Surprised to see this place still in business. Hired them for a home remodel almost 20 years ago and should have written a review on how awful this company was back then. I had some work done recently and all of the horrible workmanship this company did came back to light. Guessing the crew has completely turned over since then, but if "Cook" is still working there you shouldn't let him in your house. Awful work. Unprofessional and sloppy. Once, one of his guys was putting up a track fixture. They didn't have the proper 'connectors' so they decided to duct tape 2 segments of track together with a piece of electrical conduit. It's now nearly two months later and I have a voicemail from Meyer Electrical. They want to know how I plan on handling my outstanding (and overdue) balance. My whaaat? I call for an explanation. Instead, I get Diana. Can she explain the charge? No, she can't. She can, however, dish out an impressive amount of disdain and disinterest. She invites me to examine the bill she emailed me. I received no such bill. I asked her which email address she used and she reads off a misspelling of my name. Assuming Meyer did not get an email bounce-back and there actually is someone out there at notmyname (at) gmail (dot) com now in possession of my personal details, let's review the nature of the services rendered. The work took place at my condo. Ipso facto, Diana & team had my mailing address. Mistakes happen, so I'm willing to move forward in resolving this issue now that the matter of whether or not I'm some late-bill-paying deadbeat has been cleared up. Diana is not game; she continues to be quite surly. I ask to speak to someone else at the office. Instead, she hangs up on me. I call back, informing Diana that we must have been disconnected. Oblivious to euphemism, she assures me that she'd hung up on me and proceeds to do so again. OK. I have better things to do than relive some Jr. High-level drama with Diana, so I email John, the main man in charge at Meyer and ask him to call me whenever he has a chance so I can understand this new charge. He responds (via email) that he's sorry to hear I'm unhappy and that he'd like to know the full "nature of [my] complaint". I assure him I will fill him in on it if he'd just call. No call. I ask again. Still no call. I do, however, get a pdf copy the bill previously sent to the wrong email address. And I pay it. Not because I have any greater understanding of its genesis but rather because I just want to be done with Meyer. While I was very pleased with Erick and would have hired him again in an instant, the mere thought of further contact with Diana gives me hives. read more

My condo was seeking to bid out an overall electrical upgrade to the building. Meyer came through an office recommendation. Without a doubt, this was the most professional and, interestingly, the cheapest electrician that bid out the project (cheaper by several thousands, I might add). I know the old rule of thumb is to use the middle bid when awarding a contract, but in this case, Meyer is A+ across the board. From Cook, their head electrician, to the office staff, this company was accommodating, courteous, and professional. The work they did was top notch as well. They worked on our time frame, came back during the weekend to finish portions of the project, procured the proper permits, and even hooked up a generator for one of the condo's residents who works from home. One note that I need to make is that this is a non-union business. If you are looking for a union contractor, you'll have to look elsewhere. But being a non-union shop is part of the way in which they keep down their costs. EDIT: So we had some additional work done in our unit and the results weren't as good as the time before. A few of the more minor issues included some smoking in the house and cleanliness issues. I understand with contracting it happens, but I wasn't too pleased by that. Moreover, it took a couple months to figure out scope issues and finally, rather than having them come out again, we just had them knock that price off the bill. We had such a great experience the first time around, but this time just seemed to be pulling teeth to get answers. I still have a lot of respect for Cook and Claudia, but some of the other issues force me to knock some stars off. read more

Great guys, great work. I needed a chandelier installed and found Meyer here on yelp. They were able to fit me in quickly and arrived 1/2 an hour early to do the work. They worked quickly, were very friendly and did a great job. I had a ceiling fan that needed to be removed as well. They said it would be no problem to just do it real quick after they finished the chandelier. After they took the fan down they ran out to the van and brought up a plate to cover the box that the fan was attached to. And it was all done for the (pleasantly low) original estimate. My experience has been very positive. Thye are reliable and did a great job. I have been upgrading the elctrical in my 3 flat in Wicker Park and they have done a great job even with fixing the crappy job that a Handyman company did before them. I'm not sure if the price is comparable with other contractors but with Electrical Work you do not want the cheapest bidder. Meyer has been cheaper than 2 separate Handyman Companies I have used. For me, the bottomline is that they do better work, are less expensive and they are nice people. read more

In a word, awesome. Woke up to the smell of burning rubber, then a light flickered and went out. When we went to replace it, the switch sparked at me and I realized the smoke and burning rubber smell was coming from the switch. I called one place and asked if they had any electricians available to come out today and they said they're running 1 - 1 1/2 weeks for appointments. Yeah, that won't help. Called Meyer - spoke with Melody who reassured me that I wasn't a complete wuss for not wanting to open the panel and change the smoking switch myself. She called me back and told me someone would be here in 15 minutes. About 15 minutes later, here they were, switch changed, no sparks and I have light. Cost of service call including 1/2 hour of labor and switch $125 Cost of not being electrocuted: priceless read more

** WORST EXPERIENCE ** On 12/31/10, Meyer Electrical came over to my condo to mount a flat screen Tv. I thought it would be simple and they advised me they had completed the job multiple times before. After mounting the Tv, wires were not hidden and outlet plates that were removed, were not put back into place. They advised the job would cost between $150 & $300, depending on my walls and outlets. When they left, I was emailed a bill for $450. I wouldn't mind paying $600, if it looked good. But the work performed would warrant a cost around $150. The Tv is functional, but I paid for a professional to come in so it would look professional. I was disappointed in the service. When I expressed my disappointment, I was advised that they knew the work was poor and would work with me to make it right. After calling 3 times since that conversation and leaving their office at least 2 voice mails, I received an email from John Meyer today, 3/13/11, stating he doesn't plan on doing anything to rectify the situation and asked me to pay the bill with an extra service charge. I'm having the work redone. It's was a huge waste of time and money - save yourself the trouble, don't use Meyer. read more

