VMP is a large, 97-acre, regional park in the neighborhood of Sylmar section of LA. Its green grass is perfectly manicured and watered. Moreover, you'll find picnic areas, children's play areas, camping areas, disc golf courses, a pavilion, washrooms, hiking trails, parking lots, and a recreation building. The female sheriff at the main entrance expressed that they close the doors at 6 PM because they want to maintain the park safe however with their actions they close the doors and at some point leave people stranded, not knowing how to exit the park so this doesn't make any sense . They close the main parking entrance at 6:00pm. The sheriffs waste no time. Do not leave your cars parked in the parking lot because they start issuing tickets after 7ish and then they lock the doors fully. My friend got a ticket around 7:30pm. And luckily she had just made the cut to exit the park. By 7:50 gates closed, people and cars trapped inside not knowing where to go. How is this okay ? read more

Great park lots of open space, playgrounds for the kids, has attached disk golf course and a nice hiking trail close by. Also had plenty of tables and bathrooms. This review is for the disc golf course only. Here goes: "Where's the basket?" I said to myself on almost every single hole. Yah, they are pretty hidden, at least on the first 9 which is all I had time to play, so I can't speak about the back 9. I several holes I had to take a walk before I launched off because I had no idea where the basket was in relation to the launchpad. One of the locals said they often move the baskets, but he'd never seen them placed so inconspicuously as they were today. All that being said, I absolutely loved this course. It's so beautiful with the mature trees. It really feels like you'rere at a mountain retreat...and yes, those trees will want to bump into your disc every chance they get! When you enter the park, take a left and you'll see a sign that says, "disc golf parking." How cool. Disc golf has its own parking lot. Yes, you'll be frustrated at times trying to find the baskets and the launchpads but it's worth it. I highly recommend using the Udisc app to navigate. Even then it might not be easy, but it will help. Some holes have more than one launchpad, just like regular golf where there's a pro tee and a regular tee. Not all the holes had them. I wish there were some simple arrows at each basket pointing the way to the next launchpad. It would be easy to do. It's free to enter the park, even on weekends and holidays. I can't wait to go back and try the entire course. This one is a gem! read more

*Disc Golf Course Review* Awesome course! Have heard many things about this 18-hole but finally had the opportunity to fully play on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The course is easy to navigate with UDisc app and tees are all concrete padded. Baskets are basic and most have a cone or some other marker to help distinguish. Just enough trees to make the course challenging but able to easily retrieve discs. Only recommendation is a renewal of all the tee signs. Looks like some punk kids beat up a few of them. read more

The trail here at Veterans Memorial Park is the main reason I come here. The park itself is a well maintained, clean, and spacious park with areas to host parties, and a disc golf course. On the northern east end of the park is where the trail is. It is a simple enough trail to, there's a regular trail to the left, & a fire road trail to the right, I believe around 2 miles (on the fire road) both trails meet up. Around the 2 mile point on the fire road you've already gained 1,000 feet of elevation. Granted the fire road is "easier" compared to the regular trail, it's still a pretty challenging hike for beginners, but still doable. Around the 3 mile point of the trail your find a bench where most people finish off their hike before heading back down. The fire road goes up 2 more miles for a 5 mile total before it splits up into two different trails. I've gone out an additional mile in both directions, but have yet to go out as far as they lead. I have a few friends that told me the left side eventually leads out near to the 14 freeway. If you go all the way up to the 5 mile point you will have gone up around 2,000 feet of elevation. From the the other 2 trails there even out a little bit as far as elevation climbs go. Up around miles 3, and 4 of the trail you'll have some amazing views of the San Fernando valley. If you're looking for a trail to help jumpstart or boost up your current fitness level this trail is a good place to start. Since the trail go up & up, you can set some goals to make it up a bit further each time you go, and eventually catch some great views of the city. read more

