an hour away from Toledo for 30 minutes), and generally driving safely! I'm a last-minute kinda gal, so for two people, roundtrip to Toledo, it was about $100. Yeah, not that cheap, but cheaper than flying or renting a car, and I had a horrific experience with Amtrak (Which is more expensive) and Grayhound scares me...therefore it was a good option;) My boyfriend has taken it more times than I have and generally has had good experiences as well. However, the last time he was on his way back to Chicago from Toledo, he waited in Toledo for a 4:30 bus that didn't arrive until around 8. The reason? The tail-lights went out on the bus, so the bus pulled over until it was light enough out to drive. Yeah, that's weird. And when my boyfriend called to complain (Surely, that's worth a complimentary ticket?!), he got no response. All in all, I'd use em again because they're convenient, and if you book far enough in advance, cheap. I also heard that they're extending the service to New York mid-September. Just FYI! read more

Used Megabus to get from Chicago to Madison WI and back. The trip up was fine. The bus was a 1/2 hour late but that was no big deal. The ride up to Madison was easy with no problems and a clean bus. A good experience. On the way back though...the Megabus never showed up in Madison for the return trip to Chicago. This was also a problem with the bus the same day that was doing the same run in the other direction (Chicago-Madison-Minneapolis). Customer service was almost impossible to get in touch with and when you did they would just say things like "it should be there in 20 minutes" or "it's on its' way" which were all flat-out lies. After 7 PM (the bus was at 5 on a Sunday) there was no answer and you'd just get hung up on after being on hold for a bit. Which was almost to be expected, because at 6:50 the operator had said "oh yeah, call back in 15 minutes and we should have a definitive answer for you". Honestly, I wouldn't have really cared that much if someone would have just told us the bus was canceled so we didn't have to sit at a park-and-ride for 3 1/2 hours waiting for a bus that never left Minneapolis. Took the Van Galder home. It was only, like $4 more. And they show up. read more

I wanted to post an update to my last rather annoyed review of Megabus. After I talked with staff at Coach USA about the ridiculous delays my parents suffered using the Megabus, my Mom was given the name and e-mail of a supervisor and told to let her know the story. My Mom e-mailed said supervisor, and almost immediately got a very apologetic response, and promise of a full refund of not only the Megabus round trip, but also the $51 in taxi fair that was accrued becasue of missed rides. The check arrived 3 days later. While I still worry about possible future mechanical failures, that was a really impressive response to my families bad experience. Even the effort it took to get the supervisors e-mail was nearly reasonable (called main Megabus number, was given Coach USA number, was forwarded to a manger who provided the e-mail because the supervisor was already gone for the day) OK Megabus, I'll give you another try. read more

I paid to reserve a seat and the bus driver refused to let me sit there. Nutty. Not a big deal, but it was the whole reason I paid the additional amount. I won't ride again. When I politely asked for my seat she threatened to call the police and kick me off. Then she said I could move to an unreserved seat. I asked if there were seats available. I wanted to write a parody of the Venga Boys's hit dance party song "Venga Bus" for this review, but I'm feeling rather tired after sitting in an Indiana gas station for three hours this afternoon after our bus broke down. And I guess "broke down" isn't the best description since the bus never really stopped on its own, rather our driver said it was shaking and pulled off at the next exit. So yeah, my first experience with the MB was less than stellar. But the service was okay (besides the driver being less than aggressive in getting us info while the repairman was fixing the alignment). The bus was nice, the fair was cheap, and we were making great time until our disruption. Considering flights were being delayed around the country for Thanksgiving week, I'll forgive the mishap. Sitting at the Pilot gas station was actually more enjoyable than sitting in a random concourse (though I wouldn't have minded if they found a gas station that sold booze). Provided it's not a regular occurrence, I'll take my chances on the Megabus. read more

It is outside so if you are traveling in the winter, try to get dropped off when the bus is there so you don't have to wait in the freezing cold. There is enough space for you to get dropped off safely and not feel rushed but there will be other buses around so just keep an eye out. read more

