Cafe Max is buzzing with traditionally clad waiters who whisk past in a flurry of aprons and silver jugs. The menu is extensive, offering mostly afternoon treats such as beignets, waffles, pancakes and icecream sundaes. Each comes in an array of permutations: with avocaat, strawberries, fruit salad, cream, chocolate sauce and jam (well, the pancakes come with jam). In addition there are lots of fruit and flavoured teas, coffees and other drinks.
Service is quick and efficient, and afternoon tea here is a fine treat. Now that the exchange rate against the Euro has worsened, it's not a cheap experience, but still highly worthwhile. You may need to tackle a fair few cobbled street afterwards to work off the calories.