If you're a monthly visitor to this disc golf course, you know they're doing a great job, because this course plays harder and harder just about every time you take it on. The Giants I speak of are the foreboding eucalyptus and pine trees that dot the course...and the legendary disc golfers whose names are synonymous with Sylmar Disc Golf; Steve Rico, Jerry Goff, Mike Byrne, Gary Sandoval, Rick Hoffa and many more. Having trouble NAVIGATING? It's as easy as RED, WHITE & BLUE. That's the basket-order designation and nod to America's proud vets here at Veteran's Memorial Park. Hole 1 = Red Basket; Hole 2 = White Basket; Hole 3 = Blue Blue Basket...and so on through 18. Each time I visit, I don't know what I'm going to be faced with, thanks to the course managers that keep Sylmar's pin positions moving to the rhythm of some unknowable dance...a dance that sometimes allows an average player to shoot okay - but at other times, will demolish you. That's because there are seasoned pros involved in the process...and they love to throw big. My career average (according to UDisc with over 500 rounds logged) is -2.69. When I arrive here and find the baskets in their "long" positions, I'm lucky to get out of here @ EVEN. Other times, I'll find the "short" positions and can manage something under par. Both of these - "long" and "short" profiles - offer a nice mix of hole-lengths and shot-shapes, but the overall feel, from what I can ascertain, is long or short. Regardless...either way you happen to find it, it's always CHALLENGING and hugely ENJOYABLE. Go. Get out and throw Sylmar Disc Golf Course...and walk amongst the giants. read more

This is a wonderful place to play disc golf! There are several trees that provide shade and they have many benches for you to keep score. The people we encountered were very friendly. The park is kept up very well and there is ample parking for everyone. There were lots of birds here and they were hanging out on the drinking fountains; I would suggest bringing your own water to stay hydrated. I will be back because this was a peaceful park and the signs were very helpful in finding the net for disc golf! I rather enjoyed the mapping of the park and found it easy to navigate. I got a lovely workout from playing the first 9 because they had hills and it was a delightful experience. Clearly the park is used by many families and others for a wide variety of gatherings and events, but I use the park for hiking. You can follow the fire roads or go the more rugged and steeper routes as well if you really want a great workout. Well kept and well run facilities and open dawn to dusk. read more

I have been going to this park for decades. I like it a lot more than the nearby El Cariso Park. This park has so much shade and the grass is always in good shape compared to other local parks. The grass tends tp be very green and so comfy to walk on. I recently went for a picnic with the family and had a wonderful time. They have a lot of trees so it is pretty easy to find a spot with shade. I also think there is a ton of parking so that is not a concern. The park is basically on a hill so you may not find too many completely flat spots but I like being on a slight incline. It is a beautifully relaxing park. read more

And a little pro-tip, there are rattle snakes here and if your going to blast music out of your phone or Bluetooth speaker, guess what? You're not going to hear the snakes rattle. read more

Veterans Memorial Park - Stop leaving your trash on the trail. - Parks Near Me - Sylmar, California

This trail is a great trail to get training or for an awesome workout. There are various trails you can take at the beginning. You can do the dirt path which is steep incline, quick elevation gain and strenuous or the paved winding road which is steady with incline. Or another option is to do the first part of the dirt path and it meets up to the pave road. If you decide to continue your hike via the dirt path please prepare and bring water and snacks as well as a hat. Once at the top you have amazing views of the San Fernando Valley. Here you are able to connect to the paved fire road and do the loop trail and work you way back down. If i remember correct we hiked between 8-9 miles. Remember we did the dirt path all the way up to the top of the mountain and than connected at the fire road and hiked it all the way down. I do see a lot of people working out here so if you are looking for solitude the first part of the hike is not it. If you plan on hiking all the way up the mountain than you will find that solitude and peacefulness. parking is at the beginning of the park and there are two big parking lots. My absolute favorite park to hike. There are a few trails but I have only tried two of them. I've heard there is one that leads to the waterfall which sounds amazing! The first time I hiked here I basically dragged myself up on my hands and knees. Now I wouldn't call myself experienced but I can manage the hike, my worst time being 29 minutes and my best 15 minutes. Once at the top the view is breathtaking. The park itself is nice as well, really great for walking and for dogs too! It's pretty scenic and there are always plenty of parties on the weekends. Along with the frisbee obstacle portion of the park; this place has it all. Parking can be found inside the park but the police do notify people to leave once it starts getting dark. I usually park by the closest residential area because they do issue tickets inside. read more

