We just wanted to play a new course that was challenging...well, we got what we were asking for. The thing that brought us in was the length of the course...lots of par 4s that stretched 500-600ft. As the name suggests, it's very flat and if you don't throw very far, you may want to kill yourself. As a course it's not that difficult. There's some technical shots to be made, but at the end of the day if you can stay low, controlled, and fly far, you'll do alright. The trickiest parts of the course are placed around the creek that runs through the course. I almost lost a disc on hole one cause I ran my upshot too far. You'll encounter the Kern River on later holes and it gives you some of the best views in the park. While we came on a cold winter day, the park felt like a picturesque fall day with brown leaves all over the place and barren trees. This course is definitely worth a road trip if you wanna experience something a little different and challenging.

It is one of two courses located in the park (the other course being Shark Tooth Mountain). Suicide Flats is an 18 hole course laid out on mostly flat grassy land dotted with big and small trees that form variable obstacles. The course also does include some holes with water hazards. It's an extremely long course booking in between 7,000 and 8,000 feet with a few par 4 holes and the rest being par 3. Made it out on an early Sunday morning around 7 AM. With only one group in front of us (I had my old man along from the round), it was relatively quiet and laid back. The main downside to this early morning round was the extremely wet grass. According to some locals we talked to after the round, it's wet in the morning all year long...leaving me to believe that getting a dry round in only happens mid afternoon or during the hot months. But who wants to play here when it's 90 plus degrees? Navigating the course was a bit tough as I forgot to print out a map (used my phone to bring up a picture of the map) and some tee signs were missing. Tee pads were all concrete and with the wet grass made for slippery drives. Here's a few other things I noticed during my round : - If you have a good roller throw, it can come in handy here on some of the longer and more wooded holes. Although on mornings with the grass being so wet, I'm not sure rollers are that good of an option. - I was beyond done by the end of the round, being how the course is extremely long. If you decide to tackle both Suicide Flats and Shark Tooth Mountain in one day, be ready for a workout. Especially since I hear Shark Tooth is more a hike than a stroll in the park. There is camping nearby, so I would suggest maybe playing one course a day or at the very least spread out your rounds throughout the day. - For some odd reason, there are a lot of Farrel cats and peacocks wondering around in this park. - Water hazard holes could lead you to lose discs. Water on some (in particular Hole 6) are quite deep and murky. Lost a yellow blizzard Katana that was floating on the surface not too far from land...did not chance getting anywhere near the water since it looked scummy. In all, Suicide Flats is a challenging course that will force you to step up your drives and power out your throws to meet the demand of the distances on many holes. I will admit that this course wasn't too exciting to play. Very little as far as variance of elevation and layout of the course. If I didn't have my dad with me, I would have tackled Shark Tooth Mtn but for what it is, Suicide Flats is worthy of at least one round of play.

The park's 8.1 acres include a number of different recreational options sure to appeal to a variety of park goers. There are are 5 individual picnic tables spaced out around the park, each with its own charcoal grill and trash can. There is also a covered pavilion with five long picnic tables and two double sized charcoal grills. This picnic shelter, with a capacity of 80 people, can be reserved for your group by calling the NOR Recreation & Parks District at 392-2010 and filling out an application which must be approved. The cost is very reasonable at only $15 per hour, with a 3 hour minimum reservation. Applications can be downloaded here http://norfun.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/FR-100-Use-of-Facility-Online-Packet.pdf There are public restrooms at the North end of the park, near the picnic shelter. There are 4 individual bathrooms, each of which contains a toilet, urinal, sink, and mirror. They were relatively clean on the day I visited. All of the restrooms are handicapped accessible. There are two different play areas for children just South of the picnic shelter, one for the younger children and one for older ones. The playground for younger children, ages 2-5, has swings that hold the children in place, since they can't hold on by themselves. There is also a play structure sized just right for the little ones with areas to climb, a shaded castle area, and several slides. There are several benches positioned perfectly for parents and guardians to relax and watch the little ones play. Separated by a walkway, is the playground for older school-age children, ages 5-12. There are regular swings and a much larger play structure for them to enjoy. There is also a water park just East of the picnic shelter with three different structures that spray water when a large button is pressed. It is July, and the water play area is currently operational from 12:00-4:00 pm daily, in spite of the drought. If you need to cool off, this is a great place to do it. There is a 9 hole disc golf course located at this park that would appeal to adults and teenagers. I've never played disc golf, and I had only seen these courses back East and in the Midwest before this, but it looked like a whole lot of fun and uses flying discs (frisbees). For more information check it out here: http://www.pdga.com/introduction There is also a basketball court where you can play full court. The courts, hoops, and nets appear to be in good condition. There is also a lot of green grass, and even a few young shade trees. There is even an area where you can park and lock up your bike if you'd like to go green and cycle over to the park. There's a small parking lot at the North end of the park, accessible from Krebs Rd. San Lauren Park is not large or fancy, but there's a little something for everyone here. Come check it out!

The dog park is not in the "main" area, but under the power lines along Krebs Dr. The area is a lot smaller than our usual Centennial park, but big enough for her to run around at full speed. There's also a nice little bench you can sit on when you're too tired of running after your dog. Area is clean. No stray dog poops. Wish we had found this earlier! It just stinks that I live far away from this park. Yay for Mohawk going all the way from Rosedale Hwy to Hageman now, so you can turn on to Krebs Dr. directly from Mohawk.

The staircase was the first feature I noticed the first time I passed by at night. I could see something in the distance that resembled the Mulholland aqueduct cascading down the Newhall Pass near my home. So on this beautiful Wednesday evening, we headed to Central Park to "investigate" the lights at the back of the park. How cool! We arrived just as the late afternoon sun was descending o're the horizon and the clouds were moving from white to pink, to grey, to pink, to peach, to orange. Gorgeous! Perfect timing to see the beginning of the "River of Lights" that caught my eye. A beautiful array of 214 programmable lights that seem to "flow" in ever changing colors from the flag pole at the top of the exercise staircase down, down, down the 172 steps and into a main plaza, lined with benches and trees, to encircle a lovely 2025 art installation entitled "When Cloud Met A Cloud" by Sujin Lim. The overall effect is rain falling, cascading down and evaporating into the clouds to cycle again. It's so pretty! Along the plaza are educational displays from the SCV water Agency, highlighting the importance water has in our lives. It does INDEED resemble what we in the SFV see on the "other side" of these hills, as the aqueduct flows into our valley. I may not attempt this staircase walk anytime soon, but we did enjoy walking the forged trail around the park and seeing all the people - and lots of free parking! - utilizing this space. Signs are posted to remind you to watch for rattlesnakes, so hike with care. Cheers! "CC"
