Crisp pommes was a welcome addition. The cheese croquettes were also perfect. A bit speedy, but on par for what you pay for croquettes in Belgium. Finally, the waffles were divine. My family spent the remainder if the trip trying to find waffles that lived up to this one. Light and fluffy and crisp on the outside. Highly recommended and the service was professional, friendly and they do speak at least English and Spanish in addition to Flemish.

There were other things on it too that looked like a thinly sliced cucumber and another type of dressing. Highly recommended for a quick, good, inexpensive meal. Staff was friendly.

Margritt stands out thanks to its large window that frames an aesthetically pleasing minimalist bar where a La Marzocco FB80 is proudly displayed. A very welcoming lady greets us from behind the bar as we walk in. As we approach the bar to order, the barista tells us to kindly take a seat, she would take our order at the table in just a little while. We walk through the small but cozy shop, and with the language barrier half-way down we order our drinks and toast to start the day. The meergranenbrood, which I assume to be multi-grain bread, is a delightful treat spread with jam. The lattes and cappuccinos taste great, frothy, warm, and sweet, drunk in that early rainy morning. The espresso is a welcome return to what is served in specialty coffee shops, but might have still needed a bit more of fine tuning. We walk out into the rainy day, delighted and satisfied. The lady who doubles as a barista and owner wishes us well as we keep admiring the lovely little shop. We wish her the best as we take our leave, hoping one day we'll come back to relive this moment.

The hot chocolate was also lovely - rich, chocolatey and filling. The service is friendly and food is served at reasonable speed. To be fair the salad was big but I do think the addition of salad actually makes the place a little on the expensive side. Without this the sandwiches were good value. They were tasty and made with good quality bread and filled with plenty of mozzarella & pesto. The cakes looked amazing but we didn't have room!

After a minute or two of stating, he didn't... She stomped away and was heavy handed with the coffee on the counter and sloppy with the 2nd beer, she finally gave him. Yes, it is in a charming old building that was once used to treat people with leprosy, and though it has stood the test of time, it looks like it could crumble within the first minute of any natural disaster. I have often been in this building, but I've gone through the door on the right, which is another bar, slightly less charming. Sidling past the smokers on the terrace huddled close to the door for warmth, you go down a few steps and enter into a warm, gothic, comforting ambiance. Downstairs there are dark wooden dining tables, high tables, stools and the bar. You have locals and students (some of them foreigners) clustered in various groups, some playing Friday night chess at high tables, others making their way up the stairs trying not to spill their beers. The beauty of this place is in the lighting: most, if not all, seating areas glow with candlelight, and the wax drips down the old alcohol bottles on which they are perched. My favorite spot is upstairs, where there are couches and a more lounge-like atmosphere, still dark and mysterious in ambiance, still glowing with soft light. You shed your coat and settle in, and you don't want to leave (no wonder it's so hard to snag a spot to sit!)--especially in the winter. We didn't order food or snacks so I can't speak to that, but we drank a few beers downstairs our first night in town, and then came back later in the weekend for rum-spiced hot chocolate and tea on the upstairs couches. The prices are reasonable, the servers friendly, the drinks good--but the atmosphere from another era is really what this place is about.
