My son is a scooter rider and Woodward West was like hitting the jackpot for him. We had heard so much about this place and were excited to finally get him there. From a non-scooter parent point of view the facilities were great. Clean, kept up and much bigger in person that what you see online. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Customer service is vital for a good review and they had it. They offer accommodations for overnight stays but we opted for a local Airbnb for our family's needs. From a scooter (or skate) point of view Woodward really is one of the best. There are so many parks within the complex for every level of ability. You can see from my pictures the variety they offer both indoor and outdoor. If you have a rider/skater in your family, it's a must go on your list of places to visit. Talk about massive disappointment. My scooter-loving son had been begging to attend for a few years. Finally sent him for a week-long summer camp. Dropped him off with the highest of excitement and he is very outgoing so making friends is never an issue. At drop-off the facility was just as amazing as the website shows. It's now 48 hours later and he is utterly miserable. There is almost no supervision and the kids have become their own Lord of the Flies. The volume of bad kids running the facility makes it a terrible environment. The counselors leave for the day - aren't around all day. My son had so much more fun at the local skate parks because at least parents were present enough to police the park. In order to eat your kid will have to fight their way up in line because the kitchen closes and you get left out. Mine hasn't eaten all day today and has to rely on the snack bar/machine (whatever it is). Also, nobody picks up the phone around there. Have to use the bathroom? It's apparently gross and the bullying kids haze any kid who has to go. It is with great sorrow that I am typing this review. I wanted this to be a regular thing for my son for the next few years. If his circumstances change I will modify this review. So disappointed. read more

My son was really excited to attend this. He said that the camp counselors were all assholes, except for a few. Ended up getting all his clothes stolen at the end of the trip. One shirt in particlar was his dads shirt he gave him right before he passed away, so it was really special to him. It was a one of a kind shirt no one else had. My son ended up seeing one of the counselors posting a picture wearing it on his instagram account. I have been trying to email and call the place to see what they can do but they completely ignore me. If you are planning on bringing your child here just don't pack things you don't want to get stolen. Getaway weekend could be priced better since we are placed in a dilapidated building. The Lodge itself is very disappointing. First of all, it's literally falling apart. The lobby we enjoyed 3 years ago is no longer open. The pool is closed. It's an April weekend of spring break with sunshine and would be nice to at least go in the hot tub. But everything is locked. The place is ghostly vacant. What a shame to see how run down it is. I spoke with some people from the neighborhoods in town (when at P Dub's) who gave me a vision of the extraordinary and happening place it once was "before Woodward bought it." Sitting on the beautiful hilltop in Stallion Springs with amazing views all around, I can see the potential it has. I wonder if the owner has ever been up here or if he even cares that where his guests are staying is "a shambles." The skateboarding is actually incredible and awesome! My son attended Woodward for the first time this summer and it didn't disappoint. He made friends and enjoyed the time he was able to free skate and hand out with new friends. His only complaint was the food and the beds. Other than that he enjoyed his week at Woodward, he did wish the pro skaters interacted with them all more and not just the skaters who were at a higher level. read more

I sent my seven-year-old to camp which I don't suggest anybody sending their children to this camp if they are younger the supervision just is not there my son was a victim of bullying and he was not given his medication all week even though it was on the physical form... my friend just sent her seven-year-old child as well they do not remind them of their activities the little kids have no clue what's going on there's nobody to supervise them and make sure they know where they're going... they go to bed a whole hour earlier than the older kids so they have to watch them Skate while they're in their cabin . Woodward west is definitely the sports camp to go to for children ages 7 and up. Walking into the camp I was blown away. It's nothing like any summer camps I went to as a kid. It's like being transported back in time to an old western town, except with kids on skateboards everywhere. There was an outdoor grill, skateboard and bike riding stuff everywhere, a pool, a store, a cafeteria and many bunk houses. Check out my photos to get an idea. This was our daughters first year (7yrs old) and she said she had a blast! She went with her gymnastics gym, Acrobrats. We dropped her off for week 6 for gymnastics on Sunday and picked her up the following Saturday. She couldn't stop talking about how much fun she had for the entire 2 hour ride home. I recommend putting plenty of money on their account so they can partake in the stores. They can buy juices, cotton candy, Dippin Dots ice cream and more! We were able to go to the store and take a tour with our daughter when we picked her up. You can buy reusable water bottles, jackets, shirts and even leotards and skateboards! The only thing that I wish was different was the social media aspect of the place. It has a high focus on skateboarding and bmx and little to nothing with regards to gymnastics. As a parent dropping off their kids for the first time it would've been nice to see what they were up to the whole week. The kids spent about 7 hours a day in the gym and my daughter said it kicked her butt but she came back able to do way more than before we dropped her off. What cool is the camp has special guests through out the summer. This week for her was UCLA gymnasts Katelyn Ohashi. Our daughter was very excited to meet her. We were here for a scooter competition. One thing to remember is that parents/guardians need to sign a release form ahead of time and have a notary public verify the identity and stamp it. It's too easy to travel hundreds of miles only to realize that your rider cannot ride because his parents are at home. We knew about this ahead of time, as he'd already been to Woodward Tahoe but it's a lesson that too many have learned the hard way. In any case, as we wound our way up to the facility, taking in some awesome scenery, we found a small-ish parking lot that didn't seem big enough for a competition. Apparently, everyone fit. Registration was held about 50 feet from the building entrance, just off Stallion Springs Road. Richie Velasquez was extremely helpful over the phone and in person. They also had a couple of scooter vendors set up, just in case you needed some parts, and of course, there is a company store further back, near the restrooms. Yes, they only have one set of restrooms. Like the parking lot, they could be inadequate. As I was helping with photography, I paid for the $35 admission as a trade. This gave me full access to parts of the indoor skate park, which was extremely useful. The event was organized well and there really wasn't much nonsense from the riders or the parents or team managers. The indoor skate park was well-maintained and enjoyable to everyone riding, which was quite obvious. Hopefully, we'll be back for other events. read more