I've taken my fair share of Megabus trips, some great, some frustrating, but have continued to happily use the service. However, today's experience was by far unacceptable. There were a myriad of problems that led me to missing my 6am bus, but the true issue that really warrants this 1 star rating is that when I called the customer service line to try and understand how I can get on the next one, the representative HUNG UP ON ME. I am confident it wasn't an accident, an issue of cell connection on my end, or any other potential "mistake." I was obviously a flustered customer, but by no means yelling, berating, or anything aggressive on the phone. Rather, I was repeating what she told me to make sure I was understanding the situation properly since I was obviously scattered, and more than once she was impatient with me on the phone. I've got a bit of a Megabus claim to fame: back in the Spring of 2006, I was on the first trip they ran from Chicago to Minneapolis. My ticket was $1, and there were 4 people on the bus, including the driver. We made a quick Wendy's stop, but other than that we cruised to MN in about the same time it would have taken me to drive there on my own. Along the way, someone popped Strangers With Candy into the DVD player, and I marveled at this miracle of public transit. Had my Megabus experience ended there, I would have slapped a 5-star review on 'em and called it a day. But like anything awesome in a big city, the word spread quickly. When I took another trip just after Christmas from Minneapolis to Chicago, things were not quite as pleasant as my first run. The bus was 100% full, the driver gave me a hard time about not following the not-well-publicized rule that you can only bring one piece of luggage, and we bafflingly stopped 3 times along the way. But that all said, it's still one of the best, cheap ways to travel around the Midwest. It's generally fast, departs on time, booking is dead easy, and the bus is relatively comfortable. read more

I had a pleasant overnight ride down to St. Louis. Yes, the bus was 45 minutes late showing up to pick up us passengers because the original driver decided not to show up to work (naughty boy) but I still made it to St. Louis before sunrise. I sat on top and it was nice to look down at cars until I dozed off. Amtrak has lost points in my book because of Megabus. I was just happy to smoothly get from A to B in the scheduled amount of time! Boo to two hour train delays Oh and because I'm frugal the price met my approval...The driver even helped me with my luggage and that was something I didn't expect. read more

The only good thing about Megabus is how cheap it is. I take it to Milwaukee and if you book in advance, you can get tickets for as little as $2 but they go up as high as $13. Still not terrible. Other than price, this is the worst method of transportation you could imagine. The drivers typically make you feel like you're going to die, passing everyone and swerving around in a huge bus while going 90 and talking on their cell phones. Once I was coming to Chicago early in the morning and the driver decided to exit 94 at FOSTER AVENUE and try to take Western the rest of the way to Union Station to "avoid traffic." Needless to say I have either been hours late to my destination or fearing for my life whenever I take this bus. It's better than greyhound because you won't be sitting next to a felon, but if you can afford it take the Amtrak, it is way safer and way more reliable. If you're only going to ride it once in a while it's worth it for the money you'll save, especially to the further destinations, but as someone who has used it weekly, I can tell you that the fun of paying $2 for your bus ticket wears off if you pay attention to what's happening or have somewhere to be. read more

Totally a crapshoot. There have been times when I've taken megabus with zero problems and pretty much total convenience. Those times, the bus was precisely on time, the Wifi worked, the driver was friendly, and the luggage and passenger loading was as orderly as could be expected. The trip from Cleveland to Chicago (or vice versa) was as fast, if not faster, than it would have been if I had driven in my own car. Then there are those times when I waited for three hours in the cold, shin-deep in snow on Jackson and Canal for a bus that was cancelled, then delayed, then cancelled again, then delayed again. Those times when there is a crazy mad rush to load luggage that can only be described as chaos and the bus is so crowded and disorderly that the ride is completely uncomfortable. When the driver is rude and seems to take glee in abandoning people at rest stops, or at least threatening to. When I waited AGAIN for three hours in 15 degree weather at 1 am in downtown Cleveland with no way of knowing whether the bus was 2 minutes away, 2 hours away, or not coming at all. Basically, it's a crapshoot, and I think that the uncertainty and risk of misery has to be factored into the low price-- the company seems uninterested in making the experience any better on a consistent basis, so if you're looking for consistency, reliability, or a company that cares about your comfort, safety, and convenience... DEFINITELY don't take megabus. read more

