Cafe Labath is a sparsely-decorated, cozy breakfast spot with a simple menu not far from the city center, which I recently discovered thanks to a friend who lives nearby. For breakfast, it's perfect: my boyfriend and I each have the granola (a small bowl with only slightly sweetened oats and yogurt, topped with various fruits and berries) and split a hard-boiled egg, served in a tiny cup accompanied by wholegrain bread and a pat of butter.
The teas are simple but they warm the belly, and the coffee tastes great. My favorite is the honey latte, served in a medium glass with just a drizzle of honey on top for sweetness.
The ambiance is bare, almost Scandinavian, with accents of wood, brown and red tiles, and plants hanging off the spiral staircase in the corner. Well-known tunes from a past era round out the whole experience. It could come off a little hipster, as one reviewer said, though I found the staff to be down to earth in a Pacific Northwest way. Very friendly, attentive and chatty only if you feel like small talk.
In true hipster style, they added an item to the menu the last time we were there: a jazzed up avocado toast with hummus, roasted red and yellow peppers and mixed lettuce topped with a perfectly poached egg. We also tried the "apple cinnamon bowl" which is made up of overnight oats, shaved apple, and banana chips. It was all excellent!
The one thing I take issue with are the prices, which are more suited for Paris than the quaint city of Ghent!