COVID WARNING #2 This camp is great fun for the kids, but they have pretty much ignored Covid. If you want your kid to have a Covid-free experience, this is not the place. They don't test before camp, there are no recommendations or requirements for vaccination among the staff or kids 12 and over, and there are no masks. They also have not reduced bunk size to allow for more spacing. You'd never even know Covid existed at Woodward. If you're okay with that, send your kid, but if not, you might want to reconsider, especially if your child is not vaccinated. One the kids in my child's (very full) dorm tested positive for Covid, and they sent all of the unvaccinated kids home mid-week. It was a huge disappointment for these kids, not to mention a big financial loss for the parents who assumed their kids were going to be there the whole time. read more

My kid has been begging to go to Woodward since he was 6. He's 9 now and I finally agreed to let him go this year. I was still really nervous about letting him go, he's my only, so I signed up to work the week as a driver as well. It was an incredible experience for him. He grew tremendously and learned a ton of new skills. We signed him up for intro to action sports, though he probably would have preferred just scooter, but we wanted him to get the experience of other sports. The staff there was great. I saw firsthand how much they cared for the safety and development of the kids. They went out of their way to hype kids up when they were nailing their skills and console them when they failed or needed extra support. Any injuries were addressed immediately by the trainers and staff. There's a few areas for improvement - the food that's included with your camp tuition was not great. The food the kids can pay for was better, but there are a lot of treats available. My kid lived on lucky charms, icees and milkshakes for the week. There's also a lot of activities and opportunities in the afternoons that the kids have to choose on their own to participate in. There's no one telling them to be at tie die, or check out go pro school, or the join the competitions and games. They have to read the schedule and decide on their own, which can be an awesome opportunity for growth and independence or a recipe for your kid to spend every afternoon in their cabin on their tablet if you let them bring electronics. If you have any question at all about their ability to keep themselves on task and on schedule, don't let them bring electronics! If they need to call you, the office is always there. If they want to take pics, they can check out a go pro. Parents - if you sign up to work as a mini-cabin parent or a driver.. the beds are horrible, bring a nice mattress topper. Bring a chair, there's no place to sit unless you want to be in the coffee shop or boomtown or some other space with kids around 24/7. There's no coffee until 7:30am. If you need it to wake up like me, bring a Keurig. There's 2 decent restaurants (Papas and P-Dubs) in town you can grab lunch or dinner at if you get sick of camp food. Overall, this was the highlight of my son's year. He can't wait to go back, and I would not hesitate to send him back next year. read more

My son has gone to Skate camp the last 2 years and LOVED it!! He can't wait to go back. The facility is top notch. My husband wanted to stay and go to camp with him (especially since he skates). My son came home with a bunch of new tricks, wonderful friendships, and exhausted. Worth every penny. He was 9 the first year he attended. I was worried he was a little young and tried to volunteer to be camp mom, but they didn't have an open spot. My son almost didn't want to go since I wasn't able to be there with him. But when he came home, he said he didn't have time to miss us. He was having too much FUN!! I gave him a $100 to spend in his account. He mostly bought pizza and ice cream. Woodward West - 1st day at Woodward 2014 - Summer Camps Near Me - Tehachapi, California

The food is awful, so send snacks and make sure there is protean for 3 meals. The burgers were under cooked cold & raw in the center and the food was tasteless. This from a 14 yr old who isn't picky, and 4 friends who have addended Woodward West the last 2 years. Camp Supervisors are under paid and don't care. My Grandson felt he needed some protean and asked for taquitos, the man said he didn't feel like cooking and said no. My Grandson became ill with a sinus type discharge, the dorm supervisor gave him Tylenol and Dayquil without checking in with a parent. The next day Emily, apparently a leader called for guidance on which over the count drug were acceptable. This call was appropriate and helped the child with difficulty sleeping However my Grandson 14 and an experienced skater had a wonderful time, unsupervised but a great time. This was his first year and he traveled with 5 friends who have addended Woodward West several times. We will Try Park City, Tahoe and Pa to see if they are run better and with at least " School Cafeteria food". read more

Our gym Hyht had a blast yesterday! Girls will be talking about it for days. This place it's big and great to work out and learn new skills.