Megabus: It's Not Greyhound. I think this is the best thing I can say about it. You're riding in a bus for six hours or more with a bunch of strangers. It's not going to be a delight. I will say that the Megabus drivers are at least slightly friendlier than the CTA's (so, they won't say anything to you when you say 'hi', but at least they'll look at you). Another bonus is that the fares are cheap. I've taken the Megabus about eight or nine times, and I've never gotten the $1 fare--likely it's just a marketing ploy. Only once has the bus been late, by maybe an hour. Some bus drivers will show movies, too, although I have to say that Megabus drivers' taste in films can be questionable. I did see The Dark Knight a couple of times, but another time it was five straight hours of Tyler Perry. He's a man but--wait for it--he's dressed like a sassy grandma! Ultimately, Megabus is good for college kids and people going on short trips. If you need to get some place exactly on time, drive. Otherwise, grab a book, pack a carry on (the bag check seems to take forever), and head on over to Canal and Jackson. read more

My mother and I have both taken the Megabus consistently through the years, as I live in Chicago and she in Cincinnati, but we will never take it again. Megabus does not care for the safety of its clients, it is consistently late, and makes no attempt to do right for its passengers. The last time I took it, the bus was 3 hours late and every time we called they promised arrival within 20 minutes... I will never take it again after that. Oh... not to mention, the driver was extremely unprofessional and was screaming at passengers. She even threatened to throw a passenger off the bus for no reason. The last time my mom was scheduled to take it, it NEVER SHOWED UP and they NEVER CONTACTED the passengers!!!! Not to mention, mega bus changed the pick up location from a central downtown Cincinnati location to a spot on the edge of town, NO place for shelter (it was 20 degrees out), no where near any kind of building/restaurant, on a desolate gravel road, and out of the travel path of taxis. (Not to mention near a VERY dangerous part of town, I will not be surprised when someone is shot and robbed waiting for the megabus) Megabus - don't be surprised when you are sued because someone is either shot and robbed, gets frost bitten, or some other travesty because you are an extremely careless company with no regards for your clients. read more

Rode from Cleveland to Chicago and then back. The seats had outlets and there was free Wi-Fi (it wasn't the best Wi-Fi ever, but it was available). Seats were comfortable enough. No cup holders or trays on the backs of the seats though. Left on a Friday after work, it was really nice to just be able to sleep on the ride. I would take Megabus again. read more

Megabus offers bus transportation from Chicago to Omaha, and I decided to make the 9+ hour journey from Chicago to Omaha overnight. The bus stop is located across from Union Station on S Canal Street. The bus arrived on-time in Chicago, and there were Megabus employees waiting outside the bus to put travelers' luggage into the storage compartment. Travelers are allowed to store one piece of luggage (~50 lbs) for free. You can store backpacks and shopping bags under the seat in front of you. The driver checked me in: When you arrive at the Megabus stop, make sure you have you the first 6 digits of your Megabus confirmation code with you. You don't need to print out the email confirmation or show it on your phone: the first 6 numbers will do. For travel to Omaha, you can pay an extra fee to reserve seats on the bus, but most people don't do that, so the best and worst seats are available on a first come-first serve basis. You can sit on the top or bottom levels of the bus. The power outlets are located between seats, and both the outlets and the wifi work when the bus is on and running. There is a bathroom on the bottom level, with toilet, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a mirror. The bus makes its first stop in Iowa City, then Des Moines. There is a 15-minute and 30-minute break during the 9 hour journey. The bus stops at a Love's convenience store/gas station attached to a McDonald's and Subway. You can pick up food and use the bathroom here. Overall, this was a smooth onboarding and 9+hour red-eye bus ride to Omaha. I would do it again! read more

