    Café Labath, Gent.

As soon as you get in, you can't help but notice the inebriating smell of toasted coffee beans. Nice vibe, excellent coffee and warm atmosphere. Interesting magazines to read and nice background music to go with. We had a Chocolate Girl and a Latte, from the wide choice of warm drinks. Gent style at its best.

This is probably the best coffee I've had all year. We actually stayed at the owner's air bnb, and got coffees everyday we were there. I don't drink black coffee usually but my partner got it and it was so so good! You could actually taste different flavor notes like a fine wine or a good beer. It was floral, and fruity and wonderful. I can also say the cappuccino, late and flat white are absolutely gorgeous cups of coffee too. The staff are also super friendly (and speak English if you're in need of that that like me) and the owner is very nice and committed to sustainability and the environment which makes the whole experience a little more guilt free. He actually goes to Columbia to source the coffee! Like I said we travel a fair amount abroad and in the US (4 countries this year), and this is without a doubt the best coffee we've had this year. If you're in Ghent treat yourself!

A very poplar cafe, with good drinks...but the service is always sloooww. And the food menu is really lacking, watery soup with bread or toast with humus pretty boring for a place with such nice drinks! Every time I'm here there are like 2 croissants or 2 brownies soooo not much

We stayed at the Air BnB upstairs and the staff an owner could not have been better hosts. They made us reservations at restaurants etc, and generally took great care of us! Coffee and pastries were very good.

    Americano and a "meh" cheesecake.

However, I wasn't all that keen on having just tea I preferred a coffee, so that is what I ended up grabbing, and not surprisingly it was, like most (though not all), coffee shops, really good. They even had an outdoor area out the back, though the main part of the cafe was the inside, and they also did a variety of dishes. However, they also were more than happen for me to simply come in and have a coffee out the back. Okay, they were a little slow, but since there were quite a few people here (particularly since this place is pretty popular, and highly rated).

The remainder is given over to two main rooms for the cafe. Cafe Max is buzzing with traditionally clad waiters who whisk past in a flurry of aprons and silver jugs. The menu is extensive, offering mostly afternoon treats such as beignets, waffles, pancakes and icecream sundaes. Each comes in an array of permutations: with avocaat, strawberries, fruit salad, cream, chocolate sauce and jam (well, the pancakes come with jam). In addition there are lots of fruit and flavoured teas, coffees and other drinks. Service is quick and efficient, and afternoon tea here is a fine treat. Now that the exchange rate against the Euro has worsened, it's not a cheap experience, but still highly worthwhile. You may need to tackle a fair few cobbled street afterwards to work off the calories.