Had the chance to visit this place on Saturday. We had gone to a birthday party and I lucked out and got a tour also. The camp is a extreme athletes dream come true. Any and all sizes and kinds of ramps are available to ride on your choice of wheels. They have indoor stuff as well as a lot of outdoor hits. The concrete sections are massive but have things for all ages and skill level. You will also find plenty of wood outside and even some of the best looking dirt tracks and ramps you can find anywhere. Oh I should also mention that they have a mega ramp. It is crazy big and has 3 different drop in heights available. The quarter pipe at the end of the landing is 27 feet tall just to give you some perspective of size. Not to be out done. They have gymnastics in a huge way also. Again the set up is top of the line and can take athletes from any level of skill. The bowling alley and movie theater was also very cool. I can't help but think this would be a great place for grown ups to have a party as well. We had a great time and everyone was very friendly. Cant wait to go back soon. COVID WARNING Just picked our 12-year-old up from the camp. On July 6th, one of the girls in her cabin reported flu-like symptoms and the camp medical staff disregarded the child's concerns. It took her fellow campers to call their parents to make them aware of the issue. The parent picked up the child and took her home. The child tested positive for covid on Friday and Woodward West was notified. Woodward failed to notify the other parents of children in that cabin until the next day. We have yet to see any information from Woodward West at least warning parents of a potential exposure of covid to their children at the camp or for future campers coming on the site. The absolute failure of Woodward West to put the children's safety above their own profits is appalling. One other camper in the Cabin has also cone down with Covid with a third and fourth showing symptoms according g to parents. read more

My 10 year-old son just attended Winter Skateboard Camp. Prospective parents/campers, be warned...this is a completely unstructured camp. The daily schedule has 7 items listed, including: wake-up, breakfast, lunch, dinner, free skate...and that leaves 1 more item: instruction. The first 5 items are completely unsupervised and unstructured. The instruction (2 hours of the day) is about 15 kids with 1 counselor, who is there to 'help if they need it'. Even though kids are grouped by skill level, there is no formalized instruction. The counselors are more concern with practicing their own tricks, than teaching kids anything. My son loved the camp and made some good friends; however, as a parent, I believe children under 12 should have some structure and supervision...and that's why I'm giving 3 stars. read more

Both of my kids are gymnasts. This was their 1st sleep away camp ever, so I was a little nervous. Typical For my luck, I got a call that my son hurt himself a little bit the 1st day. It was minor, but the trainers were on top of it and kept me informed. The facilities are top notch, and the people here are really great. I would definitely send my kids here again. I decided to visit on the last day-to see what everybody was doing. My son had made a lot of friends, and was having a great time. My daughter had made a couple of friends, that she really enjoys spending time with. I got to hear a motivational speech from a former Olympic athlete. All in all, it was definitely a great experience for their 1st time at camp. read more

We great experiences for the last two years! Woodward provides a summer camp where kids can growth athletically and as people. My two sons have attended summer camp for the last two years. Our experience has been very positive with my kids growing in confidence and learning new skills. My two daughters attended a week at Woodward gymnastics camp 2 years ago at a cost of over $1,600. They attended with 7 girls from their gymnastics teams. Several of the girls came home no longer wanting to be in the sport and within 2 years all of them had left gymnastics (This is a MUCH higher average than girls on their team who did NOT attend Woodward). One of our girls fractured her arm at the camp, but the camp did not recognize it was fractured, continued to have her work out without treatment, and sent her home with a broken arm which eventually led to her having to leave the sport. My younger daughter went to camp with a round-off triple flip-flop and came back with a phobia of going backwards. It got so bad that a year later she had to leave her team My daughters thought the actual quality of coaching was good, and my older daughter did learn her giant on strap bar. The girls did 3 hours of gym before lunch and 3 hours after dinner. The rest of the day was UNSUPERVISED free time. Their counselor was only with them at meals and overnight. Their counselor was not a gymnast; she was a skateboarder. My daughters have been to 7 different summer camps and are not picky eaters; they say Woodward has the worst meals of any of them. We sent them with $100 spending money each (they were supposed to buy some Woodward leotards and t-shirts), but they spent about $120 on junk food. Be sure your daughter brings her grips as the Woodward store sells the worst grips ever. Overall, if you need your kids at a sleep-away camp for daycare, then send them. But if your family is serious about a sport, stay away from Woodward. read more