In general, I love megabus. It's convenient as can be and gets me home from Chicago to Detroit quicker and cheaper than Amtrak. I have taken it often and will continue to do so. That being said, megabus is not always the best logistically. I was traveling from Chicago to Detroit on Saturday December 20th. When I arrived at about 10 for my 10:30 departure, the street was packed with people waiting for numerous different buses. In chatting with people I found there were lots of delays. Because the pickup is not in a building, megabus provides a "warming bus," but for much of the time I was there it was full of disgruntled delayed passengers. After waiting for hours in the very cold Chicago winter, the Detroit-goers were informed that our bus simply never came. By some weird twist of fate, there was an extra bus (the driver was supposed to pick up people to go to Minneapolis but there were no passengers) and the driver agreed to take us to Detroit. He had never been to Detroit and had no idea how to get there, so we followed the 1:30pm bus. It was completely crazy and we did not arrive into Detroit until after 8pm. Despite all of the misery of the day's events, I was really grateful for the flexible bus driver and was so happy to get on a bus eventually. The mega employees who were there figuring things out also really kept us in high spirits. Megabus also offers refunds for such terrible experiences, which is a plus. First time on Megabus from GR to CHI and back. Both were on time. Made the mistake of sitting on top level on first row. Very bumpy and choppy. Later move to middle part and was much smoother. Going back opted to stay on first level middle part. Learned from first time. Can't say if this is typical of all busses but ride quality is not the best unless the road is super smooth. Otherwise you feel the hiway gaps and bumps badly. I would give it 5 stars if not for this. Overall, taking the bus saves you the hassle of driving , finding parking, parking tickets, etc. And if you time it right the tickets can be really inexpensive . read more

What a terrible way to treat customers!!! I purchase megabus tickets often so that my children and sister can travel back and forth between Chicago and Memphis and we have never really encountered any major issues other than the freezing temperature in the bus but today I have had it with them! Usually the bus is extremely late and you wait for what seems like an eternity but today they came slightly early and my sister missed her bus. Megabus' solution??? Your sister has to buy another ticket, no pay the difference, no use the ticket you already purchased on the later bus, just, too bad you lost your money buy another ticket! Terrible fucking customer service! Sure we could have made it super early and potentially waited an hour with no where to sit or use the restroom if necessary but from all other experiences, we erred on the side of caution and made it on time! I wish I could leave a negative review, not on the actual experience but on the customer service. I can say with confidence that this is the ABSOLUTE WORST customer service I have ever received. I took a round trip from Chicago to Grand Rapids. Chicago to Grand Rapids: Great trip! Went by super quickly, we arrived early, the bus was quiet and incredibly clean. No complaints. Grand Rapids to Chicago: The ticket was scheduled for 9:45 pm when I thought I got 9:45 am. I called the customer service and they said they could "do nothing". The earliest bus leaving for Chicago was at 11:30 am. I asked if they could just switch my ticket to the 11:30 am bus instead of the 9:45 pm bus. They refused and told me I had to PAY FOR ANOTHER TICKET. On the same day. So I would be spending $60 to ride a bus Grand Rapids to Chicago. I cannot believe that this company operates this policy. If you value customer service at all, or even people being mildly helpful STAY AWAY. It would be much better for me to have purchased a cheap airline ticket, which will be my decision in the future. read more

Avoid all cost to take Mega Bus. They definitely don't have it together, lack of clear directions along with mis-informed direction at bus depot, very poor communication most of all incompetent people at their call center to make matters worst they give you BS answers to get you off the phone. Save yourself the deep physical and mental anguish!!! Okay first and foremost a few things why you shouldn't take the bus (the executive summary): 1) It is never on time (arrival or departure). 2) The seats are extremely uncomfortable and barely recline. 3) There is no process for the loading of luggage or passengers and creates a chaotic frenzy. 4) The bus stop is not covered so in less than favorable weather you are exposed to the elements snow, rain, windchill, scorching sun, up until the luggage is loaded and you are boarded on the bus. 4) The entire experience make you extremely miserable and wish you had never traveled in the first place. Okay so here is my story...This bus was scheduled to leave from the Union Station at 2:00pm (1/2/2011). We arrived a little earlier at 1:45pm and unfortunately had to wait miserably until 3:15pm in the freezing freezing freezing cold (yes it was that cold!). This was just insane. There were 100+ people stranded and none of the megabus drivers had a clue as to when the bus to our destination would arrive. Is megabus aware of dispatch, gps locators etc?? Anyway, I don't want to waste my time stressing how disorderly the whole experience was but do want to mention one thing which is if you are considering taking a bus to save yourself a drive or gas or money I recommend you consider again as the inconvenience is not worth it!!! read more