One of my favorite parks in the area! The entrances are pretty hidden if you're not from the area but gps will certainly get you there. I have been coming to this park since I was a kid. It's a pretty big park with many amenities! I usually come here to hike but I have also done disc golfing a few times which is a lot of fun! The park is very clean and well maintained. There are two entrances to the hike paved road, one is through the park and the other is in a residential area. Right now due to covid only the residential entrance was open. Once on the paved road there's an uphill dirt path that many climb to get to the top but there is also the paved road option for a less strenuous hike. I've done both many times. The views from the first plateau are amazing during sunset. The rest of the hike is mostly uphill after that and I highly recommend going early in the morning to do the entire hike up. read more

Beautiful expansive and fairly calm park, few people, mostly locals walking their dogs and the occasional birthday party in the picnic shelters. Plenty of parking too and great access to some good hiking trails that will give beautiful veiws of Sylmar and the rest of the Valley. read more

Just moved to the area and it's a pretty cool spot to go hiking. Fair warning this trail can go on forever... so make sure you know where you want to go and where you're going to turn around. It's a pretty tough hike so be prepared to work!! Bring a backpack or something to carry water so you're prepared and keep yourself hydrated. read more

Best to come and get a quick cardio/leg workout. I have been coming here since 2009. I have never gone all the way to the very tail end. I always go up to the first top flat area and run the fire road down. On a good day it'll take me 15ish minutes to get to that point from the bottom. But if I take it slow and take breaks 20, 22 minutes. I absolutely cannot go if the sun is blazing on the mountain. It gets way too hot, so I go when it's overcast, or very early in the morning. I'm talking 5:30, 6am. read more

You can stay on the paved road and go about 2 miles up or you can choose from one of the multiple off trail options. Biggest bonus is the many options for parking. Be warned that if you come close to sunset, the cops will come and start kicking you out. If you plan on staying later, be sure to park outside of the gate on Sayre. read more

For all my hikers out there this is a must. You looking for a nice challenging hike go here head up towards the pavement road from the parking lot and humor will come to the dirt uphill. Start hiking. Get to the top where you see the pavement road again. Most people stop here but you won't keep going up this is only about 1/4 of the way to the top. Parking is great. I come here all the time. It's a beautiful park and it has a few hiking trails that you can go to. I used to bike here but now I just hike and enjoy the view. I must say just be careful coming down. I think this is the place where I started having knee and back pain. I used to jog coming down from the trail (there is a bench on top of this trail that has a beautiful overlooking sight of the valley) and I think I busted my knee and hip because the trail is uneven so I had to compensate with my weight coming down. Just be careful when you do the same (I guess when you're young and not arthritic like me you'll be fine, lol!). read more

I been coming here for a few months now and this trail is awesome. Big park there as well. But the hikes can be killer. They're really fun, though. Not your usual hike where your just walking and you go up little hills. These are some steep hills and your legs and ass will definitely feel the burn. Once you get to a certain point you can take the fire trail down. Or continue ascending to more trails. Also great place for cyclist or riding your bike up the fire trail. I see people look like they are dying going up. You can get used to it, though. I use to take 40 minutes to get to the first stop of the fire trail. Now I pretty much run it. Still hurts like a bitch, but my stamina has increased and been burning fat like crazy. I'm too good now that the homies don't even want to come with me lol. I be feeling like Rocky Balboa going up the trail with my music lol. If y'all see some sexy dude at the top jumping up and down or dancing it's probably me :) read more

Veterans Park is a great park to chill and have a picnic. Also they have a hiking trail which makes a killer workout! Every time i go on the hike, i die a little. They have a dirt and a flat path trail. The dirt trail is killer. Make sure you bring water and a cap if you go during the day. The sun is hot and there is no shade on this trail. People tell me that it "can't be that bad?" Really? Then they try and it say "oh you're right." If you want a good workout for your calves then this is it. There's plenty of parking inside the park. Also the cops come around 7pm (summer nights) to kick y'all out since they close at sunset. Also please don't dump trash all over the floor AND PICK UP YOUR DOG'S POOP. Either wait till you find a trash can or take it with you so you can dump it. It's upsetting to see trash and dog poop all over the trail or just simply walking back to your car. read more