In a sentence: horrid customer service, ok work. To borrow (approximate) words from another poster on yelp, "Electricians are notorious for not returning phone calls." Meyer Electrical fully meets this expectation. First, our condo association tried to get them out to do some work last summer. They didn't show up at all on time. No phone call that day saying, "Hey, we're running late." I tried to call the office - no answer. I tried to call the office later, no answer. Where are these guys? Finally, I'm on my way out the door 2 hours after the scheduled time. Up pulls the electrician. I politely tell him to come back another time, call up and cancel the whole project. They respond by giving me a discounted rate for partial work (really not worth it); I agree. Again, they fail to show up at a reasonable time from when they said they would. They eventually did the work, but there was almost no further communication about what they were doing, and no opportunity to review of what was done. Second, I tried to contact them recently (2013) because I know they are decently priced (though not the cheapest). I just need them to set up a time to give me an estimate. No phone call still; no surprise there. Perhaps I just had two bad experiences, though I suggest using at your own peril. read more

I hired Meyer to fix some bad wiring, install recessed lighting and upgrade some fixtures in my condo. The employees and the owner, John, worked with me on several revisions of the initial estimate to make sure that the job scope was described in detail and to make some changes that I requested. The project did take a bit longer than expected (4 days instead of 2), but the final invoice was fair (i.e. it didn't simply "double" the 2-day estimate) and it described in detail the work that was done. I found Meyer to be professional and easy to work with, and I would recommend them to anyone needing electrical work done on their home. read more

I'm thrilled to have found Meyer Electrical and Cook! Two weeks ago Cook found, and fixed, the cause of my range and microwave failures - and within 30 minutes! Ten days later I'm having a new dishwasher installed,. The Abt guys tell me that I need electrical work done before they can complete the installation. I called Meyer to schedule the work, Cook is in, says he can come right over. When does that happen? So tonight I have a brand new dishwasher up and running. I have used Meyer Electric for twenty years. I fully gutted and rehabbed a house in Wicker Park in the late 90's. Meyer Electric wasn't the cheapest of the five bids I solicited nor were they the most expensive. Their work was done quickly and efficiently. John was quite through in locating of all the fixtures and outlets, as our project had computer cabling, whole house audio/video and home automation requirements. I have used them since then for other projects we needed to complete. The electricians have always arrived on time, if not early. The work has been top notch. I have not had a single problem with the the numerous jobs after they were completed, that's why they get a great rating. read more

Background: Having a dining room light moved about 2 feet and hanging a new chandelier. The good: Called and they promptly scheduled an electrician to come to my home to provide an estimate. The electrician, Cook, was prompt (on time) and very professional. The bad: The quote was emailed to me from the office later that day. The price was 2.5 times that of other estimates I had received. I emailed back asking "why"? No response. The estimate had alot of charges that seemed excessive to me (several hundred to set up scaffolding...seems to me a ladder would work just fine?). Did not select them as the pricing was excessive and they never answered my question as to why it was so much more expensive than other estimates. read more

A long overdue review. In the past year, we had Meyer Electric add a fixture to a bedroom, install additional recessed lighting, and fix some other issues we had with our condo. They were prompt for every appointment and estimate. Their offices were always friendly on the phone. They sent estimates in a timely manner, answered all of our questions and took the time to explain the how and the why of what they were doing. I had a non-working electric wall-mounted heater in my office. Called up this local company out of the blue and talked with John. He came over the same day, Friday, and showed me that the fan had quit working. He said he would go back to the office and call me about getting a replacement. The call came an hour after he left, and on Monday two guys showed up on time and replaced the heater. Labor cost was what I expected with 2 different visits. My employees are nice and warm and I am extremely pleased with my experience. read more

I am completely at a loss when it comes to electrical issues. My ceiling fan stopped working suddenly, and after calls to 3 other electricians, who, after 2 days, didn't call back, I read these reviews and decided to try them. I left a message at 7:30am today. Diana called me back within an hour. By 10:30am, the electrician was in my house. He was really young, but really friendly, professional, and thorough. He couldn't really find out what was wrong with my fan, but got it to start working again. Here is the part that is important. An hour after the electrician left, the fan stopped working again. So, I called back. They sent the same electrician back with his supervisor a few hours later. I watched as the supervisor showed the younger electrician (and me!) what the problem was (apparently, it wasn't a terribly common problem). The issue has now been resolved, and there was no further charge. I was really worried, as I sometimes feel that when a contractor sees you have limited knowledge, they use that as an opportunity to make money off of you. This was not this case. I will never use this company again. I was charged over $300 for a 15 minute estimate even though the company was already hired. A crew of 4 was sent out without obtaining the necessary clearances, and I received a bill for their error. After the work was done, switches malfunctioned, outlets which previously worked did not work, plaster was damaged, and outlets were not installed after being part of the "estimate". My objections to being overcharged and to the shoddy workmanship had no response but to send the remaining bill for collection. read more

so i was looking to get a garbage disposal put in and turns out i needed power and some switches changed. at first i called a handyman who said i should call in an electrician to get the job done. i called meyer based on some reviews on yelp and man, it was a great choice. they picked up promptly, talked about the issue, talked about my budget and they were really understanding of how much i was willing to spend and worked with me to make it work. the guy that came out was extremely professional, quick and did a incredible job all for a GREAT price. i really cant say enough about these guys - really professional, priced well and nice guys. highly recommend! read more