I'm going to be frank here. Megabus used to be a great way to travel. Double decker bus that was affordable, express way to travel. Something happened along the way. Drivers are rude, use foul language, say things like " I don't know how to drive this bus " and are frequently late. Most recently, 40 minutes late leaving the windy city. No shelter in inclement weather so your stuck in wet shoes. Busses are cramped, filled with crying babies and offer little options when stopping. Power outlets broken, no Wi-Fi. I guess it's better than taking the hound. Cheap way to travel. read more

If you have a luggage, I will not take it off for you, you will have to get it from Toledo yourself." Wow. This was announced by our driver as we board the 3:15 pm megabus from Ann Arbor to Chicago, March 3, 2018. She also asked a mother to silence her baby from crying, while not a single passenger complained. read more

Took Mega Bus to Normal since track work was causing Amtrak to run buses along the route anyway and the Mega Bus time was more convenient. I've taken Mego Bus probably 5 other times to Normal but not recently. Out of all my trips, they've left on time once, I believe. This time the 4:30 bus didn't leave until 6:00, the same time the Amtrak bus was schedule to leave! And, it cost me an extra $5 over what my Amtrak fare would have been. Plus, the bus driver seemed cranky and disgruntled . . . I prefer my drivers gruntled. In addition when buying your ticket online you can check a box to be notified of service disruptions for your trip. Obviously, 1 1/2 hours isn't a sigificant disruption since I didn't receive a text. There's usually no employees around to answer questions and the pickup spot has no covered area. If it was raining, I would have had to stand in the rain for almost 2 hours! Amtrak isn't perfect but i'd recommend them over Mega Bus unless there's a significant fare difference. read more

A nightmare. I traveled from Chicago to St. Louis using Megabus and the trip was great. Fast forward to my departure from St. Louis to Chicago. My scheduled departure time was for 2:25pm (cst). I got a text at 2:23 alerting me that the bus was going to be up to 90 minutes late. ong story short, I voluntarily left the bus depot at 8:30 pm. I was told by Shay Mare in customer service that the bus will arrive at 6:25 then 7:25 pm. Then last eta was for 11pm cst. Customer was very rude. I thought I was talking to a robot because their customer service agents go so close to their script that it seems robotic. OI ended up having to spend an extra day in St. Louis and now as I'm waiting, I was just told by Megabus that bus leaving for Chicago will be a hour late. Avoid Megabus at all costs. For my trouble, all I am getting back is my one way refund for $14.00. Put the word out!!!!!! read more

Megabus is a neccessary evil for me as it allows me to travel between Chicago and Detroit very cheaply, but it isn't the best service. I first bought a ticket in Janauary for a March trip for my fiance and I round tip for $1. Yes $1. it was free for me, 50 cents for him, and 50 cents for a booking fee!!! My first actaul trip was in February when my fiance's grandma died and we needed to get cheap last minute tickets to Detroit for the weekend. We paid $30 for both of us round trip. The bus was almost an hour late, but the rest of the ride was okay and we had a driver who was able to make up some time and get us in only 40 minutes late. On the return, the bus was 20 minutes late. The next trip was the $1 trip in March to take care of some stuff for our wedding. Our plans changed and I had to come in separately from my fiance and pay an extra $15 to change the ticket. Still a good deal though. My bus on Thursday was early, his bus on Friday was TWO AND A HALF HOURS late. Our return bus was 20 minutes late again. I don't understand how the bus can be late when it is the first bus of the day! We took another trip in April for $60 for both of us round trip. 20 minutes late on the way there and 20 minutes late on the way back. This trip would have been okay except for a few things - the bus stalled on the way back over 3 times, the bus was filled with kids, and they have now added a stop in Ann Arbor and made the bus leave from Chicago an hour later, so you get in after 11 at night and get stuck in post-work traffic getting out of the city. Additional trips since then have varied - sometimes 30 minutes late, sometimes on time. It's a good cheap option, but as far as the quality - I think you get what you pay for. read more