Refund Policy... BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Last year I made a reservation for my son in February paid 300.00 deposit, for a camp in July... A week after I made the reservation realized he could not attend, so I called up to cancel and they would not refund me my 300.00. They said that they spent a lot of money in preparation for his stay already and it was company policy they would NOT refund me anything... Awesome, awesome facilities for all extreme sports. We come here twice a year for intensive gymnastics training. The cabins are nice with great heating options, in fact most of the time we have to turn down the heater because t gets so warm. The gymn is amazing and has monitors available that replays the gymnasts moves for learning opportunities. If your coming for camp and you're vegetarian, let the cook know and he'll make vege food for you. The employees are awesome, and quite helpful. Depending on the season you go, it may snow so you have to come prepared with proper attire. My son is a skateboarder. He went 2013 at age 10 and had a blast. Learned a lot. Came back this summer for week 7 and is back for week 8. He took 5 friends. Lots to do. Skate, bike or scooter and you need this experience. Lots of motivated instructors who encourage, not discourage. Like school or any other camp the kids will bitch about the food. I've seen the menu and it looks good. Bring money for snacks. Energy drinks are for the older kids . Cabins are used hard but are cool and sufficient. What a fun experience for your kids. I got to say this camp really rocks it's well run, full of friendly staff, and lots of kids were jumping with excitement. Look nothing's perfect and I wish the communication was just a little bit better but overall it's a pretty good value and I think my son really enjoyed the experience. He had no complaints and any issues inside the cabins were quickly handled. The food was pretty good and there are also plenty of healthy options. My son has gone to camp here the past few years. I can't even begin to explain how much he loves it. I just picked him up last week and he still is talking about how much fun he had. He goes the same week every year and is reunited with a group of kids that all go the same week. The camp is amazing. It is huge and very well organized. I have always felt 100% comfortable leaving him. There are tons of things to do. It is 10 times more incredible than any summer camp that I went to growing up. The town it is located in is adorable. The camp was fine. Counselors were nice. Food was mediocre, activity facilities excellent, structure fine. This camp is geared towards kids that have skills or are really ready to put themselves out there. My son spent quite a bit of time back in the cabin watching movies on his kindle when it was "free" time (which there was a lot of). This works well for some kids. Mine could have used a little more attention and coaxing. No hard feelings, just no "wow" factor. Other camps that he has attended had tons of activities and the counselors were trained to watch out for kids that needed a little extra attention. My son just returned from a week at Woodard and he LOVED it. He cannot wait to go back next year and I am more then happy to send him. I do have a couple of small complaints though. Drop off/Camper Check-in is easy enough. But there is NO direction as to where to pick your child up at the end of the week. I was a little irritated not knowing where to go considering drop off and pick up are in two totally different locations. I just had to follow other parents and hope for the best. Considering the cost of camp I was a little disappointed by the lunch/dinner selection and the cost of snacks. My son said breakfast was great, there was always fresh fruit, but lunch and dinner in his words was "garbage". And I really cant wrap my mind around the fact that a bag of Sour Patch Kids was $4.00, Overall he had a wonderful experience, made tons of new friends, liked his counselor and is excited to go back. My son went to this camp last year. He was in the BMX group and absolutely loved it He learned a lot and really had the time of his life. He raved about his cabin counselor Anthony and would love to have him this year too. This is the first away camp my son has went to and I was a little worried because it is 5 hours from our home and it is expensive. I have to say I was very impressed with the facilities and the staff. It was well worth the money and I would highly recommend this camp. My son can't wait to come back this year. read more

This camp looks great on paper. However unlike most family ran camps where the owners are sympathetic towards their campers needs and care most about whether the campers have a good time, Darlene Olsen, the office manager and sole decision maker appears to be more concerned with making money than anything else. Building reputation and good will are obviously of no concern to her. We registered our daughter in April for camp over the summer. Shortly after registering our daughter broke her arm which required a three hour surgery and up to 6 months of rehab rendering her unable to participate in camp. We immediately contacted the camp to let them know on April 22, still within the same month that their cancellation policy expires (expired April 1). We have a letter from her surgeon telling us she can not perform gymnastics until after rehab. We were shocked to find that Darlene still would not refund our registration deposit in full stating that they had to order food and staff the camp already in ways that could not be changed (4 months in advance). This is complete corporate red tape and their is no way they could not adjust their needs accordingly without cost. In talking to her she stuck by her corporate guns before eventually cutting me off saying I was not being reasonable to request an exception to their stated policy. To anyone considering this camp for gymnastics I would do a round off back hand spring in the opposite direction and save your money for those that really care about you and your kids.
